Warning regarding ClipMyHorse.TV

This past November, I decided to not renew my subscription to ClipMyHorse.TV, since I wasn’t using it enough to justify the $99/ year charge.

They have now apparently turned my account over to a German collections agency, who is not only sending me intimidating letters, but has also jacked up the amount due:

$99.00 “Principal Claim for Services Provided”
$0.35 Interest
$15.00 Dunning Costs
$22.50 Business fee
$4.50 Flat fee for Post and Telecommunications

$141.35 Total Due

The letter contains this lovely verbiage:
"We would like to draw your attention to the fact that we have the authorisation to collect outstanding moneys, so that payment should only be made to our account and further correspondence should only be directed to our address.

In conclusion we would like to indicate that the above-mentioned deadline should be kept at all costs. Should this deadline expire unsuccessfully, we shall be compelled to take measures and proceedings against you immediately. Additional costs resulting from the ensuing legal proceedings should be avoided."

The deadline they mention is 05.02.2015.

Mind you, this is for a subscription to a service I am not using, and have not used in over a year - which is why I did not renew the subscription.

Unbelievable!

Did you ever tell them that you want to cancel??

Take it to your Postmaster.

This sounds similar to magazines to which you no longer subscribe . They simply send you an invoice for a new subscription. Far easier to ignore.

The dunning notice sounds almost Nigerian.

I would take the letter to my Postmaster.

I think the problem might be that usually they want you to tell them in advance that you will cancel the subscription. (maybe there are even deadlines for that) If you miss those deadlines, you have to subscribe for another year.

Same thing happened to me. If you ignore the notices (like I did) you will begin to get letters from a German lawyer.

Apparently, in Europe, you have to inform them you are no longer interested in their service, or else you are liable for the charges. Unlike here, where if you don’t renew, you just don’t have access to that particular service.

clipmyhorse was horrid to me when i contacted them. The attorney, on the other hand, was lovely.

I don’t remember what it ended up costing me.

I’m so sorry you are going through what i did.

Thats what I wanted to mention… In Europe you have to cancel in advance. (usually its a 3 months notice… If you miss that deadline you pay for another year…

And I don’t know whats bad about it… There are rules in each country… And especially in the US there are many rules… if you want to do something in any country, you have to follow the rules… It is tricky though to know the rules in all different countries…

Interesting. I did not know that.

I do not subscribe, however it’s a good thing to know.

Does the UK have similar rules or is this common only on the continent?

I’d ignore - it is garbage…and how likely are they to take you to small claims court…not likely, too costly for them. I have my own sense of fairness and it does not always mesh with what others would think…Like there is not much in common with justice and the law.

Clip my horse could avoid the confusion by posting their rules / policies conspicuously on their website (if they do not already)

Not that I know about. (Saying that, the only on-line subscription I have is Netflix.)

Thanks for sharing that info. I’ve been able to get by just fine with only their free content but had given thought to subscribing.

the website clearly says in english that to terminate your contract you have to do so 1 month before your renewal date. So if your renewal date is Dec 1st you have to give them notice, in writing on or before Nov 1st.

“Premium Membership shall automatically be renewed by one year unless it has been terminated no later than one month prior to expiry of the year paid for”

If you have copy of your proof of cancellation (email? Fax?) within the required timeframe I would respond to them with a copy of it.

I’ve actually found them pretty easy to deal with . . . my credit card expired and I was overdue by several months (somehow I did not realize it) and I was still able to access videos and everything. They sent an email asking for a new credit card which I provided and didn’t charge any late fees either!

It’s an amazing tool for people to have to be able to watch shows and stallion licensings and everything . . . I love their service.

Are you sure this is not from a scammer?

If it is really from the company, thank you for your warning. That is borderline scamming, in my opinion.

This is super common in Germany - I think almoSt all contracts are like that. Their cellphone contracts even have a “if you don’t suspend by this day, you automatically get a full year”.

Its a pain, but they are usually up front about it.

How is this scamming

The OP agreed to a contract, which she should have read beforehand, which said when she needs to cancel so she isn’t billed for another year. Obviously she didn’t read the contract and now has to pay for another year.

If it is the language, then, well, English isn’t so widely spoken in Germany…

Which, yes, does suck for the OP. And they should have asked you about it first, not send your things to the collector company or whatever.

OP said she decided “not” to renew, presumable before the subscription was up. It’s obvious that she did not have her credit card on file with them. I’d say that was borderline scamming to assume that she had any liability of payment, which she did not.

The language used in that letter is a reminiscent of numerous scamming letters swarming around. And interest? Snoring. They got to be kidding. Did they loan OP any money?

Of course, if the OP let them know in a timely manner that she wants to cancel, then yes, absolutely it is scamming! And in that case, thank you so much, OP, for warning everyone! If not, then it’s another ballgame.

While, yes, the language used in the letter is a little weird, it can just be written by someone not very at home with the English language. And, well, usually you pay interests when you are late on a payment…

FWIW, same same crapola from the yellow pages publication - which produced ZERO results except for the foreign sounding guy who wanted to know if we would replace his roof… I tried for six months to stop their service - sent registered letters etc - STILL they would not relent. NEVER EVER buy ad space in yellow book…

Here are their terms of use/payment. If you followed them and have proof that you did them send it to the company. Otherwise, if legit from the company, you may well owe them.
