Western pleasure horses and natural self-carriage

This is a 2016 thread…

Yes, but it was brought back to life by a poster with a related question; I’m assuming it came up when he/she posted the other thread and this showed up as a “similar” topic.

I stand corrected! What is a Western Riding Horse? And are the bred as their own little scion of the Quarter Horse book?

They are pattern horses. Typically wp bred with a little more life in their expression. Good lead changes and even strides for riding patterns.

Western Riding is a class. Just like Trail or Western Pleasure or Horsemanship are classes. It’s a class for advanced horses with great lead changes and able to keep a steady pace. Some horses seem to really scoot through the class, others go slower, but the goal is to keep your pace consistent throughout. Harley D Zip excelled at Western Riding classes. In the video he’s ridden by his trainer, but went on to compete with his adult amateur owner.

Just here to chime in with my favorite video of a true WP horse at liberty - AQHA Kissin the Girls… from 2014: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqSURg8G9lc

Love that horse! There is a video of him as a baby (yearling maybe) that shows his way of carrying himself and movement is natural for him. Shame what that b!$@% did to him to leave those scars on him.
