What breed is your Hunt horse?

This past season I hunted two TB geldings. One was an ex-racehorse that showed in the Children’s Hunters and is now my hunt horse. The other one is younger never raced that I took out about half the time.

The huntsman and whip both ride TBs. The majority of horses in the field are draft crosses.

What does everyone else ride?

I have a 5 yo TB that is in her first full season hunting, and I hunted her mother for years. Mom is an OTTB I bought as a 3 year old.
You just can’t beat a TB for hunting, they have the speed, the endurance, and IME the brain for it. Of course some of them can get a little wacky til they figure it out, but I have found that is usually due to prior poor handling as opposed to being characteristic of the animal itself.
TB’s all the way.

At present I can’t claim to have a made hunter- the now retired qh (27) was the last, and his buddy my OTTB who was put down a couple of years ago. I hunted a quarter horse for 20 seasons, presently make do for occasional hunting with an oldenburg/qh cross and an appendix qh who will make his debut next week. I prefer TB or QH, hunted a great Hanoverian one season though. And, have to say, the best hunter I ever threw a leg over, the legendary Gilhooley’s Ghost, was mostly tb with a touch of percheron.

I have a draft cross (Belgian/TB) that keeps up just fine with energy to spare.

Never considered one breed preferable over another - just whatever horse can do the job and is a good match with the rider.

Paints

My two hunt horses are both paint geldings. One is the son of one of my first hunt horses (actually my second hunt horse) and the other is a grandson. I hunted his mother also but she has since been sold to a lovely lady who hunts with Hillsboro in TN.

I have two up and coming prospects, both 1/2 Thoroughbred paint mares. They are both Granddaughters of the first mare. They both have been out with the beagle pack at ages two and three. I think the one is ready to graduate to Foxhounds but I really dont’ need her on my foxhunt string right now. I’m going to sell one of the ones I’m fox hunting now and then bring her up with the other one right behind.

I’ve always hunted paints except for my first hunt horse who was a very quiet Tb.

I also have a 1/2 Tb paint yearling who’s mother (Tb) hunted and steeplechased and her half sister whips with our hunt. Her mother was our huntsman’s horse.

So basically I have my own line of hunt horses. These horses also event and are just good all around amateur, easy to handle, safe horses.

Well, we’ve got a variety in the barn. All hunt, have hunted, or will hunt…the seasoned horses include: 3 TB’s, a Han/TB cross, 2 TBX’s (3/4 TB 1/4 Perch…one definitely looks like he has more than the other)…the one’s to be started this year include 2 OTTB’s and a Han/TB cross.

my signature says it all…

Mine is a 7/8 TB appendix QH. I think the TB in him gives him a big gas tank (he has NO bottom) and the QH part gives him that extra dash of calmness when necessary. He’s homebred and we had a friend trailer him around to rodeos when he was a 2 yr old. That horse is fazed by nothing.

Currently I am hunting a Hungarian/TB… I have a few TB’s waiting in the wings though…

Currently only have a lost-papered QTR mare. Use to hunt an OTTB who had also played polo. She was as perfect as my current mare.

Have a yearling QTR in the wings. He is being ponyed down the road & being exposed to all things found “out there”. We did “tin whistles w/ raging waters flowing under them” last Friday, courtesy of last weeks massive snow melt. Also did “Mud up to his knees & hocks 101” that day. He got an A+.

Cleveland Bays and Cleveland TB crosses. Love 'em!

I’ve hunted both my horse a TB/APHA cross and my boarder who is a full QH. Both are a blast to take out hunting.

We have 2 TB’s, 2 Dutch WB/TB’s, and a Trakehner. Our broodmare, who was the BEST hunt horse in her day, is a Trakehner/TB. All of the WB crosses are at least 50% TB, and Trakehner’s by themselves have lots of “blood” in them. I sold a lovely hunt horse the other year, he was a TB/QH gelding.

Formerly Thoroughbreds and Tb/QH (notice the bowler hat which I wore c. 1970’s). Now Welsh, and Welsh/Arab. Fabulous hunting machines. No wonder kids can really boogie out on their Welsh ponies in the hunt field - the breed is solid, dependable, reliable, talented, and quick. And they don’t wear out.

I am on my third

my first was a leggy 16.1h QH
we did our first hunts, first field, together [photo circa '91-'92]

he has been on a few hunts and is [I hope] over his loading issues.

armandh -

What a beautiful QH – he looks exactly like the Welsh (large) pony that I will be starting in the hunt field next season. I have admired and been positively impressed by every QH I’ve seen in the hunt field – perhaps because my first foxhunter was an appendix QH (actually more TB than QH), and she was spectacular over fences and dead quiet in the field. The perfect hunter.

From what I’ve been told, Buddy is a QH with some TB. I see only QH in him, though. He’s dead calm and sane, but has plenty of hoo-rah when I need it. He doens’t have papers, and his history is a bit cloudy.

This is after 3 hours of hunting, and he looks fresh as a daisy. I hunt him in a Bitless Bridle, and he’s just awesome.

Nest season I’d like to take my Danish WB out. I think he’s got a good mind for hunting, but with his extremely long canter strides, we might pass up the huntsman and hounds!

Thoroughbred.

I’ve also hunted another TB, appendix QH and a hanoverian.

I guess I should show photos of mine

1st one was a 15.2 H Tb, I dont have a photo handy.

Second one was a 14.3 H paint mare

I also hunted her half cousin

http://members.aol.com/LeslieGra/dj.html

They I hunted a couple of her sons, actually I hunted three of her son’s a time or two but not much.

Here is one of her sons I hunt now.

Then I started hunting a mare I bought at auction.

Here’s a nice cubbing day with those two horses

I’m on the chestnut.

Now I hunt a son of the chestnut mare who is also a grandson of the original palomino mare through his sire’s side.

He gets switched off with the son of the original mare.

That’s a friend of mine on him.

Here is the one I’m starting. She’s just on beagles for now. Shes’ a granddaughter of the original mare.

My older hunt horse is a TB/Clyde/Shire cross, my current horse is a painted pure TB…with the best mind of any horse I’ve ever had. Daughter hunts a big QH, student hunts a TB. Many people out her ride draft crooses, but the coyote runs wear them out!!! Not a TB!!
