Where are we to discuss *ok, below expectations* performance of US eventing?

This is a really terrible showing. Ex. Phillip. Disappointing. Feel for all involved. What do you think separates us from the very consistent performing nations?

No horse “culture”. The Japanese are much more impressive. They had to move to Europe and submerge themselves in it’s horse scene.

They’ve had three eliminations. Is that impressive?

and poor Canada . . . wow.

Abysmal? Seriously?

Why don’t we dispense with the hand wringing until we are done cheering for them tomorrow? Just for fun, ya know.

Except we all need to buy Sinead Halpin a drink.

Actually I think the selection commitee owes Sinead a drink…

I think they were impressive - yes.

I thought we should buy the drink because we can’t count on the selectors to do so.

Can we set up a “Sinead’s bar tab” on ChipIn? I’ll throw in the first $5

I’d chip in on that drink. But I’m still cheering for the team! And (((hugs))) to Canada and the Japanese.

Disappointing? yes. Abysmal? I don’t think so. We had some disappointing dressage scores that didn’t leave any room for error on XC. 3 out of our 5 riders jumped clear XC, and the other two only picked up 1 refusal each. Yes, we definitely could have, and should have, done better. I’m absolutely disappointed at where we stand in team placings. But I’m not embarrassed about the performance. On XC, I think the US showed they can get it done, even if their dressage scores knocked them out of medal contention.

Yes pretty dark day for us Canadians…not to say that Jessie was not amazing with Tucker out there!!!

Seriously??? It is NOT an abysmal performance. It is just that the other countries were outstanding. Our dressage could have scored better (and Boyd was certainly robbed a few points) but NONE of the tests were bad…just the competition is that much better. XC had good trips. Considering the carnage out there…all riders finished and Tiana rode her a$$ off to get that horse home and close to the time. He looked better by the end of the course.

So we were not competitive…yes we should be…but it was not an abysmal performance either.

Now my opinion my change tomorrow…because the competition is not over…

And have to say how proud I am to know that Exponential is an OTTB who raced locally (I keep trying to remember seeing his name in the entries but can’t quite get there! ) - friend of mine trained his half brother and am sure another friend of mine knew him. OTTBs are da bomb!

THIS.

Well, the US had three riders get around today with no jumping penalties. Tina had a refusal but only five TP which is rather amazing. Will had one refusal. I would hardly call that abysmal considering how many crashed and burned today.

Had the US had better dressage scores, and this is an ongoing area for concern if we are to compete for a medal, we would be in a better position. When you have a 10+ point lead in dressage per rider, you can swallow the time points.

It is not our XC that is the problem. Boyd had the unenviable position of going early and could have probably saved some TP had he had a chance to watch more rounds.

I also don’t see how Sinead could have been the savior today but that’s my opinion. SJ is yet to come. Why not wait until then to start complaining.

I agree that this was a poor showing for the US. The entire team from GB finished above all of our riders with the exception of Philip and MW, and we really don’t have anyone that’s in contantion for an individual medal unless something crazy happens. That is just sad. Especially considering that we are a huge country with so much potantial talent to draw from. Also don’t see how anyone can think Sinead and Tate wouldn’t have delivered a better performance XC…have they ever had a jumping penalty XC? In my opinion Will Faudree and Andromaque would also have been a better addition to the team. Hopefully this year is a big wake up call to the selectors.

If the U.S. was “abysmal” what adjectives are left for Canada and Japan?

The U.S. was workmanlike which only wins medals when it’s a carnage for everyone else. Which sometimes happens, but not today.

I don’t think she would necessarily have been ‘the savior’, but I have more confidence in her ability to get around XC without a stop.

Agree w/ the ‘not abysmal’ comment, also.
