Wanted: Sport Horse Stud - under $750

I am currently in search for a stallion to breed my Thoroughbred mare to. I am not horribly picky about the breed (as long as it will be compatable with her), but I am looking for something with a good brain (lets face it, Im trying to “tone down” my TB). I am just breeding for a replacement mount for myself. I would like to find something over 16Hh, good angle to the hind end, and a neck that ties in a bit better then my mare (she is a little low). I currently event her although she was also shown hunters.
I hope to breed her to something where I can potentially have a nice hunter (Im not looking for a “A” rated hunter, although it would be nice).
I am looking for a stud fee under $750, with this economy, the lower the better (but I do not want to sound cheap either, I still would like to produce a quality animal). I do not want to AI-Frozen (for personal prefernce reasons) and I am actually for live cover. I would honestly love to find something in the Virginia “area”. I am located in the southwestern part of the state and would like to keep my drive to a max of 4 hours from home if I can help it.
(Shorter ride for my mare and an oppertunity to meet the stallion, and some of his offspring a plus!)

Like I said, Im not picky on the breed, WBs are a plus, but the right QH or even paint maybe ok

Thanks so much for all your help!

check all of the stallion auctions…great deals to be had, but I think almost all of them do AI.

Check out the stallion service auction for the American Trakehner Association. Traks cross very well with TBs.

Finding a WB stallion for live cover in VA may be difficult.

But some stallions do not ship well so it is not impossible.

you have a pm

Bear in mind that the stud fee is the smallest of your expenses in breeding and raising a youngster. For a few bucks more you can take your pick of a lot of nice stallions. So much can go wrong it is scarey how fast bills add up.

Agree it may be difficult to find one other than a TB that does live cover. If you are willing to do AI with fresh cooled semen, you might want to check the OHBS/GOV stallion service auction. Coromino and Ironman are currently available for minimum bid (although both require a booking fee). Tantris is also available for minimum bid, with no booking fee. Although he is a Grand Prix dressage stallion, he has offspring showing successfully in hunters, eventing, dressage, and driving - and with amateur owner/riders. Another nifty stallion to consider is Farscape.

I am sure there are similar good deals in the other auctions.

Nevada

You may want to check out Nevada. Very nice w/b who throws great temperaments from what I’ve heard. I’m not positive about his current stallion fee but I think I remember hearing he can be bred LC and he’s in VA. I’d give Fairview Horce Center a call and get the details. He might be just what your looking for.

Very nice boy (I have met him) and GREAT owner. He is up near Haymarket, VA.

He is on the smaller side of 16h. He still stands for the $500 and does LC

Portofino owned by Otto Fuchs (http://www.hiltonfarm.com/breeding/) is live cover only near Gordonsville and $1000 stud fee. He is mostly a dressage horse but has sired jumpers. Probably not going to produce flat hunter movement. Not sure whether they just breed based on teasing or whether they require ultrasounds to watch the follicle. That is going to make a difference in your costs.

We can do on premises AI with Schiffon, so you save fees on shipping the container and semen extender, but we still require use of ultrasounds and charge a collection fee, but it is less than with shipped semen because fewer steps to the process. Stud fee $1250, no booking. We are just north of Richmond. Schiffon has produced hunters and jumpers and we have a few offspring here on the farm.

91 <?> Welsh stallions of all four divisions in the auction

Tamara

I “think” when the OP stated she didnt want to do “AI-frozen” I took that to read no frozen only

Maybe Im wrong, but I think fresh cooled would be okay for this mare …

I have one but he stands on my farm in NY. PM me if you want details. He crosses very well with TB and I have two of his youngsters-out of two of my TB mares who are very different looking (they are coming 4 year olds on my farm and can put you in touch with a person who owns a young mare by him out of another TB mare.

I hope this helps

Thanks!

Thank you everyone for all your help! Now to start hunting down owners! So very excited!

I think Im in love…
My mare is 16.1 (although her sire was 16.3) so she very well may add a bit of height! but 16hh is good for me!

I have heard very good things about Nevada, and his owner posts here and seems very nice. On his foals page are several out of TB mares and they all look great. He seems like quite the bargain! I alao believe he has some eventing offspring as well.

Yes, I am quite impressed with him and his offspring… Im looking to breed for a hunter (as that is what my mare was purchased for, she just decided differently).
Thanks to whoever reccomended Nevada, I hope to hear from his owner soon!

Your welcome! I recommended Nevada. I’ve always liked him and his owner seems sweet with a really great sence of humor!

Anyway, I think he’s a steal! And I do know his owner loves getting his babies on the ground!

Portofino is in the Hann. JBP, along with half brother Parabol. I have wondered if he s breeding/fertile anymore, as he is up in years, and it doesn’t seem as if he has any recent offspring. Hated to “tire-kick” as I am not in the position to move forward with a breeding right now. I have a Parabol daughter, and 2 of her granddaughters, and have toyed with line-breeding to him. Anybody know if he’s still in service?
