I like the Stomp Stoppers and would recommend them. My oldest pair are on their 4th season are still in great shape if they weren’t going threadbare.
You’re supporting a real life small business. They stay up better than any brand I’ve ever used. They have a good selection of colors. They reliably last more than 2 seasons in my experience. And best of all, they do affordable custom boots. Their custom boots have been AMAZING for my 12h donkey who is between sizes in every single off the shelf brand but desperately needs fly boots.
With that said, I have some minor criticisms. They fit more snuggly than other brands of the same style, even when custom fit. Because of that, I’ve had more rubbing and even minor swelling/irritation from them, not unlike I’d experience with true snug fitting fly boots. Never bad enough for me to avoid them, I just feel I need to be proactive about taking them off every night. My other minor complaint is that the Velcro doesn’t stay closed at the bottom as well as other brands due to how it’s one continuous vertical piece. They are slightly more prone to come off than some other brands I’ve used.
But they are the only ones I will use for my donkey!
My late gelding sported the pink ones one year just so I could look at a different color lol. This year both horses are wearing last year’s orange pair but I ordered blue for next go around.
Idk the orange is matching the fly mask which was not on purpose
I buy hot pink because it is easier to see in the tall grass. Warrior didn’t have any that color on Amazon so I had to order red, but those are easy to see too. I could never find green or blue in the grass. I don’t need matchy matchy - I need not mowed up by the bush hog.
lol one of mine wears orange fronts and pink backs and the other wears blue all around. It’s a sizing thing - different colors for different sizes - to make it easier for the BO to put the right boots on the right legs!
I much prefer the subtle, matchy matchy look, but dang it if I can’t see the pink and orange from acres away vs the blue. The mud really does cake on and cover the blue faster than the safety neon colors.
Both of my horses get rubs from the hind boots, and seem to find them uncomfortable. Definitely the right size, I tried fitting them super loose, a little tighter, etc. Happened with both shooflys and warriors.
Am I doing something wrong? Or do other people have horses that can’t stand them on the hinds?
Huh. I’ll take a good look today. Are you able to remove yours at night? Mine are on from 630am til 830. But every single night they are off over night.
No, I leave them on 24/7. I may be able to try that when the horses come live at home, but my young mare hates them so badly she will lie down and try to take them off.
There was a thread a few months ago with someone who had a similar problem. Depending on the horse’s conformation, Shoo Flys won’t fit. The shape of the leg doesn’t fit within the tube and the boots will deform (uncomfortable and causes rubs).
I was just going to ask about this. I haven’t tried Shoofly boots, but I did try the Chick’s Saddlery knockoffs and I’m having this issue. They fabric is so stiff that it’s tight around the pastern and digs into the top of her feet above her hoof. Behind is the worst, and she hates how they dig into her legs. I’ve measured correctly, and tried the biggest size, and it’s still an issue. The smaller size won’t even Velcro around and she is NOT a big horse. It’s very expensive to return the boots, so now I’m afraid to try the Shoofly ones, in fear I will have the same issue.
So I lied upthread. I ended up buying both my mares, including my larger mare, a set of $25 Harrison Howard boots from Amazon. The large fits my WB mare quite well!
I checked the fit on my Shoo Flys and they sit just above the coronary band and I can easily get my finger in the opening. I’ve had no rubs and very happy with the product.
Gotta say though $25 dollars on the Harrison Howards sound crazy inexpensive. Anyone know how long they hold up?
