I am talking mature dogs, not puppies…
DHLP every 3 years until 8-9 yo then stop. Rabies as required by law (every 3 years in VA).
I used to run titers instead of getting the DHLP after all puppy shots were done but last time I requested that it was stupidly expensive and he still ended up needing a booster anyway.
Thank you Slabsided. May I ask, what prompted you to needing a booster?
As an adult dogs, only rabies. If there is an epidemic of parvo around then my vet has given them that. Otherwise Nothing else and all lived to old age. One dog occasionally had to have rabies booster because he tangled with a coyote and got bitten but thats all. Rabies is required every 3 yrs in Ma unless the dog has had contact with a wild animal, then its a booster, and then a 1yr shot before you can go back to 3 yr. even if the dog has a long history of rabies vaccination.
Just had Zinny at the vet for this, so:
Rabies (3 year)
DA2PP (3 year)
Lyme
Lepto
Vet said lepto came into the area with hurricane Sandy and they lose unvaccinated dogs to it yearly since then. The lyme vax now comes with a guarantee and the company will pay for treatment if your dog does contract the disease. Lyme central, here. Vet has also seen cases of distempter in unvaxxed or not current dogs.
Thank you Pezk. That lines up with my understanding. Had to get a rabies booster on dog once due to a raccoon encounter.
Thanks Simkie.
Mine got the dual strain canine influenza year as they travel and compete regularly. Rabies and Distemper combo every 3. Adding lepto in due to concern of increased disease prevalence. I don’t typically give lyme because I keep them on Bravecto. The day there’s an anaplasmosis vaccine I will have it shipped and start vaccinating my own
I get Parvo/Distemper - my dog is older and they are in the group of most susceptible, Bordetella - because my dog goes to a groomer and boards, and both Influenzas (H3N2 and H3N8). I’m not in an area where Lyme is common, but if I still lived in Jersey, I would vaccinate for Lyme. I don’t do Lepto as most reactions come from it and my dog does not go out and drink from puddles as he is on a leash. Plus most dogs I’ve diagnosed with Lepto have been hunting dogs.
I have 2 adult cavaliers, one has neuro issues. Both get rabies every 3 yrs. I titer and so far have never had a dog need another vaccine. I do vaccinate for lyme because NJ has become epidemic, my horse was just diagnosed with a severe case. Neither of my dogs come in contact with many other dogs except dogs I know, so they are as safe as I can make them for exposure. We do not go to dogs parks . I don’t do lepto, because I used to work in small animal medicine and the worse reactions were with this vaccine. We mostly recommended it for hunting dogs and farm dogs. some breeds get really bad reactions to it.
My younger cavalier did show, with her breeder, as a puppy, so she was vaccinated then for almost everything but lepto.
My just gone to the Bridge at 15.2 yr old cavalier was also titered her whole adult life. Gosh I miss her, its only been 2 weeks.
Adriane
The titer indicated he did not have sufficient immunity.
Rabies and definitely lepto, we live on a farm and have access to areas and wildlife that can spread this disease. Plus it is zoonotic. Thinking of adding in the flu because I foster dogs and don’t want to bring it in.
Thank you all. Parrotnutz, sorry about your loss.
Rabies (3 year)
DA2PP (3 year)
Bordatella
Lepto
and of course heartworm and tick preventatives!
Once a 3 year, always a 3 year in MA. Getting a booster because of exposure does not set it back to a 1 year vaccine
Thats not what I was told. Vet + ac told me the same thing.
Rabies laws vary a lot by state. In Maine, any dog rabies ( a different vaccine exists for cats) can be considered valide for three years, regardless of when last given. In the south, there are some states still mandating annual vaccination
But the problem with lepto is the vaccine does not cover all strains of the disease( like lymne)and its( lepto)a vaccine that can produce side effects. I live in a wetland area and the dogs have always jumped into wetland ponds and been around wildlife etc. i dont vaccinate against Lepto or lymne.
The only time the annual came up was when the dog tangles with a coyote and was bitten. I was told booster then a 1 yr then back to the 3 yr. i only know what I was told.
Definitely varies by state! In MA it definitely always stays a 3 year vaccine.
