What breed is your Hunt horse?

Crosscreek,

I’m going to check you out next time I breed a mare. It will be a while though as I’ve got seven horses.

Fire-Breathing Dragon (aka- Race-bred Thoroughbred)

never, ever, ever wears out… even when he’s out of shape he still manages to wear ME out. He hasn’t been hunting lately because of arthritis issues, so this weekend was the first time I’ve ridden him (walking around my property) since Thanksgiving. I’ve been having a few soundness issues myself and have just been allowed to ride this past week (trying to talk dr. into letting me hunt this weekend on one of my MFH’s super laid back horses that I just might steal).

I’m hoping that my little guy (Irish Draught) will be a hunter, though I have ~3 or so yrs to wait before I get to take him hilltopping. He’s already tearing up and down slopes at high speeds with my dog for fun (other horses just watch) and doing nice sliding stops, so I have hopes for him. I’d also love to do the High Performance Hunter competitions on him when he grows up. Anyone do one of these with their hunt horse yet?

Promlightshine - I too hunt my Standardbred. I also have a TB and have always hunted TB’s but this new guy is Wonderful!!! He has the stamina and the speed to keep up with anything we do plus he is super tough and has a much better brain than any TB. I was a die hard TB woman but this guy is quickly changing my mind. most mornings I pick him over my mare to take hunting.

My main hunt horse is a Belgian/Welsh pony cross. http://www.draftymanor.com/thuy/070527/ He’s only 15 hh, but feels much bigger. Kind of like my Mini Cooper.

I’m bringing along a Shire/TB/QH cross http://www.draftymanor.com/nero/071027/oct44.jpg and I’m considering a TB/Cob cross that I have for the future.

and now for something different…

My hunt horse is a Lipizzan. Yes I know that’s unusual, but she’s an unusual girl. She hates dressage (her former life) and loves hunting. She’s not that fast but makes up for it with brains, a bomb-proof nature and great hound sense. The first time I hunted her she “got it” and we’ve been having fun since then. She will go quietly in the field but I have whipped-in on her in a pinch when our help was needed, and she is fine with that too. I only wish she would live forever…

I hunt an ottb [retired from the track 6 yrs ago] and he loves it!He is such a gentleman. My daughter hunts her very steady App gelding. She gets a lot of compliments on him whenever we go out. Most of the members ride Qh X’s or draft X’s all very nice. Two of the Qh X’s are in their mid 20’s and look and act like teenagers.

I hunt a small lost papered QTR mare. She is a steady gal and a joy to hunt.

My mare is a 15.3 H 7/8 TB 1/8 Clyde, dark brown. She is great to hunt and totally loves it; LOTS of go from her racing TB sire and greating jumping and brains from her 1/4 Clyde Open jumper mom.

I would love a couple.

My hunt horse is a Trakehner and I also hunt Bitless.

I have an OTTB that is in the wings. He, for sure, will be wearing a bit when I take him out! He’s been on several hunter paces and I might get really brave this year and hunt him.

She is also very lovely to look at :D.

Mares vs. Geldings?

I’m currently hunting two geldings but I have found over the years that I prefer mares for hunting. Anyone else have any thoughts on that? I think they are a little more independant minded in the group.

Well, I love mares but have to be careful to teach them to turn sideways when we check so they won’t kick the horses who get too close (that’s a euphemism for bumping into us) But yes, I find mares gutsy and independent

I agree with the mares for hunting although my gelding did a great job. Our Masters best horses were geldings, especially our huntsman. Her guy was/is the consummate hunt horse .

I really think it has a lot more to do with character.

Middy-did you find out how old your stb is? I looked him up on the usta site. There is a guy with his name from VA. He should have a neck tatto but here are the stats. People don’t realize many stbs are jogged about 8 miles a day to remain in race shape. They are bred to be hardy horses. So, I’m not surprised in any way about yours.

I’m hoping to do some hunting this year -likely drag which is fun but… Regardless of the type I will be enjoying time on my horses and know even if I’m exhausted they will not only keep up but get me home

What a lovely, lovely creature.

For the brief bit that I hunted I rode many Irish Drafts. I found that they weren’t too smart… but didn’t blink out in the field. I was working for a guy who imported hunt horses, then he decieded to come up tp Canada and buy draft x and now thats all he does…

My lad is a Danish Warmblood, imported from Denmark in 2005

A GOOD mare will beat a good gelding hands down. The key is getting a good one as it is harder to find a good mare than a good gelding…does that make sense?

The horse I most wanted to steal

this past weekend in Nevada was a big brown mare, packing a 7 yo boy. I inquired, and she is half warmblood, 1/4 saddlebred, and 1/4 arab.
