How about O3 Animal Health - they have a Vit E oil I’ve used with good results but don’t see it on your spreadsheet.
Just had someone in the PSSM group on FB recommend Black Horse Products Natural E and it’s less expensive than Santa Cruz. Any thoughts or feedback on this product?
It’s actually not less expensive. The Black Horse scoop only provides 1,000IU/scoop. Santa Cruz provides 4,000IU/scoop.
Black Horse is in the Vit E spreadsheet up thread. Hope that helps.
If you buy the giant bags then you get to $.14/1000IU which is close enough to $.13/1000IU that’s the 4lb of UltraCruz powder. Once you get into the smaller sizes, it moves up to $.18/1000IU
OK thank you both!
scoop size isn’t what makes it more or less $ though. Each size tells you how many servings of 1000IU you get, for what price. Each product says:
“1 level scoop (equal to 1/2 teaspoon) equals 1000 IU’s.”
it’s just really weird that they sell a “6 month supply @ 1000IU/day” then “6 month supply @ 2000IU/day” and then 3000IU 4000IU, 5000, 6000, and 8000.
Breaking it down to the 1000IU cost shows that the biggest size of the Black Horse is on par with the 4lb UltraCruz powder, and the smaller size is on par with the biggest size of the UltraCruz pellets, but BC isn’t cheaper, just close enough to basically be a wash, respectively.
I know someone with multiple masters degrees that cannot comprehend the concept of price per unit. I’m not at all surprised they sell it this way, and I’m sure it makes a lot of sense to a lot of people who get in the weeds trying to compare different dosing across different products.
You’re right! I was looking at the referenced the vit e table. The nomenclature on their website makes it sound like their concentrations per scoop are different when they’re not, you’re just feeding more scoops per day. It’s definitely an odd way to name the different size bags. But I could see a vet saying your horse needs 6,000IU per day and customer sees that naming and just buys that bag not realizing the other sizes available.
I’m just not independently wealthy enough to be able to afford $500 worth of Vit E.
I like the Santa Cruz products and can get them same day from Amazon (I buy the smaller bag vit E).
for sure! On the good side of this, the cost differences per 1000IU isn’t significant unless you’re feeding maybe 100s of horses. I see the benefit of the biggest bags, but you’re right, most don’t know enough to look at these sorts of details - you don’t know what you don’t know.
Since this post came back up, wanted to let you know that we have longer date frequencies on the auto-shipment now! I think we go all the way up to 6 months.
Cool! Thanks very much for the heads-up
Hmm, that’s strange. I buy most of my supplements from Santa Cruz. Many of their products have high concentrations so I can feed way less than their recommended doses after figuring in my horses needs and what I’m already feeding.
it’s not their concentrate, it’s the size of the scoop. Their natural E scoops happen to hold 4000IU. That’s not any more concentrated than a scoop that’s 1/4 the size holding 1000IU
What IS more concentrated is something like Farrier’s Formula Double Strength, which has (more or less) the same amount of each nutrient in half the serving size. Same with PreElite Topline Advantage which has (more or less) the same amount of each nutrient in 8oz compared to the Grass Advantage in 16oz.
Health-E makes the ridiculous claim that their product has 'the most Vit E of any on the market" ONLY because their scoop holds over 11,000IU. It’s synthetic at that, but it equates to roughly 10,000IU of natural E. That’s not concentration, that’s just a bigger scoop
Right, and if my horse only needs 2000IU per day, I can feed a fraction of the scoop size, thereby making the bag last longer, and making it less expensive for my needs.
Yes, and that’s what I do too, it’s just not more concentrated, you’re just reducing the serving size relative to what they say to use
Just so I don’t have to start a new thread. Looking for information regarding Vit E and the winter crazies. Any insights? Quotes from another thread
I can’t see if I responded to this or not. Our website offers multiple languages, as it is also part of our biotechnology side. I don’t know why sometimes it loads in Chinese but it is not a security problem. To change from Chinese to English, click on the three lines in the upper left hand corner of the website on mobile. That will give you a dropdown menu. Look for the globe icon. Click on that and it will give you options to change the language to.
Edited because I can’t remember my right from my left.
And then there’s my resident gray menace to society, who sifted through 3 quarts of chopped alfalfa and 2lbs of pelleted feed to refuse one singular Vitamin E capsule. We use the Ultra Cruz Vit E pellets now.
I have one of these! He can sift out Abler pop rocks too. The jerk.
The rest of them vacuum it all up no questions asked
It’s possible, since one function of Vit E is to support muscle health. So, unhealthy muscles can make a horse “crazy” because his muscles don’t feel good, though it’s probably more likely to make him quieter since, well, his muscles don’t feel good lol But it depends on the horse.
