Carr Hughes produces Rolex and they produce it well so I’m hesitant to pin the horse/musician ratio on them. The more I think about it, the more this sounds like an NBC screwed up mandate. It wasn’t just the ratio, it was that they obviously had not planned ahead of time where the cuts would be because they were in such disruptive places. My favorite was when they were focusing really intently on a violin and then the crowd went wild, shocking the cameraman/producer into thinking something broadcast-worthy was ocurring, causing the camera to swing wildly away to find Stacy Westfall spinning awesomely.[/QUOTE]
I am still playing devil’s advocate. Maybe this event was a bit overwhelming to the average camera guy. When you are taping a jumping round, and that is the purpose of your recording, it is pretty obvious you focus on the horse as they go around. Perhaps a tempi change looks like a horse goofing off to the camera guy, not as a skilled exercise. Until the crowd reacts, they don’t realize that the movement IS special and by that time it is too late for the feed.
I have no idea what the issue was. Lack of education? Lack of audience interest? Interns at the controls?
