What's in a name?

My Cactuskate label was given to me by my very “bestest” friend when I left Oregon and first moved to the desert.

She was then fondly labeled Joan of the Coast as she lived at the Oregon coast with a lovely view of the ocean. She then sold that house and moved to bay front property and now is as fondly referred to as Joan of the Mud Flats.

How did you get your “handle”?

A book that was given to me (and I recommend it to parents who are “new” to the sport)
“The Goodmudder’s Guide to (Horses)”
How to be a good parent at shows, explains all the basics.

I choose ImaDun because I own a dun colored Quarter horse, and I just HAD to make fun of all the Ima Heza and Sheza names out there. Therefore… the name ImaDun.

I had a wonderful list of potential names for our soon to be foal, all checked out with the Jockey Club and available. The night before our colt was born my son came up with Everythingbutwings and that was that.

I stole it from Wings to use on his behalf!

simple I have a dream of owning a black Mustang convertible a vintage of course and getting a vanity plate “wohrsy” now don’t anyone steal my idea, I still have time!!

well, I event two of 'em -ponies- and once I was on a shuttle bus with a whole gaggle of lesbian feminists on the way to a music festival, and I heard one woman say to another, “that’s ‘girl’. As in G Y R R L” Which still just makes me laugh, somehow.

My first pony was named Mrs. Murphy. She was a bay Connemara, hence the Irish name.

Duffy was the name of our first family dog. He was the sweetest mutt - resembled a mix of black lab and cocker spaniel, I guess. When he ran out of “babies” to watch over at our house, he was known to go across the street to help babysit the family there. He also loved other animals, of any kind.

Duffy was also the name of the first absolutely beautiful horse that I rode. He was a strip horse, to be sure, and moved the best. Too bad he hated to jump anything higher than 2’6". On the other hand, I guess I never would have met him had he liked jumping the big stuff, because then he wouldn’t have been donated to the school that my camp’s horses came from!

Goodmudder- I love that book!!! I always wondered if that was where you got your screen name.

To be honest, I’m not really sure where Palisades came from. I had to create my “dream horse” for a game once, and I named her that because it made me think of a little pacific island. Later on, I found out that it’s really a type of wooden fencing! By now, I’m pretty attached to it…next mare I own get’s that as her show name.

Let’s see, sassyjumper. . .I’m not sure if Duffy or Mrs. Tabby (our first cat, duh) came first. . .I was VERY young at the time of both adoptions and haven’t felt the need, until right now, to ask an older sibling who came first, . . .Either Duffy Owen or Mrs. Tabby Owen. . .LOL - Not sure I like the sounds of either of them, but I’m sure THAT has something to do with the amount of merlot I’ve consumed this evening!!!

My horse is a red roan - pink to those who don’t know horse colors (like the person who called to say there was a pink horse out of it’s pasture). Thus - pinkhorse

Our Pony is a grey … need I say more???

My handle is easy…it’s my horse’s show name. (Or will be)

Goodmudder- who wrote it and where can I find it? I’ve ridden for years but my parents have managed to (mostly) avoid alot of the horse culture and this book sounds like something they might appreciate…so any info would be great!

Kryswyn is the name of my farm, and the prefix I use for showing my Jack Russell terriers. The name came from a young friend who suggested we get a farm in Virginia and call it after ourselves (she put herself first LOL) Kris-Wen. I suggested we change the vowels to y’s so it would look Welsh, since I was planning to breed ponies. Hence Kryswyn. Though I have taken to pronouncing it ‘CHRIS-win’ rather than ‘Chris-when’. I loooove the way it gets butchered at terrier trials by announcers who don’t know me! Luckily when my puppy won a big class at our National trial this past weekend, the announcer was familiar with my kennel name.

When I officially became a stepmother, I told my stepdaughter that I was indeed going to be a wicked stepmother, and I took my job description seriously. So, she nicknamed me “Wicky” and calls me that in public - her friends think it is great, and I call it a tribute to our relationship.

I get my name twice from the same place … huh??

  1. I grew up riding at a barn called “New Canaan Mounted Troop”, or “Troop” and all the kids that rode there were called “Troopers”.

  2. My most favorite pet of all time was a huge orange tabby we got from one of the barn cat’s litters at Troop, so we called him Trooper. We had him for 14 years.

So I’m named for the barn and for the cat that came from the barn!

“When I grow up, I’m getting back into horses again.” And so I did, in order:

  1. Mystique - huge, monster mare that no one loved but me, now retired sound at the tender age of 12 to have babies up in the Great White North

  2. Archie - plane jane name for very fancy cool Hann. gelding who thinks he’s a dog, show name is Argentarius (FYI: for all you Canadians, I stayed loyal to country and came home to find him).

  3. Ziggy - thought I was being original when naming my grey DWB gelding only to discover when I picked up his nameplate, it was one of three “Ziggy’s” being made that week.

P.S. I would have used Ziggy’s show name - “Demetrius” - but somehow I didn’t think too many people would chat online with a “MAD”.
