Warmblood Import Nightmare
Yes, but isn’t that a risk you take for your business…you know, as a QUARANTINE facility…you might have to have a horse stay longer than you predicted. IMO this is a risk you take as part of the business. Factor it into your costs, don’t triple the price on the owner overnight. [/QUOTE

How long has this horse been there beyond the normal? Or the longest previous quarantine? Is there a contact regarding this? Beyond x number of days rate increases to…
I would imagine that there has to be some fine print or something that explains any increases in price for daily stay, beyond a certain time limit. But, in the equine world, who knows.
Define normal. Is anything with horses “normal”? Seriously. The argument “jets pets is losing out on money” is asinine at best. They are a quarantine facility. Build this risk, although unlikely, into your costs. IF it is built into the contract that after X days rate increases to Y then it would make more sense. From the OP comments it doesn’t seem as if this is the case (that’s me assuming, I obviously could be incorrect).

This whole thing disgusts me. I haven’t even looked at the trainer / owner / whatever FB page because whatever they choose to do (as far as writing to the president, writing letters, etc WHATEVER) doesn’t even really matter. Emotions run high and maybe dumb things are said / written, but facts are facts. If this horse is euthanized (and at this point I unfortunately don’t see any other outcome), I really hope they do an autopsy to show this horse didn’t have glanders and then at that point I would hope something could be done for the family.

Fact is USDA (unsurprisingly) has an outdated test. “They’re following protocol” - uhm okay owners (with deep deep pockets) of two previous horses in this very similar situation were able to get their horses released. Why was protocol able to be budged then but not now? Things just sound so fishy in this case, and not on part of the owners.

My other thought, and this is very far fetched, is could the results of the test have been fabricated or have any errors? I mean I’m leaning towards no since then western blot has tested negative 8 (?) times.

this poor horse and this poor family. Shame on so many of you for sitting here saying “I can’t believe they pulled the military card” or “I can’t believe they think POTUS cares” or “I can see now why the USDA acted the way they did (implying family / trainer are asking too many questions)”. Good grief. I’ve been following this thread and reading and silently being appalled and then watching the turn of events where posters turn ON THE FAMILY. Like, reallly??

I dont think anyone has “turned on the family”. No one has said they deserve this. I think it’s more like hey focus your energy where it can actually help. Talk to the lawyers that helped those other cases, talk to experience vets. Talk to your local representative.

Was the test performed today?

Anybody know what is in the Jet Pets contract about unexpected, extended stays? Or any other similar private or USDA operated quarantine facility? Never seen or signed a contract with one and don’t recall it ever coming join conversations with friends who have imported so clueless. Anybody know what’s “ standard” in those contracts?

Oh, and in defense if these facilities, they aren’t the ones holding the horses there. They cannot release one until USDA says they can. Not up to them but they are stuck with the horse whether they want it it not.

This. They contacted the lawyer that is the expert. He said send the horse back, euthanize the horse, or keep testing. They family chose to keep testing and is now out of money. It’s a sad situation but people made choices.

The family made choices and because they ran out of money doesn’t mean random people like the trainer get to pull the military card. Yes, the father performed a great service to this country for thirty years. I hope to have his career. That has no bearing on the horse. Honestly I’m appalled this has dragged out for so long with limited funds. That’s not fair to the horse. Quite frankly I blame the trainer.

Exotic Newcastle has basically shut down two seasons of poultry shows in California, in addition to thousands of birds being destroyed, including ones that were not ill but simply in the vicinity of detected cases.

EDITED: post was edited so I am no longer misquoted 😊

(Denali edited her post so I’m pulling my reply which is no longer on point.)

The issue of a misattributed post is due to a missing square bracket in an earlier post. You can edit your reply to pull out the extra attribution.

The USDA policy change procedure is indeed cumbersome and can be lengthy. Their policies are not “law” set by Congress but function as such. Congress does give them powers. The USDA does have the ability to put in place interim procedures- which do not need public comment etc.

So while this is not on the public threat level of bird flu, mad cow disease etc- there have been 2 high profile cases and (I am looking for the number)of not high profile false positives in imported horses that it should warrant review.

Horses are not a staple to the US economy such as they are in Germany. If they were- this would be garnering more attention from those in charge.

I reread some of my posts and I apologize if I came off snarky or trying to speak with authority I don’t have. I’m going to lay off posting- as I feel that though I have no connection with the horses or his people- my view is skewed by my frustration as a profession in the field.

Has anyone heard if the horse was tested again today as scheduled? Hoping for a happy outcome. Toes and fingers crossed.

Last comment- c ELISA isn’t standard because it picks up the antigen (protein) from a region in B mallie that is also detected from a region in other bacteria not associated with glanders. There is now a modified test but I believe it would need to be validated for import use.

Results will be released Friday, and the horse is being allowed more than one retest (according to the trainer).

Rnichols- I deleted my post which probably made things wonky. I cannot even imagine being in this family’s shoes. It is absolutely awful. I originally jumped into this discussion as people were insinuating the USDA veterinarian was being unfair in suggesting euthanasia and was pushing it arbitrarily on this completely healthy horse for no reason. As a veterinarian I know that’s not what was happening. USDA vets work a very thankless job enforcing rules nobody wants to pay attention to.

Yes the US should re-evaluate their policies and perhaps this will help to get that done but I dont believe the relatively few cases are enough to put it at the top rung of priorities right now.

Another one after the test on Thursday?

According to the trainer, yes.

“[Dr. Burke Healey] admitted that this CFt test does not need to be his last test, he can have more!”

Thanks.

USDA fee schedule is set and is the same daily rate from 8 days onward.

Jet Pets is private. From USDA APHIS site:

Private quarantine facilities will bill user fees directly to importers on a quarter hour to hourly rate. APHIS factors costs in these instances by the time spent for each service which includes travel time to ports and airports for veterinary inspections.

Update: Hireno aka Waffles (Gabby’s name) had his blood pulled today, results will be in tomorrow afternoon. Please everyone think “negative” thoughts!

With respect to Jet Pets - no, the family never signed a contract with them and has never seen anything in contract form or otherwise regarding the daily prices, or that the daily price may be raised at Jet Pet’s discretion.
