Villa Louis Carriage Show Sept 2019

My husband and I want to take a extended road trip with our new car, Tesla Model 3!!! Have friends to visit in Michigan, north LP and of course, as we are close, Mackinac Island!!! So, I suggested Villa Louis. Live about 4 hours from Walnut Hill, which unfortunately, is no longer. Showed there twice with my horse. Not looking to show, horse and I are retired from showing, 6 years now, so just to spectate. Looks like there is a state park close, as we will probably camp. Any info/advise would be very appreciated.

Thanks in advance. Hopefully, spring will be here one day!!!

Oh nice! Congrats on the new car. Super fancy!!

I’ve never been to Villa Louis so I can’t help out there. Its a bit too far of a drive for us, but it really looks like a nice show and I’ve only heard good things about it.

Very sad of course about Walnut Hill, it also was fairly close to us. Orleton Farm has taken Walnut Hill dates and they have added a coaching division this year as well. We have been going to Orleton Farm Pleasure Show for years and its a great show! Not sure if you can make the drive to MA, but I highly reccomend it. We will be there for sure! We have our new pair going and Mary is showing a 4 in hand of our Morton bred ponies. Can’t wait to see them go!

Fingers crossed for spring like weather. Its almost here…I can feel it in the air

I’ve been to VLCC 3X - once spectating only, once helping a friend & I showed my mini there in 2017 - our ADS debut

Hoping to take him there again this year with Carriage Club friends - the 5h drive is a bit much for me solo.
It is lovely place to show & see gorgeous carriages & horses from all over the US.
One lady brings her team of Friesians - she comes from from TX, horses come from KY.
Lots of fun vendors too.

The grounds are lovely & do not skip the tour of the mansion.
There’s also a Picnic Class & a Carriage Dog class.
Competitors are a really lovely group of like-minded folks.
No snobbery & very welcoming to Newbs like me & mini.

There is camping on the grounds, but that might be limited to competitors.

You might consider using the car ferry that runs across Lake Michigan. Ludington to Milwaukee I believe. Not cheap but saves a lot of driving hours.

Sounds like a fun time with all those high points on your route.

Thanks everyone for your advice. DJ - I am also in Ontario, so MA would maybe another year and a horsey destination!!! We have had the car since last May, so really not new, new, but my husband loves it.
2DogsFarm - if our plans do come together to go, I will PM and try and meet you at the show. Always more fun at a show if you actually know someone showing!!!
Goodhors - Yes, I have thought about the ferry. We took it years ago to go to the EAA show at Oshkosh, saves driving north around or thru Chicago!!! We visited Mackinac on that trip too!!! This would be our fourth? time there.

A photo I saw this morning shows the Villa Louis venue is currently under water. Hopefully they won’t have problems in getting the grounds in shape for fall!

Seems like everything is underwater in the middle section of the country. Seems you have to live here to
hear about it.

If you are not under water, the water is soupy under the surface of the dirt. Too squishy to do trail riding or driving, it would tear up the trails very badly. A number of State Parks are closed to riding now. The farm holding the local driving day this weekend has closed the trails and dressage field because of so much water in the ground. The land is like walking on a saturated sponge, boots make splooshy noises while horses would punch right into the ground. The indoor arena is still usable, so happenings will be inside.

I can’t get any field work done, too wet. Way behind both fertilizing and mowing. But I am letting the horses out to graze, in two daily sessions. Up to 5 hours a day now. Whatever they tear up can be fixed with a bit of discing and dragging. I HAVE to get them off hay. We are about out and any for sale is priced thru the roof. An ad in the paper has organic grass and alfalfa for $8-9-10 the bale for first, second and third cuttings. Other places are slightly less expensive, but cost sure adds up fast at those prices for our bunch.

My spring flowers look real nice though! And none of ours hesitate to run thru the mud, so it is called “A training opportunity!” Ha ha They are so pretty, all strung in a line heading out to the field at a canter!

Bumping as I just got my Villa Louis entry packet.
Looks like they are assuming water issues s/b resolved before the 9/6/19 Start Date.

I am meeting with Carriage Club friends next Tuesday & starting to plot our trip to Prairie du Chien.

@cabz If plans firm up I promise to try to remember to PM you

@goodhors :smiley:
Yup, love watching my Graduated Sizes Herd of 3 cavorting in pasture.
We were just starting to dry out here…
So, of course, thunderstorms forecast for tonight :frowning:

I’m beginning to think that the sole purpose of the weather is to interrupt the fitness schedule of drivers. All fall and winter long those of us competing in FL/SC battled the never ending rain and mud (especially if we lived in GA or Aiken). Now our weather in fine except the season is over.

So apparently it’s your turn to be axle deep in mud…

Here in Ontario, about an hour northwest of Toronto, soggy ground here too. The field at my barn was a swamp the other day and it is on the top of a hill!!! Was more dried out yesterday. Tried the trails, but still too boggy, only left holes and do not want to pull shoes. Have to get the cart up to the barn to hopefully start driving in the next week or two. Lost use of the old track next door, so can only drive on the road, but my mare is very good.
@2DogsFarm Yes, please keep in the loop on your plans either here or PM. Still in planning stages, lots of Tesla Superchargers on the route. Hey, it happens at the end of summer and do not want to rush that!!! It is finally looking like it out there!!!
@goodhors Looking at the ferries, may do the high speed one, I think anything to avoid driving thru Chicago!!!

Good driving, riding or whatever you do with your horses, just enjoy them!!!

You can check State construction on roads thru the MDOT site. They keep it updated pretty well. Grand Rapids has most of I-96 torn up through the city. There might even be an App for road conditions and construction! I agree, do anything to avoid the Chicago traffic!

We are slowly drying locally, much less rain last week, farmers are able to work in the fields. That is my job next week, discing, dragging to smooth the ground and hoping to get fertilizer down too. We have clay dirt that stays wet longer than other locations. But warmer days finally have the grass doing well, horses have free time turnout now.

Not getting much driving time though and now husband is working on the new windmill hazard at Metamora. Quite the project! There was a photo on the MCDE facebook page of the framework. They got the deck on the center yesterday. Used lumber actually 2" x 4", looks massive with the big beams under it!! They hope it will be finished to use, but weather delays have really slowed working days. With April and start of May so wet, not able to drive, we won’t be competing. Horses can’t get in fit shape with the short time left to prepare. Disappointing, but weather does what it likes and so far it likes surprising us!

My trainers show at Villa every year, and have brought me along as a groom. Its a wonderful show, the grounds are gorgeous and to top it all off the Mississippi River is so close by. I totally recommend going. There are tons of hotels nearby (although the parking lots are usually flooded with large trucks and the occasional golf cart.) It’s definitely worth it to go.

@LydiaStella46 So far our plans are still Go.
I booked a room as the nearby hotels fill up FAST!
2nd trip we had to stay 45min from the grounds :disgust:
What do your trainers show?
If we make it I’ll definitely Woot for your turnout
”‹”‹”‹”‹”‹”‹BTW, you know there is a Groom to Drive class;)

@cabz I’ll PM as things firm up - keep all digits crossed.

We could have a Mini COTH IRL GTG:cool:

@2DogsFarm Great to hear. Tentative plans are to camp at the local state park, but will see closer to the time. Will be visiting a friend in Michigan, who showed there last year, but not going this year.

Looking forward to it!!!

@cabz :encouragement:

Stacey and Meredith Giere in Single Horse and Small Pony, respectively. And I am aware, however by the en of the weekend I’m so exhausted I don’t think I could properly brush horse, let alone show it.

@LydiaStella46 :wink:
Okay, I’ll look for them as I’m doing just VSE so should have time to spectate.
I hear ya on getting wore out.
I really want to do Cones this year & hope I’m not toast by the time it comes up.
Unlike the arena classes, Cones requires my brain to do more work

@LydiaStella46 I met Stacy years ago, she use to help in the ring at Walnut Hill. My friend trains with her. She did show at VL last year, but not going this year.
@2DogsFarm l loved doing cones and cross country. My mare was not the fastest, but we had fun, or at least I did, she may have not agreed!!! Will add moral support for you and Bugs!!!
We have been talking and starting abit more planning. Need to figure out charging places for our electric car over the top of Wisconsin and the UP to get to Mackinac. That’s my husband’s job!!!
