Where to find a saddlebred broodmare

I am starting to search for a nice saddlebred broodmare. I’m looking for an ASB type, not the super swan neck, bulging eye, big lick type. I know they can be found, I just have no idea where to look! I’m in the SE, so would prefer something within a day’s drive.

Any thoughts?

Network through here:

ASB for sale: https://www.facebook.com/groups/316396318382309/

There are also several public auctions each year in KY/MO/TN but since Tattersalls closed I’m out of touch with those.

I’d also contact http://www.saddlebredrescue.com/

They often stumble upon some really good horses that have been passed down and are now in low end auctions etc with papers in hand or reg name known and papers track able.

FYI “big lick” is a Walking Horse term, not a term we use in the Saddlebred world.

The American Saddlebred Horse Association has a program called Mare Harmony that helps people who have mares they are willing to broodmare lease find people looking to lease them http://www.saddlebred.com/asha/mareharmony.php On the ASHA website they also have a directory of stables.

Robertson Equine Sales has live auctions twice a year. The next one is April 7. http://www.robertsonequinesales.com/

Southern Saddlebred Sales has online auctions in conjunction with Addis Auctions. The next one is Feb. 25 http://www.southernsaddlebredsales.com/

Also watch the Addis Auctions site. They mainly sell Arabians, but some Arabian breeders will have Saddlebred broodmares they have been using to breed Half-Arabians that they may be selling http://addisliveonlineauctions.com/

There are several Facebook groups with Saddlebreds for sale. For broodmares I would look at https://www.facebook.com/groups/345077755590074/
https://www.facebook.com/groups/376740322356732/

Sorry about the “big lick” comment, I’m not in the saddlebred (or Walking Horse) world. I’m looking for a nice saddlebred mare to breed to warmbloods. I’ve seen the cross be VERY successful with high quality foals produced.

No problem, just clueing you in on the lingo, if you use that term when contacting a Saddlebred breeder or trainer you will probably get the whatever lady eye roll response :o

But yeah, here are a couple directories http://www.saddlebred.com/breed/stables.php http://www.saddlehorsereport.com/hotline.aspx?cid=20 shoot off and e-mail or pick up the phone and see what people have. Can’t hurt to ask. Tell them you want something bigger boned, a lower set neck is okay but you want a good laid back shoulder, wide chest, straight back, a “working” croup is fine (as apposed to a level croup), and it doesn’t need to have a lot of motion up front, but a horse that reaches well from behind is good- or whatever your criteria is. Focus on what you want!

Also take a look here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/376740322356732/
and join this group https://www.facebook.com/groups/337828379598935/ as there often are some nice horses down on their luck. Also, there currently is a very well bred mare in need of a new home, listed on there from a private party, must be a good home, but her bloodlines are excellent. Edited to add, the owner of 2 mares that need to be rehomed also listed them on this page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/133128940145698/
The bay more looks more substantial, possibly more what you are looking for. Owner apparently has fallen on hard times.

The SBR contract no longer permits breeding

Thank you all for the links, I’ve joined the fb pages, and will keep looking until I find the right match. I’m really looking for that right mare, sporty type, but also big (over 16.2), so I’m sure it will take me some time to find the right girl. But I know she’s out there!

Here is another group that’s working on promoting the ASB and the founders of the group are interested in including non-traditional uses of the breed.

Pm me your info. If you aren’t looking for a saddleseat type but more the sport. I know quite a few breeders who consider those rejects, and even know a very large breeder in GA that might have some mares that fgit the bill.

Here’s a thought…this is supposed to be a sport horse breeding forum , not a where can I find a Saddlebred mare forum. No wonder most of the sporthorse peeps are gone off of here. Not trying to be rude…just sayin…

That was a bit snarky. ASB when from the right lines and crossed right make amazing jumpers and dressage horses.

Uhhhh, here’s a thought: since when can’t Saddlebreds be sporthorses? And didn’t the OP say she was looking to use the broodmare for sporthorse breeding?

Not trying to be rude, but you appear to be missing a lot of details.

This farm bred a Saddlebred mare to Totilas. (Scroll down to the pinto mare.) http://www.lesbeauxchevaux.net/mares.html

Of course this doesn’t help answer the question “where to find a saddlebred broodmare”, but I thought Saddlebred breeders might find it interesting

I’m sure there is a girl out there for you, and I hope you find her pretty easily. It makes me excited each time I hear anyone in the sporthorse realm talk favorably of ASBs, because they can be fantastic, and ammy-friendly, sporthorses when coming from the right bloodlines!

I will say that you’re searching for a bit of a rare beast. If anyone else has had a different experience then feel free to correct me, but the vast majority of ASBs from what I have seen in my 8+ years of being around the breed are 15.2h – 16h. There are certainly ones that are larger, but I’m going to venture a guess that maybe 15% of the ASBs out there are 16.2h or larger. Then widdle that down because you’re looking for a mare. Then widdle that down because you would like sport conformation.

Be prepared to have to dig a little, but when you do find her, please post photos here! I would absolutely love to see her!

A 'buyer’s " market ``` you’ll find something very fancy for not much $ !

A 'buyer’s" market

You should be able to find a very nice mare for very little $ !

Be patient !

** many ‘snakes in the grass’ out there

and many trying to find ‘good’ homes too ! :D[/I]

Amazing jumpers ? I will eagerly await an example of an amazing jumper coming from a ASB mother.

Bayhawk – I am looking to make an ammy friendly, hard working dressage horse. I know quite a few who are performing at high levels, and the nice saddlebreds have GREAT brains and will mellow at hot WB temperment without losing the gaits or making them thick/earthbound. I think my post is well within the rules of this board, and if you don’t like this board anymore, why bother posting on my thread?

Thank you to all those who have replied with HELPFUL information.

Couture TB – I will PM you with more info when I get home! Thanks!!

More then a 1\3 of the horses competing in the upper level jumpers in Mexico are half saddlebreds. I will see if the owner of the stable that has bred them has any video or photos.

I have also competed saddlebreds that were more old style, in the 3’9 jumpers and up to 4th level dressage.

OP. Size over 16h will be the problem, BUT with the older lines and bigger boned ones, when you cross them to a stallion with size you usually get larger then the mare.
