What's the best vacuum cleaner?

Living in a folliclely-challenged household of 5 and up to 12 dogs and 2 cats, I take my vacuums seriously. Which ones do you find work the best on assorted animal hair, grit, etc.? I currently have 3 Oreck uprights–one on each floor, and the Oreck Mini, also 1 one each floor. I like the lightness of them, but am wondering what else is out there…

Does anyone else FREAK :eek::mad::mad: when the darn thing quits?? Has anyone else been embeeerassed to take their stinky gritsucker to be repaired?

Consider whole house vacuum.
Cost installed about what a medium quality one cost, no more bags to empty, just the canister bottom every few months for the heavier stuff, the rest is vented outside every time you vacuum and ALL is picked up, nothing left behind.

All you have is a long hose that plugs in the few wall vacuum sockets.
Can be retrofitted in most any old house.
Ask electrical companies if they install them and how much for your house.

I’ve got a Dyson and love it. It really beats my Electrolux hands down in the challenge of the animal fur!

I recently bought the Bissel Pet Vaccum and LOVE IT! I only have two dogs and a cat. My carpet looks like new after everytime I vaccum.

Husband just picked up the Dyson Animal (like DC23 or DC28, I think) AirMuscle. That is a sweet vacuum. We just got it yesterday so last night we spent 15 minutes doing the living room. We’re in love, we actually fought over the vacuuming last night. It’s disgusting how much crap it picked up - and we vacuum weekly. Actually we only managed to clean a 4’ square section and needed to dump the canister already. New house + 3 cats and 1 dog = we clean frequently.

I just bought a shark navigator lift - away. A lot less than the dyson, and in the 6 months I’ve had it I’m still very, very happy with it. I have 2 sheltie dogs, 4 parakeets, 1 lovebird, and a english lop bunny. So lots of hair and feathers around here !

Dyson. I clip my Standard Poodles and vacuum up the mess (what I cannot get in a dust pan), it is awesome. Gross to see how much dirt it gets.

Dyson!

We got a Dyson (not the Animal, but similiar version, with yellow ball) for less than half retail price by watching for specials on Woot.com. Made a HUGE difference both on our concrete floors and on the rugs.
Could not live without it at this point!

Another vote for the Dyson. I have the original one and it gets the dog and human hair up great. My old vacuum died and it didnt do a great job anyway. I was shocked at how well the Dyson got up the dog hair. I also bought the mini turbine attachment on ebay to do the stairs. Totally worth the extra money for the attachment.

I don’t have one yet, but several of my friends with pooches have Dysons and love them.

Dyson Animal. Hands down the best vacumn we have owned. Amazing how much junk it sucks up. (or distressing. . . :D)

We have the Dyson Animal vacuum (the big one, not the one with the ball). I’m not in love with it, but it does a better job on carpet than our Consumer Reports top-rated model from Sears ever did.

The whole-house vacuum venting to the outside is very intriguing though. DH has bad allergies and it’d be nice to limit the amount of nasty floating through the air in the house …

Our house came with a central vac. It never worked very well, and my husband finally prevailed, and we bought the Dyson. So really cannot recommend the central vac.

We desperately need a new vacuum as well! I keep telling hubby we need a Dyson, but he wants a canister vacuum. We were going to go with an electrolux, but the one we would want is like $500 lol so needless to say it has not been purchased yet. I’m sure I’ll be disgusted once we get a new one. We vacuum once a week, but with a corgi and now a lab we literally have to empty the canister out twice while vacuuming the house so I’m sure when we get new one it’s gonna suck up all that stuff that’s been getting left behind… yuck!

Another vote for the Dyson… you could knit a couple more cats with the amount of fur that thing picks up…

Another vote for Dyson

Daughter bought one for her little house with three kitties and a Malamute and Pegasusmom is right - this Dyson picked up a horrendous amount of stuff - grossed her out. I need to get one myself.

I have a Dyson Animal - had it for 5 years +. Last summer I decided to get a second vaccuum b/c I was getting tired of lugging it up and down the stairs. When I took the Dyson in for a repair - they lent me a “Riccar”. When I returned it, I bought my own and it has quickly become my favorite vacuum ever - the Dyson is my upstairs vacuum now. It does take bags - the only con I have with it though. Riccar is made in America too!
I have one of those Bissel Pet things at my cottage- piece of crap and the dirt bin leaks all over when you remove it to empty - you need a another vacuum to clean up after the Bissel.

P.S - I have Golden Retriever and a Shep mix - so hair all over all the time!

We have a Shark Navigator. Love it. And if you need more than one it is reasonably priced with a seven year warranty.

Dyson has been a revelation. I thought my floors were clean before, not even close compared to the results we get from the Dyson.

Another vote for Shark Navigator! We have 4 cats, 1 big dog, 1 6yo little boy, and my husband. lol I’ve never had a vacuum pick up like this thing does!
