Wake Forest Claimed for $8000

Thanks for that. It made me look up the stories and look for photos. Here is an article in BloodHorse:

This Horse Racing Nation article answers the question about gelding:

During a conversation Wednesday with Old Friends’ Cindy Grisolia, she said that Wake Forest would be vanned to Park Equine Hospital in Versailles, Ky., by the end of the week. He will be gelded and have time to recuperate before joining the herd of retirees at Old Friends by the end of the year.

Yep. Kind of like that horse by Saggy, out of Joppy. What was his name?

Oh, yeah! Carry Back.

Not everyone is able to buy a season to Tapit. That doesn’t mean that there aren’t extremely useful race horse prospects out there.

Getting off onto another tangent: look at some of Carry Back’s offspring! 203 starts for Diamond in the Sky! 173 for Prince Marigold! 13 horses listed on pedigreequery with more than 100 starts and a bunch in the 90s. Since that site is usually incomplete, there are probably more. Wow.

I wonder why they are gelding him when the vast majority of their residents are intact. I guess because they were all breeding stallions at some point and he wasn’t.

He’s also quite a bit younger than most of the retired stallions. Maybe that is also a factor.

I think he’ll probably enjoy hanging out with the guys rather than in a paddock by himself.

And yet curious as the Bloodhorse article has photos of both Wake Forest and Kharafa captioned implying they were both now at Old Friends.

Kharafa stepping off a trailer “Kharafa arrives at Old Friends”.

Wake Forest standing in a barn of some type “Wake Forest checks out his new digs at Old Friends”.

I also get email from Old Friends when they have press releases and it was basically the same as the BH article. No mention of gelding and sounds like they are both now at Old Friends.
