Used Trailer Shopping 101 for a New Hauler

I happily hauled a friends horse along when I got my first trailer and we went trail riding. Before I got my own trailer I was hauled to shows by other kind folks but it was people I had a good relationship with.

They knew I had a need and offered.

Just because you have a trailer some who don’t will ask for a lift. I would never haul for someone I didn’t know well and especially for a horse that I had no way of knowing how they take to being trailered.

I only haul my very good friend’s horse or mine. I once attempted to haul a friend’s mule when we were going on a weekend ride and the mule started kicking the shit out of my horse as soon as they were loaded. My horse came flying out of the trailer and she had to take her nice walker mare instead of the mule. Took me a while to load my horse back in after that debacle.

Ugh, that doesn’t sound like a pleasant experience.

I will haul friends if I know the horse and we’re going to same place. Sometimes it’s nice to only deal with parking one trailer.

I will say I’ve gotten much more selective about offering over the years. Now I will only do it for someone I know well and a horse I know will haul well. A few not so great experiences really put me off.

I think you’re right to be cautious. You may have situations in the future where you are comfortable hauling and it makes sense to minimize trailers. Saying no now (or forever) is likely a good decision.

Welcome to trailer ownership! It’s one of the most useful ways to learn how to say NO and not bother to explain yourself.

Apparently owning ANYthing LOL.

I heard one of the boarders asking about my cart to the BO saying his one horse has a harness. BO told him he should buy a cart too  Curious to see if he approaches me about it or not after that and prepared if he does!

The trailer asking culprit has now taken to the barns Facebook group begging for a trailer again. Non emergency of course. I did learn this person managed to do some damage to another persons trailer and didn’t fix everything. Also didn’t even hitch it up safely :woman_facepalming:t2:

It is very good saying no practice!!

I’ve been seeing on FB people asking if they can “borrow” someone’s truck and trailer to haul a horse to a show, or in one case haul down to California from Washington :open_mouth: Who in their right mind would loan a stranger their truck and trailer? In one case, the asker said not to mention trailer renting because it was too expensive. Not as expensive as the cost to replace both if you get into a wreck.

I guess I’m surprised and not surprised. That’s the thing people don’t seem to think about is what if something gets damaged, can they afford to replace it and are they willing to replace it? Or even if an accident happened that was caused by someone else and say it’s all covered by insurance; still a huge PITA and not worth the risk in my opinion. I’d rather say no up front than have to be in the position to deal with fallout for someone potentially not wanting to take responsibility for something they should.

The guy asking about my cart I know couldn’t afford to deal with any damage if I were to let him use the cart and something happened. He of course has less experience driving than I do (which isn’t much!) and doesn’t know much about horses. The horse with the harness also has terrible ground manners. Naturally!

I’m staycationing for a bit and the trailer is getting a glow up! I took it to the wash and got all the yuck off, and cleaned the rust off the wheels and repainted. I was so sore last night!

Do people power wash the insides too? I’d like to do that as well but wasn’t prepared to get that soaked.

Wow! That looks great!

And yes, the inside gets pressure washed too. Also, I’d sterilize if you don’t know exactly what horses have been in there. I just get a scrub brush on a stick and use a Mr Clean type solution. Pick a hot day and get ready to get wet.

If you pressure wash the inside make sure to pull the mats and let everything dry before reinstalling.

Looks good, and yes, I fully clean the inside once a year, and pull the mats out 2x year
