WEG opening ceremonies on now!

The ceremonies proceeded with few problems. However, toward the end of the event, Games officials reported that there had been a “medical incident” involving a performer. The performer was taken to the University of Kentucky Hospital. No further information was available late Saturday.

Witnesses said they saw a performer slide from his horse on the way out of the arena and fall to the ground. Medical personnel performed CPR.

Culver Academy only owns dark colored horses (some Friesians and other various just plain/normal horses) as far as I know. And I’ve been on their campus and I don’t think any of the horses that they use for things like this would be anything but dark dark bay/black.

This is what I saw from the other side of the arena:

My friend sitting with me saw someone fall off and said ‘oh no, someone fell off and he is down on the ground’. There was a decoration that obscurred part of our view of the area. Several people gathered around, and then someone started picking up the potted bushes and placing them around the group. We could see someone performing CPR. After a short time a medical transport of some type, like a gurney on a small vehicle, came up, a board was removed presumably to place the rider on, which seems typical in rider falls. However as they put the rider on the gurney, someone was over the rider performing vigorous CPR, and as they rolled out, someone held up a sheet. It was rather concerning, and we are all praying that there is a more positive outcome for the performer.

per the Lexington Herald-Leader editor on Twitter (Peter Baniak), the rider is in stable condition.

The main Games site says the rider is currently in stable condition and that they have no further information. Prayers that the story has a happy, healthy ending.

VS, you are in Canada, how did you get it? I can’t see anywhere to click for Live Stream. All I have is the promo video. ???
I ended up paying for it (around $40 on FEI-TV). After you do that, you click on the icon on the bottom left (LIVE). Oh, and I read somewhere else that you have to clear your cookies–a concept I am definitely unclear on-- so I logged off and then went right onto FEI-TV and that seemed to work.

Per a friend volunteering at the WEG who was seated at the exit:

As he was exiting the arena near where we sat ringside, the cowboy dressage man slipped from his horse, looked to have suffered a heart attack. As the final songs and stunts were performed, the medics were doing CPR …

As an FYI, the camera men have no control over what goes out over the air. They just keep shooting their assigned location; it is the director who sits behind a console with monitors in front of him, on which show all the shots available to him at any given time.

He is the one who decides which camera is the one which actually goes out over the air and can be seen by the likes of us.

So, it definitely the director’s fault for the awkward cuts from one shot to another. Depending on his instructions from his producer, it was either his fault or the directives from the production company (who had reasons of their own – perhaps political; I know that Lexington is anxious to show what a well rounded, cosmopolitan city it is. Highlighting their symphony and opera singers and ballet may have been the idea of the councilmen/mayor).

I know that in all the time I lived there, I never knew that Lexington even had any of those things. Or cared. Which is the feeling of 98% of the viewers, I bet.

We will never know whose ill advised plan it was to show so little of the horses (which got less and less and the show went on) – but it certainly had nothing to do with the cameramen.

The “cowboy dressage man” was Eitan Beth-Halachm. At one of the last shots before he started exiting the arena, he was sitting on his horse at a standstill (looked like they were in the middle of the arena, but hard to tell from the USEF feed). He didn’t look well - maybe like he had gotten overheated. He was a bit pale looking and his face was sweaty. Sending jingles for his recovery.

Very glad to find out this morning that the rider is stable. Hopefully he will be well and home soon. Poor guy, what an ending to his exhibition.

I loved, loved, loved his exhibition. Hooing we get good news on his condition in coming days.

Thanks for the update on the rider, everyone.

Can somebody who paid for the FEI feed tell me if you have access to non-live archived events? For instance, can I watch dressage Monday night after I get home from work?

Thanks.

Also found out via google that the fellow who was hospitalized was riding a Morgan, which is my favorite breed. Jingles for his recovery.

I made my opinion known on the Carr Hughes FB site.
I am not into this ‘just be thankful they are live streaming at all and it’s free.’
Of course, I’d be really pissed if I paid for that! I am still debating paying for feitv.

I was at the opening ceremonies and the images on the jumbotrons at either end of the stadium really enhanced my enjoyment of the ceremonies- from where I was seated I had a great view of the ring but a not-so-good view of the singers.

I wonder if this was the feed that the people at home were viewing- it was great if you were at the stadium, but I can see where viewers at home would be upset.

Oh, that’s an interesting question, khp vol. Could very well be.

I think I’ll move to some obscure European country (say Latvia) bring along a quarter horse and set myself up as the reining team for the next WEG.
Ooh, ooh, maybe you could board at Anna Crew’s.

Really enjoyed the opening last night we had a beautiful night for it. The music was outstanding and I enjoyed all the horses. Well done!! The parking was a breeze and so was getting out of there. It worked like clockwork. Guess all that experience with Rolex made the difference. The park looks amazing!!!:yes::yes::yes::yes:

Yes, you can replay it in the archive section.
