Odd situation. Normally horses at auction just go to the highest bidder. No sense selling to kill buyers if you could get more money. Only thing I can think of is somebody deciding dead is better than the unknown) - but that usually doesn’t mean slaughter.

Sugarcreek is special. I got a thoroughbred gelding from there when I lived in Ohio.
A high number of attendees for the horse sale portion are kill buyers. The kill buyers even get to stand around the wall in the ring the horses run through, and the auctioneer rarely looks up into the rest of the crowd for bids. At least, that’s how it went down when I was there. It was really overwhelming. Horses go in about 2 seconds flat. I had to buy my thoroughbred off a kill buyer after the auction was done.
