What English saddle? QH with wide load!

For those of you who have those wide shouldered, sorta flat backed QHs…can you give me an idea of what English saddle brand has worked for you?

Back story…My now 9 yr old QH has bodied up more since I purchased my Amerigo CC saddle. The panels under the cantle are causing him some discomfort and I think its time to bite the bullet and find something else. For me, the Amerigo is THE saddle! I love it, but his comfort is more important than mine.

Can ya’ll give me some suggestions on saddle brands that would suit both of us without going custom and breaking the bank? I have a long femur so I need an 18.5 seat. We do jump some out on the trails and I prefer a saddle with a thigh block and a little “comfy” for my old ass.

I did try the Black County Quantum before I bought the Amerigo, but I felt like I was hovering over his back, not sitting down on it.

Suggestions would be wonderful!

My QH is named Angus, because he is black and as wide and flat-backed as an Angus steer. I have Wintecs (dressage and AP) with the adjustable gullet. He’s up to an Xtra wide, so he better not get any wider! I used to be a synthetic saddle snob, but I’ve really grown to love my Wintecs!

So COTH finaly puts in a Westen forum and someone want to know what kind of English saddle for a QH.

QH does not automatically mean Western horse. You might get a better answer in another forum.

I just bought an Ovation jump saddle at a really nice price, because apparently Ovation is changing over to adjustable trees and the tack shop was trying to get rid of old inventory.

I got a a wide tree that fits my big old chunk of a QH just fine. It also comes in a long flap and has knee and thigh blocks.

My guy has a bit of a wither but not much. I used to ride in a Duett Rondo but found the hoop tree pitched me a bit too far forward. The Ovation is a better fit for us both.

Ditto on the Ovation. I just got one for my built-like-a-tank Paint gelding, and had searched high $ and low $ for one to fit him and also that would have a flap long and forward enough for my longer than normal upper leg.

It has the adjustable tree.

 I have that same issue, having really long thighs.

How do you like the adjustable tree?

I have a couple of Thornhill saddles for mine. For the price I’ve been quite happy with them.

Well, bless your heart. Thanks for being so helpful.

To others who did give me some suggestions, thanks for the replies. I will check them out.

Good Luck Outfxed. I know absolutely nothing about Englisih Saddles but do know what a pain it is to fit a super wide quarter horse. Glad a few people were gracious enough to try and help! Come on back any time.

Mine’s not a super wide QH, but he is a super wide Morgan. I have the Pessoa Gen-X (adjustable gullet) and it fits him great. Just barely fits in the x-wide gullet, but it does fit and the rest of the saddle conforms to him very well.

pAint: I didn’t switch the trees, the tack shop did it for me, so it was easy for me! Ha ha. It didn’t look all that easy as she was doing it, though, and she’s done a ton of them. It fits my horse and fits me, too, so I was happy to find it. I’d tried a couple from online used saddle shops, where the used ones were twice what I paid for the Ovation, new.

The Ovation rep let me try it on my horse, which was great.

Pretty much every other saddle I tried either sat me in a hole, or my knees stuck way out in front of the flap.

My QH hunter wears a wide tree Amerigo Vega, while all of my other QH all around horses have done well with the Harry Dabbs A/O Saddles.

I don’t see where the OP posted about a QH being only a western horse.

Instead of being so snarky, point them in the right direction w/o being mean.

With my 15.3HH (sticked), very full bodied, and a tad (alot) fat QH, I ride only english. My saddle of choice is the one I use on my 14.2HH arab and my 15.1 1/2H Rocky mt. Arabian Saddle Company Solstice wide width, and my butt likes an 18" seat.

The QH has a 56" girth, and yes did use an extender which was about 2"more when I used it.
The arab wears a 44" girth.
The rocky wears a 48" girth.

He was a very big boy. Did they western QH jog omg it was dreamy to sit to since at the time I only posted with my arab and other arabs. I GPS’d his jog/trot and he could do it at 2.1 - 2.5 mph. He was SO smooth at that gait, and no he had no low head to the ground thing going on. He was broke english, to ride trail since I ride ONLY english. He was sold a couple years ago, and the new owner rides him western. But still a QH and still a trail horse. He liked that best. He was never shown. He had real talent and did really well as a trail horse. Big one at that. He was really hard to get on since I am 5’5". I raised him from a weanling and his parents were 14.3H and 15H.

An older Pessoa A/O fit my QH – high(ish) withers and broad shoulders – as if it had been made for him, and it fit my long femur pretty well, too. Hope you find something with a great fit for both of you.

I should add that I tried an older Pessoa EQ and it fit great. They just don’t make them anymore, and after scouring Ebay and various other resale sites I moved on.

The 24K saddle (??) also fit, but I didn’t like their either gold or glaring black logo, so I passed.

I have a County Competitor WXW, fits my really wide qh great. And me.

Check out Duett Saddles too… perfect for the wide/flat backed.

My gelding has essentially no withers and is very flat backed. I trialed both a XW County Innovation and a XW Black Country Ricochet and went with the Ricochet. It fits him great and I love it!

I truly appreciate the input ya’ll have generously offered. Am compiling a list of saddles to check out and information gathering. Very helpful to have a starting point!
