What podcasts do you listen to when you're doing barn chores alone in the dark

I’m a fan of True Crime, but all through winter I’ve been struggling with what podcasts to listen to when I’m riding or doing chores in the dark. My barn is secluded and set back in the woods and as soon as I turn on Dateline or Crime Junkie I get so wigged out and I just have to turn it off.

True Crime is still fine in the morning, but I need something a little more lighthearted to keep me company at night.

I already listen to Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, which is probably my favorite podcast despite the lack of True Crime.

I have a couple horsey podcasts that I like: Major League Eventing, Horses in the Morning, and Retired Racehorse Radio.

Does anyone have any great podcast recommendations?

I’m a big ol’ nerd, so I tend to listen to a lot of NPR podcasts - This American Life, Hidden Brain, Fresh Air (even though Terry Gross kind of drives me crazy); Mobituaries is a fun one, and, yeah, Crime Junkie too, even though I don’t love the hosts.

I’ve really enjoyed Conan’s podcast too.

“How I Built This”. Interviews with entrepreneurs and creators of big businesses; fascinating stories about starting from the ground and working their way up. The Spanx lady is hilarious and the Dyson vacuum guy’s story was very compelling.

“Criminal” with Phoebe Judge. People will do anything. Not all “who done it” but stories of and by people who have committed or been on the receiving end of various criminal acts kind of telling their stories. A recent one called “Tell Christie I love her” is astonishing.

“30 for 30” which is a beautifully produced podcast about sports and sports figures, and not all run-of-the-mill football, basketball and baseball topics. There are some wonderfully off-beat and hard to believe stories.

“Kind World” If you want short stories about people who have done incredibly kind things for each other, which will make you feel like the world is a wonderful place to live.

and then there are the “Serial” podcasts. If you have not listened to the 12 ( or more?) part series called “S-town”, there is an experience waiting for you.

happy mucking and listening!!

I’ll second Serial and S-Town.

Behind the Bastards - fairly self-explanatory  Dives into historical and more current bad guys.

- the host of BtB also wrote a 10-episode podcast exploring the possibility of a civil war in the US, called It Could Happen Here
  • same host plus a couple more have a podcast called Worst Year Ever, which covers politics leading up to the 2020 US election (episodes on each candidate and his/her platform, conventions, etc). I’m not even American and this is interesting

Crimetown - deals with crime and corruption in a different city each season. Season 1 was about the former mayor of Providence, RI and was interesting.

The Dream - about MLMs and how they target vulnerable (mainly) women, and why they suck.

Sleepwalkers - explores artificial intelligence

My daughter and her friends have a podcast that is doing extremely well that I love to listen to called Amateur Hour.

Try Killer Queens and Morbid. They are true crime podcasts but they’re set up like you’re conversing with friends, but just an FYI: language alert LOL I could care less but I know some people mind “foul” language.

I also listen to a lot of NPR podcasts - The Moth, TED Talks, Snap Judgement, This American Life, Car Talk, Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me, etc.

But I’m going to give some of the ones suggested here a try!

Equiratings

CBC has some really awesome podcasts, just search CBC

Currently I’ve been listening to one called Boomtown which is about the oil industry in West Texas. Interesting to me since Im living in that area right now, but I think it’s super educational no matter what. Ive learned a lot.

I’ve also been listening to Ronan Farrow’s podcast To Catch and Kill. It’s his podcast about his book covering his investigation of Weinstein. Super interesting - new episodes once a week. It listens kind of like a conversational book on tape.

Root of Evil is always a fave of mine, about the Black Dahlia murder!

My all time favorite tho is The Well, not a murder pod cast but just two guys going over things that inspire creativity, they interview some bigger actors/directors/writers/inventors that have come up with some great stuff. They are my go go when driving tractor:D

I could never listen to podcasts while I was doing barn chores alone in the dark. I need to be able to hear when [insert scary monster of your choice] tries to sneak up on me.

And I’m only kind of joking.

I usually listen while driving, not while doing chores, but having discovered podcasts, what a treasure they are!

Radiolab is my very favorite. I also like Planet Money.

Because of Horses is one I found recently, and is quite good.

I work in computers, and have been enjoying Darknet Diaries, which are I think fairly accessible even to the non-technical.

I’ll second SolarFlare’s recommendation of Behind the bastards

Oh No Ross & Carrie - they try out and report on fringe science, spirituality and claims of the paranormal
Friendly atheist podcast - news podcast paying strong attention to church/state separation & feminist issues
Sawbones - medical podcast primarily historical but the do some modern issues the Dr on it research’s topics ahead to make sure to be factual
Risk - true story podcast
Beautiful Anonymous - call in show where the host speaks for a hour to a anonymous person about anything

I have found so many podcasts from posts like these I just need more time

I listen to Ear Biscuits (Rhett and Link from Good Mythical Morning on Youtube) they are two life long best friends and they have some funny conversations. Their earlier episodes are interviews with other youtubers (which are not nearly as entertaining.)
Fifth and Ludlow is a short one only 5 episodes but it was interesting. People researching a letter found under a bath tub when they remodeled their bathroom.
I like the crime ones too, Crime Junkie, and Serial.
Just finished Man in the Window and just started Chasing Cosby. Also Counter Clock and Out of the Shadows (Watch the Keepers on Netflix first for this one.

If you like true crime but want a little comedy thrown in, Wine and Crime, My Favorite Murder, and Last Podcast on the Left are interesting. How I built this, The Daily by NYT, and the Sporkful are also some of a my favorites. If you like interviews/ conversational podcasts the Joe Rogan experience is okay, depending on who’s joining him that day.

I like lots of murder ones, but if you want lighter material… I like American Scandal (different episodes on scandals that have happened - Iran Contra, Exxon Valdez, Enron, Valerie Plame, etc) and Reveal (different investigative journalism pieces - kind of 60 Minutes-ish). Ungeniused also does short episodes (10-20 mins) on just… random different things? The history of bananas, National Geographic, rainbows, Winchester Mystery House). I love the random trivia pieces I pick up on that one.

So man good podcasts already listed. I’m a true crime nut too, and sometimes being along in a dark barn just is not the right time to learn about the inner workings of Ted Bundy’s mind LOL. When I need a break from true crime I usually turn to:

Business wars (wondery) is fun and educational about feuds between competing businesses (Mars v Hershey, Macys V Gimbals etc) its told in a charming story-like manner and the episodes run about 25 min each

Every Little Thing - similar to Ungeniused, Its a call-based show that answers general questions like “who made the cha-cha slide” “who made cheese?” some a pretty fun and enlightening trivia.

Masters of Scale - interviews with business leaders on how they built their successful businesses

You Must Remember this - old golden age of hollywood tales

Throwing Shade – popculture

I also have a few reality TV based ones that I follow depending on the show they are recapping.
