Warmblood Stallion Suggestions for a very pretty Percheron Mare

I have a really lovely Percheron mare who has been bred three times for Georgian Grandes with very nice results. Would like to try her next with a warmblood stallion, or possibly an Andalusian and am looking for suggestions. I’ll post a photo later. She is black, 17.1 hds, with a beautiful head, smooth body with a very good loin and croup; not peaky. She is uphill and has a well set on neck. She’s one of the prettiest Percheron’s I’ve ever seen with a short, almost dishy head. Sempatico and El Espiritu (Andalusian) are on the list. Also, possibly Mae Jean’s Magritte. If you know of a stalllion that has crossed nicely on Perch mares resulting in good movement, would love to hear. Pictures would be very helpful.

I bred Percheron mares for a client for a number of years to my Thoroughbred stallions with good results – one doing FEI level. I would probably look at Trakehners for her. You really need a stallion that will lighten her up. Thoroughbreds are your best bet.

Magritte is a Trakehner, so we’re thinking alike. Would also consider a dressage moving TB as long as the phenotype is right. Yes, I want lighter and a bit more neck, not to mention movement. You know, everything.

I would look to a stallion like TB Sea Accounts or a WB like Gatsby that has a lot of TB up close. I love my Irish Draught sport horse colt by Gatsby. He improved on the dams movement & front which is exactly what I wanted.

I was going to suggest Gatsby too if you want to go with a WB.

This mare has let alot of refinement come through in her last two foals, so I think I would prefer to not go full TB, but a WB stallion with refinement or a healthy dose of TB, would suit. I want substance, just not too much. And while she has a great neck for a Percheron, I don’t want to wind up with a short and thick neck.

A Fine Romance

Rubinesque Pb* might be an interesting thought. He is both Trakehner and OldNA approved. (Although I have a vague memory he’s just changed hands and is only offered frozen at the moment).

Or maybe TF Peron’s Brilliance? He’s a Trakehner stallion who is out of an Arabian mare.

Another plug for Gatsby. He’s produced some very nice horses out of heavier, including draft, mares. He consistently lightens up heavy mares, whether they are large drafts, heavy WBs, or thick QHs.

I don’t know if my stallion might interest you? He’s not a Warmblood or a TB, but he’s crossed nicely with a Friesian/Perch mare to produce 3 very nice foals to date. He is a Friesian Sporthorse (Main Book / Silver Elite), Approved for Breeding as both Friesian Sporthorse (FSA) and American Warmblood (AWS). Competing (and winning) at FEI Prix St Georges. I won’t waste your time (or cross the line too far into advertising) with alot more details in case you’re not interested, but if you are interested here is his webpage: http://www.riveroaksfarm.net/Lexington.html I just thought I’d throw him out there as an idea since he’s crossed so well already (repeatedly) with a part Perch mare, so your topic headline caught my attention  -Gigha

Classically, TBs were used to cross with draft horses. But the right sort of TBs.

Not sure what you mean by “refinement” – do you mean smaller bone & hoof? If so, that comes from not using a TB who has the amt. of bone/frame/foot you need. This is the problem with any F1 sort of cross – what the foal will get from each parent.

If you get a foal with the heavier body of the draft, and light legs, you have issues.

Like others have said, I would look at GOOD TBs or WBs w/ alot of blood. I would also look at Irish Sporthorses – those that are at least 50% TB.

Before WBs this draft/TB cross was a classic – mostly 3/4 TB, 1/4 draft. So personally, I would go with a full TB. A Fine Romance comes to mind because he has a proven record of production of athletes with good brains.

But there are others. Take a look at Denny Emerson’s site – if he has a TB standing at stud you can bet it is the “right” type of TB.

And exactly what are you breeding for? Dressage, pleasure, jumping, eventing? What is the goal for the foal?

She was prev![](ously bred to a Saddlebred for Georgian Grandes (I have one; lost the younger one and she’s due to foal a third in July) and while I said she allowed alot of refinement to come through, I never said it was too much and actually it’s been a very nice cross. Yes, I’m breeding for me and for dressage movement.

This is her 2009 Colt I lost (broken shoulder):

Her oldest colt as a 2 yr old:

He’s lovely, but I think he’s a bit heavier than I’d like to try.

River Oaks, your boy is gorgeous!

Thanks! I do like Gatsby but is there a refining stallion out there that consistently produces good dressage horses? I think Leonidas is now available only frozen? I need to check, but he’s the first one that comes to mind.

Stone Harbor Bert

Panache Acres has been doing the crosses with warmbloods and TBs. Bert is their stallion and I have seen pictures of his crosses out of a QH dam and the site has Perch crosses and he throws very good bone. I want to use him on my Irish Draught mares. http://www.panacheacres.com/bert.html

On the WB side, what about Redwine?

Here are some pictures of a full Percheron mare my Guaranteed Gold stallion was bred to:

and the resultant foal (the grey filly) as a 2 and 3 year old:

I, too, think your best bet might be a TB or a WB with a lot of TB infused into it …

Another client bred his black Percheron mare to GG as well, and the foal was just born - waiting on pictures of him now

Good luck in your search!

Have you looked at Oskar? He’s a GP dressage Trakehner, very leggy and a lovely mover. He carries some of the best Russian Trakehner blood you could wish for.

That’s an excellent point. I still have a video of him from when Hokan Thorn had him. Thanks for the reminder.
