what to wear to wegs

Going to eventing cross country - know what to wear to that!
Going to dressage freestyle finale - what should I wear to that?

I just heard that there is a “Best Dressed Fillies” contest on Thursday, Sept. 30 5-7 pm, judged by Carson Kressley and Ms. Kentucky - might be fun. What to wear?

I’m stunned that you think it worth mentioning.

I clicked on this because I had been wondering what to wear, too, and hoping for advice from locals or experienced KHP-goers… But mine was more along the lines of what weather to expect, how buggy will it be, etc, not whether I should bring my evening-wear!

Weather here is a toss up. Right now we have temps in the low to mid 90’s  but this weekend a cold front is coming through with some scattered showers. Looks like next week temps are in the mid to high 70’s and some low 80’s. Early in the morning and into the evening it is chilly here though.

We haven’t had good rain since the end of july…so you know when we have all these visitors here it will begin to rain

I wanted to start this thread, but was too afraid I’d only get responses like Equibrit’s!

I am going to the same events as you, mimiwenk, and was wondering if you were expected to dress up for the dressage, and what would be the best footwear for walking cross country–like sneakers vs. wellies…?

I’m going to the dressage freestyle with some friends, so looked up the dress suggestions in the 25 page spectator manual online. Per them - dress appropriately for being outside all day, wear comfortable shoes, be prepared for rain. So, I’m ditching the ‘evening wear’ for comfy shoes and jeans. Since we can’t leave the park once we get in, it was either dress for the entire day or carry clothes and find someplace to change.

Comfortable it is

My goodness, Equibrit! That is why I seldom post here. Some people are so rude.:frowning: Of course, I’m not thinking of wearing “evening wear”.
I meant more along the lines of “are jeans appropriate for the dressage freestyle finale?”

Don’t feel bad! It’s a good question!

I think jeans should be fine (and also what I’m planning to wear to the freestyle, BTW ). When I go for Rolex, everyone is usually in jeans, boots/wellies/Dubbary’s, and either a t-shirt/long sleeves/jacket depending on the weather. And if you don’t pack it, you can buy it…as a necessity, of course.

Caitlin

Jeans will be fine.

I am both a volunteer and will be going as a spectator. I will be either wearing sneakers or my clogs on most days…both sprayed with a water proofer. If there is a chance of rain then I will be rocking my brand new Huntress wellies  Bought for my birthday next month…but got them early b/c of WEG

There will be a lot of walking because A) the park is huge and B) there are distances between where the show is held to the touristy things…that look very interesting by the way. The first day the competitors arrived, I walked with the rider from Luxembourg and he said wow you all have a lot of room here and lots of stalls. I told him in the summer each week we have about 2,000 horses here for shows, that shocked him

Comfortable jeans and tennis shoes or LL Bean duck shoes early when wet ~

Last year, Arab Sport Horse Nationals had rain EVERYDAY for an eight day show in Sept. 11 inches of rain fell in those 8 days.

Oh please Mother Nature, I know you find it humorous to dump gallons and gallons of rain on Lexington every fall but if you could find it in your heart to just not rain much, all of equestrianism would bow down to you for eternety!!

I think if you have to ask what to wear, then you won’t be in the seats with the high falootin’ folks so casual and comfy is just fine. I personally would attend WEG if it meant partial nudity and a dunce hat, I’m so excited!!

Forecast now for next Wed/Thurs highs in low 70’s, lows in high 40’s.

What is 70’s in Celsius ??? I was wondering about the weather, as I am coming from Germany. No idea what to take. bnut I guess I will do the “onion-look” Lots of layers that can be taken on and of…

A quick and dirty method to get a rough conversion in midrange temps is to take the F temp, subtract 30, and divide by 2. So you get 70 F=20 C (which is pretty close to the “real” answer, which is 21 C).

This is for those who either can’t remember the conversion formula (I always have to try both 5/9 and 9/5 before I remember which goes with which direction), or can’t multiply by 5/9 in their head!

for cross country day bring a pair of comfortable shoes that don’t absorb water easily in case it rains, a T shirt, a pair of jeans of light pants you can roll up into shorts, and a light jacket.

It will be cool in the morning then hot later in the day and if it rains when you’re out on XC you’re out of luck so bring a small umbrella or poncho. I’d bring a fanny pack or small light backpack for water and storing your jacket. Bring something to put on the grass to sit on in case the grass is damp, some people bring chairs but I don’t like carrying one around.

Umbrellas are forbidden.

How about bugs? Most of our biting things are dead here in NH and I haven’t needed bug spray in a month or more; should I be pulling out the ol’ Off again for KY?

YES

A sheet of bounce in your shoes helps ~ YES some “OFF” towelettes might be worth lots of $$$ there ~

yes, I notices that umbrellas are not allowed. Seems a little dumb. I would think that at this level of competition, horses have seen umbrellas before!

I did find some of the restrictions a little over the top. I want to sport a back pack but not sure if it will fall in the acceptable size limitations. Plus, we are coming with an RV so thought I could pack some snacks in my pack to get me through the munchies. But they might be frisking you for that too!

As excited as I am about being there for this event, I’m a little worried about how many nickels and dimes I will have to spend once I’m there.
