Where would you look for dressage horses for sale?

This may have been discussed before, but I’m gearing up to be needing classifieds sites and I was curious where dressage riders went to find horses for sale, specifically FEI horses. I’m guessing quite a few are sold word of mouth, but other than that where would you look?

Of course there are the standard sites

dreamhorse.com
equine.com
warmbloods-for-sale.com

but others? any specific facebook pages?

Thanks!

That Facebook page, as well as HorsesDaily.com. I don’t use the standard sites much.

I second Dressage Horses for Sale - Weanlings to GP and HorsesDaily.com.
I would also recommend DressageStar.com , and PremierSportHorse.com

The Facebook page mentioned, HorsesDaily http://horsesdaily.com/horse-listings-all and individual websites of well-regarded trainers / breeders/ sellers

I have had great luck buying through Amy, and have sent several friends there as well.

I’d start with top U.S. breeders. DG Bar Ranch, Hilltop Farm, etc.

So much depends on where you are and what your budget is! And what you are looking for - young horse (FEI candidate), under saddle, PSG, GP? Warmblood? Where are you located, and are you willing to travel? BTW, I don’t know anyone who has ever bought a dressage horse off dreamhorse - I think most of those horses are more pleasure types, or “all rounders”.

I think I would plan on spending some weekends at shows in FL. There will be many horses there for sale, and you can also make contact with various trainers who may have other sale horses in their strings that are not showing.

Breeders are not usually likely to have FEI horses for sale, unless they also have a strong competition operation going on, and their own “in house” FEI rider. In general, that would usually be the larger operations like Hilltop, DG Bar, Iron Spring, etc.

If looking to import, I second Stafford Barton Stud. My trainer has been referring folks there for a couple of years. We also have contacts at various places in Germany - including places that supply some of the Stafford Barton horses. SBS tends to specialize in young horses, though, so is not likely to have FEI level horses.

In addition to our German contacts, we have some contacts in FL that have various FEI level horses for sale - some are fancier than others, but they are all sound, have good minds and rideability, and are reasonably priced.

I would stay away from Stafford Barton Stud. The horses are not necessarily what they seem and you cannot try them, only buy on video.

I have heard of surprisingly many FEI horses for sale by word of mouth. I might contact COTH member Tasker (Ellie Rawle) or her Mom Anne at Watermark Farm, or the other places mentioned.

Incidentally, I searched most of the pages mentioned while looking for/at young horses before buying my mare, and from watching videos picked certain stallions I especially liked. I then looked for offspring of those stallions. My mare is by my favorite of those stallions, and I purchased her from her breeder. Stallion owners often have an idea of offspring of their horses for sale.

MatchNRide.com has a lot of nice dressage horses for sale.

Don’t forget to check bulletin boards at tack and feed stores. Shows also usually have boards up somewhere on the grounds. It’s a great way to find local horses. I’ve found the best horses by spreading the word of what I was looking for and it’s amazing how many horses can appear out of thin air  When possible I like to buy from people I know just so I have a better idea of the horses history.

Another good FB: Hanoverian Horses for Sale

If you are looking for a horse to import from Europe I would try these websites, both myself and a barn mate used these to find our recent imports.

A lot of advertising is being done via Facebook these days. It’s a good way to find sale barns and breeders and even if you’re not interested in that specific horse in the ad. There is typically a link to a home page where you will find a horse that is more up your alley. As a breeder I have multiple horses for sale and can’t possibly list all those horses on paid web ads all the time.

I have just created a new horse sales page. We are doing things differently. We offer low monthly subscriptions (you can upgrade/downgrade/cancel anytime). And, you can list your horse or horses and we market throughout the internet for you. So you just sit back and reply to any inquiries! We have a HUGE network on Facebook, Online, Offline, friends etc. We will get your horse in front of the right people.

And, if you are a buyer you can also enter your criteria and be notified whenever the site has a listing that matches!

Check out the site at https://www.gohorseshop.com We are continually making improvements and we just recently released our beta mobile app for Android & iOS!

I second or third the Facebook group Dressage Horses For Sale - Weanlings Through GP.

I go to that page to drool over the amazing horses for sale!
