I have been contacted by the individual who bought 2 of the six foals. Filly was very weak and it is touch and go. A light colored colt is doing better. She is thrilled the other four were rescued and is reaching out to the rescue to stay in touch.
I have been trying to get moonshine out of there for several years now. The woman would not sell him at any price.
Did she refuse to sell him back then? I was afraid no one would buy him for that $4500 they were selling him for back then.
As an aside, when googling I saw that there are WAPs in South Africa, looking good!
Saying prayer for the poor filly!!! Please let us know how she does!
I would for sure be starting the babies on omeprazole. For foals that age it’s really cheap and keeps them eating and drinking through stressful situations.
A pox on whoever is responsible for treating these horses so inhumanely!!!
Law enforcement is working with the rescuers to get the horses who already shipped to slaughter back so this story may truly have a happy ending. Fingers crossed!
I can’t access facebook right now, but is there anything else the rescue needs?
I would take one myself of any age, these Appies are too nice for this (not that any ever deserve it!!!).
I hope the COTH wizards of truthfulness bring the full story to light eventually.
They just located 18 more in a kill pen in Texas and will be getting them as well. Not sure if there is more than just the one rescue involved or not but obviously none of this will be cheap and they will need the public’s help.
Let us know if the horses in Texas can be viewed online. A couple of old mares could have a home with me. Otherwise I’ll send a dribble to help rehome young ones.
Sounds like the individual given responsibility for the horses sent them off in different directions; less noticeable that way? Would love to know more about those purported arrangements.
@Sonesta is in Texas perhaps she will check in, does @GaitedGloryRider know?
Please post if you find out which rescue in Texas. I can send a little contribution.
I wonder if they went to the same sale as the others, just got run through and shipped earlier?
They are in a feedlot in Bowie Texas. Rugby Creek Animal Rescue also has a PayPal account and ask that you specify the WAPS horses in your donation. PayPal.Me/rcar
I can answer some of the questions.
The only connection these horses have to JG Appaloosas is the owner of these horses bred 2 or 3 mares to JG stallions in the past. I think only one of these breeding was successful. The owner also bought Waps Bentley from JG Appaloosas.
Waps Bentley has been dead for several years. He is not among the horses at auction.
Mismanagement and neglect has been going on for many years. Owner bought up horses that traced back to Wap’s Spot 2 in their pedigree. Ran the studs, mares and youngsters together and produced unsellable foal crops year after year. I seen her ads offering the pick of 1, 2 and 3 year olds for as low as $100.00. Yet, still continued to produce horses.
People have been working and gathering evidence for many years against this owner. Unfortunately, they could not get the county to take action.
What is happening now is only the tip of the iceberg.
I hope that when there is time, more details will be shared here. There is much to learn that could perhaps help avoid, even prevent these situations in the future. Even if it means working on new legislation in some areas.
Thanks for all everyone is doing for these horses !!!
According to that Rugby Creek post, there are still 15 to be searched for. I am not neccessarily an appaloosa person, but I wish everyone well.
If some ended up in Bowie, has the lot in Kaufman, TX also been checked? I understand they are one of the largest in this country, and horses from all over the U.S. end up there. The owner actually does cooperate with people searching for particular horses from time to time (not all lots do). They sell some to private owners, and some ship to slaughter.

Thanks for posting that link. I’ve donated. Thanks to all who have been working to save these nice horses.
Update: there are a lot of good people working very hard to locate and obtain possession of all these horses from T Square. The authorities are also involved and helping. Rescue funds are needed. Donations can be made to the above link. Moonshine is safe!
Wonderful news!
Wow, this is quite a rescue story! I hope all the details can be shared at some point. Sounds like it could be a novel.
OMG. I just saw this thread. Kudos to those who pitched in and saved these horses. I always admired these horses and it would have been a travesty for so many to have been lost. Sonesta, I hope Moonshine gets back to you.
I’ve always loved Appies, and always wanted either a WAP or Confetti bred horse. I got my Confetti horse some years back. My first three Appies were, respectively, Toby line, Old Painter/Red Eagles’ Peacock line, and a racebred horse that traced to the great racemare Dawndee.
For those on the West Coast, you may already be aware that Confetti Farms’ stallion is a Wap Spotted son, out of a Chocklate Confetti daughter. So there’s two lines of sporthorse Appies combined.
