What do you like reading about in blogs? Edit: she's gone :'''(

Cried in my cubicle! Congratulation on all you’ve accomplished and all you will continue to accomplish in your career.

Ok, so now I am crying too. So beautifully written, such an amazing journey with such an amazing special horse. She was lucky to have found you! Although I am sure she would say that luck had nothing to do with it. She Picked you! You, your Mom, Kip, etc. managed her so well & allowed her to be all she could be. We will miss your stories of your adventures with Wondermare but wish you the best over your next big hurdle, Vet School! Keep us posted on your progress & Nikki’s adventures in “retirement”. Somehow I think she will take that word lightly. You, Ms Supershorty are very special to all of us that have watched you grow into the Horsewomen that you are. And you ARE all that the word implies!

:applause: OMG, what a superb writer, besides you and your filly being off-the-charts amazing!

Love this. What an awesome little chestnut mare … And you are clearly a very talented writer and rider! Best of luck with school, and hopefully you can get some nice babies from Nikki!

Yes, this.

Got the Monday morning email from COTH and saw the teaser for this. Decided to click on the link. MISTAKE. I’m so touched by your writing style here supershorty! You’re able to express the things that I’ve felt about my ponies since i was a little girl.

Best of luck to you and Sassy-Pants Nikki!

I’m crying after reading that! Thank you so much for sharing your story, Emily. I enjoyed every single one of your blog posts, but this last one was amazing. Congrats to you and Nikki on a fabulous partnership. Most of us can only hope to have such a bond with a horse.

Retired life is super rough, in case anyone wanted to know Nikki’s thoughts.

Still looking at probably another 4 months or so before I get to go see my favorite lady, but she’s having a great time trail riding every day with my mom (and snuggling with my parents’ dog).

Living the life!

So cute!! Thanks for posting.

Adorable and thanks for the update!

How are school and work going?

Just school at this point  It’s good. It’s crazy. I didn’t know you could learn so much in such a short period of time, or be so tired and be able to keep going. I love it. I’m exhausted. I’ve had more coffee in the last 10 weeks than I think I’ve ever had in my life. There’s a lot of time in class and even more time in anatomy lab. But then sometimes, we get fun things like kittens! or giraffes!

5 weeks left and then I’m done with my first semester, which is crazy.

Is it “just” vet school right now? Or are you simultaneously doing vet school and research?

The craziest part is pulling some of those anatomy words out of nowhere in 4th year clinicals or on boards! It’s amazing how much sticks in the back of your brain somewhere.

Aw yup looks like a tough life she’s living.

Right now, I’m just in the DVM curriculum. The way my program works, I’ll do the first 2 years of the DVM (with summers spent doing research) and then pull out to go do the PhD portion. Hopefully I finish the PhD in 3-4 years, which I realize is ambitious for a basic science PhD, but then I go back and complete the remainder of my DVM after that.

I briefly entertained the idea of trying to do research now while I’m in classes, but realized pretty quickly that it sounded good in theory, but wasn’t going to be as manageable as I’d hoped.

I was easily on track to finish my PhD in microbiology in 4 years until I got hurt and decided to just do the masters route. You can totally do it if you have funding, and a project that cooperates reasonably well. Good luck!

Yes, just don’t agree to generate a mouse or something, and you’ll be fine. Most of the MD/PhD students I know have been successful in finishing within 4, the only one who didn’t wanted an extra year to bump his paper up to Nature/Science quality.

Sounds like a full plate! Keep up the good work! And, awww, kittens! Giraffes!! Awesome.

Nikki’s new year’s resolution is to become a magical woodland creature. She’s really appreciating living where she can be out naked in December!

She has a shed in her pasture that apparently she likes to nap in, but my (semi-horsey) father felt that calling it a shed wasn’t befitting of a Princess, so he calls it her “summer house.” She’s definitely not getting spoiled at all
