Welsh/Warmblood Crosses

I have seen a few of these crosses in the large pony ring and quite like them.

Has anyone attempted to breed them taller? As a vertically challenged hunter rider I would be very interested in finding this type as my next horse.

How tall are you wanting?

Stay tuned. I am sure that there are a few of these crosses that have gone oversize. But, boy do I love them. I have two out of a Warmblood mare by Donnerhall.

I wish I could have more breedings for my Blue Who to the warmbloods as this is an excellent cross!!

Welsh/Warmblood Crosses

Windswept - ideally I’d like 15:2 - but if they had the step could look smaller - I’m 5’1".

Sandy - at what point do you know if they will go over? Can you tell as early as 2 or 3?

If I had a good WB mare I would certainly be breeding that cross, just lovely!

I also like the cross but as long as you’re breeding for a horse I think you’re safe. Too many of the ponies bred are wrong sized.

Perhaps consider breeding a WB mare to a larger welsh stallion, like a section B. Most likely a 16+ hand mare bred to such a pony would give you waht you are looking for. By using the WB as the mare component you stand a better chance of size as womb allows the fola to develop larger than if the mare were the welsh half.

I agree. Crossgates Larasan is a Section B and 14 hands! Perfect!

What I neat idea, I’d never though of a Welsh/WB Cross- I wish I had one when I was a kid transitioning form ponies to horses.

I would think that Whispered Wish would have something to say here about her lovely German Riding Ponies.

Whispered Wish has some GORGEOUS ones. It’s a very nice cross.

I’ve had quite a few clients breed WB mares to our Welsh stallion. The crosses have been wonderful!

You can see some of them on our foal page (which I desperately need to update) at http://www.welshponies.com/mardifoals.htm

This is our Oldenburg/Welsh colt:

He can MOVE!!! We were so impressed, we immediately repeated the cross for 2011.

Our two year old cross is so breathtaking that I want to hide her when company comes!! Talk about stealing the show.

Empire’s Power can be used to downsize also.
He has 69% welsh blood. Just so one realizes that a pony will not be the result when crossed with a warmblood.

There are several TB mares that had lovely lovely foals by Power this year.

And last year - a 17 hand sweedish warmblood had a beautiful filly by Power.

This is NOT a sales ad–but she is listed on my webspage under client owned Power offspring for sale. Her name is Ankura.

Here is a Nevada 4 year old out of a small, Welsh mare. He was 14.3 as a 3 year old. Not sure of his mature height.

Hopefully WhisperWish doesn’t mind but these two foals are out of my mare. Nootka is a German Warmblood about 15.3h and they are by Mardi Gras. I am sure she will chime in a tell you more:yes:

I’ve contemplated breeding my Trakehner mare to a Welsh, so I think it’s a lovely idea. She’s only 15hh, though, and her daughters so far have been about her size, so I might actually stand a chance at getting a pony out of her.

Don’t think I’ll actually breed her again, though. Having too much fun riding her, and I’m keeping her 2007 daughter, so the barn is full!

Actually the German Riding ponies evolved from crossing the smaller WB mares with Welsh and Anglo/Arabs. If you look at the pedigrees of many top GRP’s you will see some Welsh several generations back.

We’ve bred a small WB mare to Welsh and the results were very good. We also bred her to 2 different GRP’s - these all went “hony” size but are super under saddle and doing very well with their owners in competition.

Welsh Warmblood crosses

Friends of mine in Germany stand the Welsh B stallion Greylight http://www.ponyzucht-sietland.de/Greylight.htm who was bred to a Hanoverian mare by Matcho AA - Eichendorf last year. Here’s a picture of the foal http://www.ponyzucht-sietland.de/images/Fohlen2010_MaryPoppins_3.jpg Isn’t she a cutie ??
For more pics of the filly please go to http://www.ponyzucht-sietland.de/Greylightfohlen.htm (scroll down to “Mary Poppins”) The owners have been so taken with the foal that the mare has been rebred to Greylight
Enjoy!

We are doing the WB X Welsh cross for a 2011 foal. There was a large pony that showed here on the Ontario circuit last year that I absolutely loved! When I had the opportunity to purchase a smaller Cdn WB (Dutch WB X Trak) I jumped on it.

She was bred to Llanarth Senator, but I don’t think she caught. We are going to re-breed her to our Morton’s Harkin if she didn’t catch to Senator.
I also have two other mares that will be joining in the WB X Welsh cross in a few years. The first is our imported Oldenburg WB mare who is still currently showing. She is by Corradino out of Wachtel by Wenzel I

The second mare named Katonah B is leased out for breeding. She has a very interesting pedigree. She is by the gorgeous Aristos B (DWB) out of BRP mare named Sandy by Kooihuster Folkert (Downland Folklore X Atje)

She has already produced two fabulous foals. One was by Castle Cove
http://www.elitehuntersales.com/CastleBay.html
and the other by Halcyon Sir Lancelot named Country Grammar http://crewridge.atspace.com/horses.htm.

All three of these mares will be bred to Mortons Harkin for fabulous large pony hunters! I can not wait.
