Daventry - Ok, reining is fast, precise, and a big money sport. It is judged. Each exhibitor walks into the ring with a score of 70 (per tradition) and each maneuver or linked short bits of similar maneuvers, is given a score of -1.5 through 0 to +1.5. Penalties are maybe added (kicking out or bucking is a 5 point penalty). I have scribed, and judges just say a number, and maybe a penalty number, Never take their eyes off the horse in the ring to âchicken scratchâ. Score sheets are pre-printed with maneuver blocks and easy to scribe and total up for a numerical score. Score sheets are usually posted. Tradition aside, I do not think it is such a stretch to apply this to the hunter ring. Back when I tried reining myself, scoring was like hunters - judges gave one score at the end of the round. Some exhibitors were gifted per their reputation. When the scoring system changed to individual maneuver scores with a scribe and posted sheets, Reining exploded to what it is today. Hunter World could take notice.
