We decided to spend hurricane Irene in the barn building jumps for our new farm. We had a great time and the whole family was involved. Just thought I would share what we came up with. The jump cups we ordered should be here tomorrow. Can’t wait to get them set up for my daughter to try out

Thanks. tTis is our new farm and we just moved in two months ago. Lots of work to do but we are getting there. Next on the agenda is to stain the wood in the barn. I can’t wait to see it when it is all done. We were back and forth about how big to make the jumps. My daughter is the only one who jumps and her pony is semi retired. We went ahead and made the standards 4 ft which is plenty big enough for them and if I ever need them bigger we can make so 5 ft standards to make bigger oxers with. The only other use they will get is to occasionally put our young home breds through a jump chute and I would never ask them to go any higher than 4 ft at 3 years old. So these should work for a while We had so much fun making them and built and painted 8 jumps 2 at a wing type standard and 18 jump poles for 400 bucks. I was thrilled and the time spent with the family was priceless!!

These look great! I’d love to make some jumps, but I am at a loss as to what raw materials to buy, in what lengths, etc., and how it all goes together. Did you have a “pattern” or instructions you used to build the standards?
Glad NC seems to have made it through Irene fairly well – it could have been so much worse!
My dad and I built jumps as a senior project in high school. Nice job!

Thanks everyone We spent $400 bucks and this is what we bought
8- 8 ft 4x4’s
18- landscape timbers
2- 8ft 2x6 for the small planks
1- 8ft 2x12 for the farm name plank
8- 8ft 2x6 for the feet cut into 16" pieces
1-2x8 plastic lattice for the gate jump
1-2x8 wood lattice for the wing standards
4- pickets for the wing standards
6-1x4 to trim the lattice gate and wing standards
1 gallon of white paint
8 qts of varying paint colors
3 inch screws
1 5/8 exterior screws
wood letters for the farm jump
2 plants for the jumps
Off the top of my head that is what we bought. You could spend a little more and make 5 ft or 6 foot standards. We opted for 4 ft ones because it is only my daughters semi retired/half blind pony jumping them and occasionally sending one of our young homebred through the jump chute. Also as an upgrade for more money you could buy different poles. We used the landscape timbers as they were about 1/6 of the cost of anything else and they have always worked for us. We really had so much fun as a family putting these together. For anyone that is mildly crafty and has a little time to spare, I say go for it. You will be so proud of what you can come up with. The possiblities are endless!!
Just wanted to add that Disney has a line of very bright colored paints that we really liked. If you are going for the bright jumper look on any of your jumps

It is a lot of fun making jumps as a family project. We did it a few years ago when the kids were still home & heavy into the jumping/showing. The jumps are still in good shape today (7 years down the road.) Like you we made various striped poles and several panels. Using 8 foot long poles made them easier/lighter to move & boy did the 10 ft wide jumps at the shows seem easier for the kids & pony too.
If you’re creative you can paint different designs on each side of the panel (example: one of ours is solid white on one side and black & white piano keyboard on the other.) Set up right (such as a vertical) you get more “jumps” to use in a small space when you can come from either side. Everything was painted so one side could be more “hunter/natural” the other side colorful for jumper look. Lots of bang for the buck
We challenged ourselves to recycle and “re-purposed” some treated lumber and deck boards the neighbors were just going to burn when they were remodeling. Made two 4 ft wide sections of a nice natural coop, a nice brush box frame, and most of the jump standards out of that for free! We used up a bunch of leftover paint from other projects and also got some cheap at Home Depot. (They seem to have an ongoing supply of mis-mixed cast offs if you ask.)
We also made six 4 ft wide stackable boxes to use 2 side by side for an 8 ft wide jump; easy to vary heights by adding another layer. One side was sponge painted to be a brick wall and the other had 2 blue boxes with stars and the others red and white stripe to assemble 3 high by 2 wide into an American flag. Drilled holes in the tops and they could be used many ways with or without flowers in the tops.
A few landscape timers with feet attached and holes drilled for flowers made it easy to dress up and change looks with $$$$ store flowers or use as natural ground lines. Lots of other decor (mini Christmas tree “brush”, fall leaves garland, pumpkins, etc) picked up on seasonal clearance was dirt cheap at Michaels/Joann’s. It was so fun getting creative and when I figured it out we had a full course of 10 jumps for about $300.
Anybody could do this with a few basic power tools, paint, and a creative spirit over a week end or two.
