Virginia Foxhound Show

Alas, not this year

Was just ‘in state’ for my college reunion this past weekend…but they moved it up a week from its usual Memorial Day spot, in which I used to peel out early Sunday and make the show…couldn’t stretch til next Sunday!

It’s all about the food!

Well…THANK GAWD we got the dress code taken care of AND we’re fixing Lex up with a vegetable AND all them important things but we forgot the most important thing…
THE FOOD!!
Where we eating? (Hint-this is where the attendees all invite other attendees to their tailgate to eat/drink…) She/he who hits the most tailgates wins!!!
OH! And there’s that “hug a huntsman” contest and the “most footprints on their pants” contest and the “best looking in a white labcoat” contest but my personal fav = “cutest kid showing a hound” one. Oh I could go on…

Wateryglen, you asking us where the food is going to be is like having a bloodhound ask where the rabbit is going to be. Kinda redundant.

See you all there

How will i know you all? I don’t get to COTH that often so I don’t know all names vs. screen names!!

I am coming Sunday for sure and trying to find extra ticket(s) for Sat dinner. If anyone knows of any available please call or email me. They are adamant about not taking late reservations over the phone or at the door because it’s a sit-down dinner rather than hors d’oeuvres.

Appreciate the dress tips too, thanks!

Cheryl from Stonewall Hounds

I have an idea - last year we had something of a rendez vous point. How about JSwan and WGlen and LexInVa (sans the tomato) hook up and travel as a threesome (there’s a visual for ya’) and pick up riders on their coattails as they orbit the grounds? IOr - sincerely -let’s plan to hook up. I’ll be there at lunchtime. How about meet at xxx tent at xxx o’clock? Or xxx ring during xxx class?

Me, Too!

Sorry to just join the party. My internet connection on the neighbor’s shed got hit by lightening.

I am coming with Pleasantvalley and the Amwell group. I want to meet the rest of you in person! Anyone want to add our coth names to our name badges?

They don’t do name badges at the hound show!
I think a particular time at a particular ring or tent is the thing. And/or just anybody ask for Star with Warrenton, or Jessica with Casanova, or Betsy with ODH. Between us 3 we know many of the other CotH’ers and can sort of make a hook up.
But … no one wants to set up the time/place? What about by the junior handler class at noon? Not sure what ring it’s in, but its easy to find! (just follow the crowd.) On the ‘mansion side’ of the ring? (the entrance end will be mobbed.)

I think meeting at the junior handlers class (noon) is a good idea. There is not quite as much milling around aimlessly going on and we’re more likely to spot each other.

Does that work for everyone?

I gotta better idear!! See Me!!

Since I am selling programs at the registration tent all morning; come to see me!! I’ll be sitting at a table that says “Programs” and talking/selling etc. That’s a central place & person who will be in a fixed spot all morning! I’m a tall brunette who’ll likely be smiling! And hugging. and… I’ve seen most of ya’ll. I’m bad at names tho’!
We could have me put our names on pieces of tape or something…the word COTH or something. I have a WateryGlen baseball cap somewhere around here…
How’s that?!!! Weeeeeeee!

And be sure to bring me some breakfast. I read somewhere that Horse Country Saddlery had croissants & coffee at thier tent… Cream & sugar ok… and will SOMEONE please bring a tomato!

Works for me!!!

Mansion side of the ring for the junior handler class - check.

I was hoping my son was going to participate in the junior handler class, as both my children have been working with hounds twice a week (they LOVE it) for the last couple months. He chickened out during our small in-house show. I’m thinking a “slightly” larger audience might put him over the edge though.

I added photos from our show to my website home page. Yes, I’m prejudiced - but I LOVE the one pic of my son interacting with one of the young unentered bitches.

See ya’ll ring side.

While you’re around, visit the National Sporting Library!

They’re having two great events in Middleburg on hound show weekend. On Saturday, they’re having a sporting book sale. Their website says many of their used/duplicate hardbacks will be available for $5 and paperbacks will be at $2! Link to info here. Proceeds benefit the library’s book acquisition fund.

The library also is holding a new exhibit, called Lives of Dogs, which looks really good. My family and I are planning to go on Saturday. Link to more info on the exhibit here.

The National Sporting Library & Fine Art museum’s main web page is here.

I will have to miss the hound show this year, unfortunately. As we only have one hound showing, I agreed to participate in the show jumping demo of the Hunt Country Stable tour on Saturday and Sunday (this should be interesting… a hunter rider with a (admittedly brave) 5 yr old that has only been jumping 5 months ).

I hope y’all have a great time!

so little time…

Yes, so much to do ; so little time!
Every year I say to myself…THIS year I’m doing the stable tour or THIS year I’m doing the USTR trailride.
Once again I’ll be doin’ the hound show thang and still lovin’ it.
Weather lookin’ good!!!

The weather looks like it’ll be decent Sunday…and Morven’s right on my way to White’s Ferry and the barn. See ya’ll on Sunday.

I’m so jealous…I am dying to get back to VA. I broke my arm badly (NO, didn’t fall off a horse, but got stepped on one when he spooked from a stray neighbors cow!!)…then my help left…so am home getting a new girl broken in…and mending.
I’m sure hoping to come visit hunting later this fall…but Dr said it’d be 3-6 months for my arm to be back to normal…it’s “pulverized”…right arm, of course! ugh.

Lots of friends up there at the hound show…from LOH and elsewhere…ya all have fun!!!

Hats!

Yes FF, those LOH hounds are jest fab-u-luss! I’m sure they’ll win some ribbons. They are surely a pack to behold. I like the pack classes best I must confess. I just hate the sound system since I don’t know all the packs and can’t hear ‘em announced. Favorite pack to see? Reedy Creeks black & tans. Like all tri-colored packs too.
Like my american hounds best overall tho’…

Forecast is 89 degrees and frizzy hair (aka: Virginny’s finest humidity). Ladies break out your hats!!!

I like tri colors too (aka pintos)…LOH has a new nice young one!
I’m dying to hear…who won?

Results!!

Wow! Whata weekend!
Live Oak owned the day! In the final championship - they had the champions from BOTH the crossbred AND english rings against each other for the Championship!!! The LOH English Dog beat the LOH Crossbred dog for Show champion. The english ring entries were very light too. And in the american ring. It was Keswick best bitch vs Keswick best dog for that championship with the class going to the dog. And it was a gorgeous all red penn-marydel dog in the finals. And all dog final I think…ok so maybe WG was tired and maybe buzzed some at the end of the day.
Midland won the performance trials championship.
Moore County won a pack class. Essex won theirs. Don’t know who won english but only 2 packs in it.
New Deep Run huntsman John Tabatchka won the hornblowing contest. Dozen entries and hard fought contest.
In my american ring; Brazos Valley from Texas did outstanding!! After a 27 hour ride to get here- I say they deserved it too!
Best tailgate? Strictly my opinion!
Was Brenda Milne and her friends from Blue Ridge/Old Dominion/Fairfax etc.
Second had to be Reedy Creek. Most tents & tailgates EVER! Especially non local hunts too!
AND best/largest # vendors & shopping EVER.
Saturday seminar & panel of judges was not well attended but totally delightful. A question/answer session where they all answered the same questions. Lotsa hunting stories shared and of course our UK judges were funny and charming.
Saturday dinner was rowdy and very, very fun! They were able to keep up with us over at the bars!!
Famous MFH’s I got to meet?!! Oh WOW! Lynn Lloyd of Red Rock! Marvin Beeman of Arapahoe! Mitch Jacobs of West Hills! Sandy & Bobby Dixon of Brazos Valley! Oh I could go on and on…and I met Jim Meads and heard a buncha stories from him. He’s pushing almost 500 hunts he’s followed & photo’d! Showed me a remarkable photo that will be in his next book due out 2012!
Big hit of the weekend were folks getting their copys of Centennial View autographed by the folks in attendance!
Norman Fine has a new book out AND has JUST started a new Foxhunting website. Foxhuntinglife.com I think it is.
As I drink more coffee; I might remember more but this is a start. I’d check the Va. Foxhound Clubs website too.
Got to see some Cothers but got tired carrying around that tomato. Lex didn’t show…

I was there for the end of the show and left shortly thereafter as there was nothing of interest going on to keep me there.

Lex,
I really wanted to meet you! I’m bummed that you were there and I didn’t get to share some banter. Sigh…
