USEF Medal Final 2022

Sadly, it states in the rule book that they don’t have to be sound for equitation.

EQ102 Judging

  1. SOUNDNESS. Unsoundness does not penalize a competitor unless it is sufficiently severe to impair the required performance. In such cases, the imposition of a penalty is at the judge’s discretion. (Exception: Hunter/Jumper Seat Equitation classes held at Hunter Jumper Competitions where, in a case of unsoundness sufficiently severe to impair the required performance, the judge(s) must eliminate the competitor from that class and inform the competition manager, who in conjunction with the Official Veterinarian and the Steward, will evaluate disqualifying the horse from further participation in the competition.)

Bolding mine. I guess this is where “serviceably sound” comes from, although I tend to keep that label for lesson horses and novice children’s/adult horses…

Maddie Tosh’s horse looks quite young - not sure if the commentators are saying anything about it as I had to mute the stream.

They did—apparently it wins in the Hunter ring a lot.

Some miscommunications between Samantha Takacs and her horse.

Next break after 180?

A few little ticks but overall a beautiful ride from Caroline Signorino. She came in with a strong pace and a purpose, and the course flowed well for her.

Beautiful, smooth ride from Olivia Sweetnam. Her pace and rhythm never changed through that entire round, and the jumps showed up well.

Nice ride from Avery Glynn! Shame about the rail, just rolled right out

That continues to be the most frequent comment with my instructors. My pinkie is always loose.

Grace Rabb got quite deep and sticky to fence 4, but otherwise a nice round. I really like her horse - cute expression and a great canter.

He was turned out beautifully, I just wish someone had fixed that pad before she came into the ring.

Ok the wheels fell off a little, but Ella Delgado’s horse is ADORABLE and wants to come live with me.

This poor girl is getting dragged around by this horse. I’m sure he’s a lovely beast, but she’s tiny.

I LOVE the floppy ears that bounce in time with his canter stride.

Avery Glynn had him before her.

I remember reading (probably in the Chronicle) some words by Karen Healey about judging EQ. She had a few definite pet peeves that would knock a rider out of contention immediately, and I can’t for the life of me remember what they were.

Once again the quality of the EQ horses is impressive.

Does the rule book still contain the phrase “serviceably sound” as a requirement for EQ horses?

I don’t know if this was said already, but I’m so happy to see the jackets back to a normal length in the equitation. No more covering the saddle

Yes. Funny enough, someone actually posted the rule somewhere above!

Thanks. I fell asleep and thus haven’t kept up with the thread. :+1:
