US born jockey leading the money earned title?

You go girl

She is already atop the Fair Grounds leader board for the just started meet with a 36% win rate … 28 mounts thus far going 10-5-4 … that’s 68% in the money.

From NOLA

Napravnik, fresh off a win in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita, moved her tack to the Fair Grounds Nov. 17 after taking a long-awaited honeymoon (she got married last year).

ā€œIt’s just great to be back and I’ve had such a great day,ā€ she said at the end of the day. ā€œI’m just glad to be home. This is probably my favorite racetrack.ā€

She has an amazing ability to find the winner’s circle.

Current (as of 12/27/12) with Rosie at the top of the Fair Grounds:

119 starts 29-20-19 $993,695 mount earnings
Win percentages 24% (1st) and a whopping 68% (top 3/win/place/show)

And she sets a new record for 2012!

Brisnet 1-1-13: ā€œNapravnik tops Krone to establish new female jockey markā€

Jockey Rosie Napravnik closed out a career-best season on December 31, securing the highest spot ever for a female jockey on the North American leader board in 2012.

Finishing the year with $12,451,713 in purse earnings, with 193 wins, 191 seconds and 167 thirds from 1,200 starts, Napravnik finished eighth nationally among jockeys in the year-end standings. Hall of Fame jockey Julie Krone set the record in 1988 when she finished the year with a ninth-place finish. She finished ninth again in 1992 and the record stood for the past 20 years.

From Julie Krone

ā€œIt is pretty obvious that Rosie lays down the numbers,ā€ Krone said. "What fun it has been to watch her year unfold. She is in new territory – being one of the top 10 jockeys in the U.S.A. My heart gets to racing at the thought of her winning the (Kentucky) Derby. I live vicariously through many of her racing moments, then the others, I just enjoy.

ā€œHer tactical savvy in a race is as good as they come. Her gift of the feel or touch for the Thoroughbred is remarkable. As a rider one of the best compliments I got in the 1980s was a valet that said, ā€˜you look like a man on a horse.’ This has been said of Rosie many times as well. Her talents are only second to her determination. I suspect this won’t be her last visit to the top 10 list. She has all the qualities of a champion.ā€

Woo!!! She seems like a very focused rider. I’m impressed by her riding, she is up there with the best of the best male jockeys. Looking forward to the day she is #1.

And on Jan 23, 2013 Rosie was given the Key to the City of New Orleans by the Mayor (picture included)

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu presented jockey Rosie Napravnik with a ā€œKey to the Cityā€ in a ceremony held late Wednesday afternoon in the Mayor’s office at City Hall. Mayor Landrieu, on behalf of the city, also presented Napravnik with a proclamation officially recognizing her achievements.

Napravnik is originally a native of New Jersey but has called New Orleans ā€œthe closest thingā€ she has to a home since purchasing a house with husband Joe Sharp, also pictured, in Mid-City in 2011. She currently leads the Fair Grounds jockey standings with 46 wins entering Thursday’s races.

Said US-born jockey getting her coverage in … gasp … a foreign newspaper

UK’s The Guardian Jan 25, 2012: "ā€˜I had a dream of winning the Derby on Shanghai Bobby’ - excerpt

[Napravnik’s home in] mid-city New Orleans house contains only a few items that betray her profession, and indeed the person.

One is a portrait of Ruffian, America’s ill-fated champion filly whose desire to win surpassed even the pain from catastrophic injury. The other, a picture entitled The Savage, is a black and white snapshot of the 1980 Tremont Stakes at Belmont Park in which, amid the fervor of a sustained stretch battle, Great Prospector reached over, neck sinews strained to snapping, to maul Golden Derby, the eventual winner.

ā€œPeople think I’m stuck up and unhappy,ā€ she says. ā€œBut it’s not that I’m unhappy or not content. It really isn’t. I had an agent at Delaware [Park racecourse] say: ā€˜You could lose by a nose or win by 10 lengths and you look exactly the same walking back to the jocks room, showing no emotion at all.’ It’s hard to explain what I’m so focused about.ā€

Th article is quite lengthy (which is good!) and really gives folsk who haven’t followed her a much better idea of the highs and lows she’s suffered to get where she is. Injuries, learning experience, sacrifice.

I find her unassuming. I was standing next to her at the fall Keeneland meet when she happened to be on the ā€˜public’ side of the saddling enclosure after a race where she was off the board and talking to some folks she knew. For all the success and exposure (more than many of male peers get with) she wasn’t acting anything - if I wanted her autograph or photo it would’ve been fine. (Although respective of her conversing and not quite the time to interrupt. I didn’t ask for those reasons.)

I think she’s good stuff, good for the game, focused and determined to succeed in racing. And perhaps more importantly not using the sport as a stepping stone to model, act, or become a trophy wife.

Despite the narrow loss aboard Shanghai Bobby in the $400k Holy Bull at Gulfstream in the afternoon of Saturday she clearly boarded a jet to get to Sam Houston later that night … and worth the effort as she set a track record. [video in link]

Joyful Victory [with Rosie up] turned the tables on frequent rival Brushed by a Star, when she won the inaugural $400,000 Houston Ladies Classic over that one Saturday night at Sam Houston Race Park, and in the process set a track record.

The win was one of two stakes scores on the card for the trainer-jockey team of Larry Jones and Rosie Napravnik, who also took the $75,000 Champion Energy Services in course record time with Ikon Ike.

Rosie is good stuff Glitter, we gave her one of her first mounts here in Md. The first time her agent brought her to our barn I was super impressed by her maturity and the way she handled herself. We went out to the track together and worked horses and I just knew she had the talent to go far. So happy for her!

This is what I like about her, she is here for the race, not her ego.

And she even rides cross country over obstacles - up the bank she goes:

And a tweet from Rosie (Thur Feb 7th) in regards to the photo circulating around.

Q: Did Rosie ever ride in a steeplechase for Jazz?

By the way as of the end of day 2/7/13 Rosie is currently 3rd in the US in the jock standings nationally with earnings @ $1,329,650. Frankly had she not been taken off Kauai Katie (for her 2013 season) she’d be just $8k shy of 1st place. Katie would’ve added $180k on that tally.

Do you know why she was taken off KK? Out by 8k is not much, I’m hoping she hits the 1st slot again. I wonder if there is any chance she could get a ride on a Derby mount.

Yesterday (Sat, Feb 9th) was Rosie’s 25th birthday although while she continued her a-typical winning day (2 wins) her national jock standing (by earnings) dropped from 3rd to 5th with some bigger pursed races shifting to others.

As for why she was taken off KK (just my 1,000 mile view) but the 4th place finish in the Grade 1 Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies last fall did it. Kauai Katie otherwise is 5-0 in her career. I doubt it was a Pletcher decision but more so Stonestreet Stables making that call.

Well she has the mount on Shanghai Bobby who is on most people’s top 10 list for the Derby already and he’s tied for 1st place with Derby eligible points. I’m not sure if 1 1/4 mi is his distance so she could jump to another mount.

With an injured Ramon out of the picture for this year’s Derby that opens the door for any talented rider. Also D. Wayne Lukas has a couple of horses in the top 10 with earned Derby points but each having Jon Court as their jockey. If they both make it to the Kentucky Derby that means Lukas would need another jockey.

In case folks though she might ride Tom Amoss trained Mylute (whom she has rode a significant number of horses at Fairgrounds) that is nixed with a run at Oaklawn Park. Grade 2 Risen Star Stakes - on Feb. 23

Rosie Napravnik, who rode [Mylute] to his latest victory, won’t be on his back that day, however. Amoss said Napravnik will ride a yet-unnamed Todd Pletcher 3-year-old in the race, so he’ll make a jockey change.

ā€œWe’ll probably look for someone local,ā€ Amoss said.

As folks likely saw Rosie took a distant 2nd in the Risen Star aboard Fear the Kitten who now has 6-Derby points.

From her twitter account comes this picture back in April 1997

That’s Rosie aboard ā€œSweet Sensationā€ winning the Brandywine Point to Point in what I assume is the pony race.

Vet cute picture, the other pony looks like it could do with a smaller rider.

I totally spaced about SB, I haven’t followed him so have no idea regarding his distance abilities.

She’s back in 3rd place, nationally, in the jock standings as of 2-24-13 after a killer Saturday at the Fair Grounds. Won the Mineshaft Handicap (Grade 3) and Rachel Alexandra Stakes (Grade 3) and took 3rd in both the Fair Grounds Handicap (Grade 3) and Risen Star Stakes (Grade 2) … that adds some good bank to her record
