This is not an ISO ad, but I’m currently looking for recommendations on where to go to find a youngish (3 to 5) OTTB that is lightly reschooled. I’ve done some searches here, but often the recommended sellers have defunct links on FB or just discontinued websites. Within a reasonable drive from middle TN would be great. I am looking for a sane, sound TB gelding. It doesn’t have to have a lot of reschooling, but I do want one that has been ridden off the track by someone who can assess him better than I can. TIA.
Why not go shop at the Makeover? You can try several and they have on site vets for prepurchase exams with Hagyard Equine.

I bought mine from them a few years ago. Nice people and they seem to pick good eggs.
Thanks, all. I go to the makeover every year, but honestly most are listed over 10,000 and that is why I am looking for one with less schooling so that I can save some of that money.
I will check the other suggestions for sure.
Part of me loves that the TB prices are going up because of the Makeover and other TB Aftercare programs. The part of me that has been shopping for my daughter is not a fan. ☺ï¸
Haha…I agree Limerick2017. I read on the RRP site, though, that the average price paid for the Makeover entrants was around 1800 I think. I don’t recall if that was 2017 or 2018. So there are some out there. :). And I know I will be paying more than that, and I’m okay with that.
THR Thoroughbreds (https://www.thrthoroughbreds.org/) is located in Tennessee, unsure if they have anything available at the moment that meets your criteria.
Second Chance TBs is also in TN: http://secondchancethoroughbreds.com/
Devanna farms (https://www.facebook.com/devannafarms/) specializes in repurposing OTTBs. They are a family owned but located in north TX.
Makers Mark Secretariat Center & New Vocations are some in Lexington, KY.
Have you checked out Canter Horses https://canterusa.org/horses/ and Second Stride http://secondstride.org/index.html?
And of course the Facebook groups as well: https://www.facebook.com/groups/651825954937945/
There are many!
I’ll add Amy Paulus: https://www.changingsaddles.com/
I have worked with her directly, but she has a good reputation and isn’t terribly far from TN.
Thanks, all.
Second on Amy Paulus! She has her closed FB group but she also has a public FB page called Changing Saddles LLC
CANTER Mid Atlantic used to do a good job getting them started after racing. (Ally? I think was the name of one of the riders that was fantastic about exposing them to all sorts of stuff, and starting them over fences).
They’re back to just doing listings now (and WV/Maryland/DE are now individual chapters).
Jess at Benchmark Sporthorses did a lot of work with the CANTER mid-atlantic horses, and after having been involved in that program she’d be my first stop if I was shopping (well, if I didn’t go back to old connections at the track first). She’s very good at evaluating them and getting them good, positive, rides and experiences. I would absolutely trust her to “find” me a horse if I gave her the attributes I’m looking for, and is honest about representing them.
For OP, though, the folks I know are probably too far north for a day trip.
There is an event rider in VA who does a nice job but for the life of me I can’t remember the site. She bought a few from Charles Town and re-started them really nicely - it’s a smaller operation and now it’s going to drive me nuts trying to remember it. As soon as I do I’ll come back and edit this LOL
Thanks, caffeinated. If you remember the name, please let me know. That is a little closer to home.
Well I remembered and looked her up, only to find she’s moved to Vegas, LOL
boo.
Oh, geez. Yeah, Vegas is definitely too far, haha. Thanks for checking.
Jessica Redman has super nice horses.
OP, I know of a trainer that has a few OTTBs for sale in North Carolina. She isn’t an OTTB reseller but has two geldings that I believe have jumping experience and possibly schooling show miles. Both young. Pm if you want information. They are reasonably priced too.
I’d jump up on them but pretty far from me.
Shannon with Infinitysporthorses.com She has quite a few OTTB’s and they are well priced. She’s in Aiken SC
Is Mapleshade still doing ottb resales? She seemed to do a good job with them and had some nice horses.
I would not recommend Shannon at all. I own a horse she used to train. PM if you want details.
The RRP created a Buzz spotlighting the versatility of the OTTB in any discipline across the board. What it also did was High-Light the Re Sale Business as well…and like all good it brought everyone out of the wood work looking to cash in. There are a lot of quality experienced re sellers who do this fulltime, not as a hobby. They can steer you to ahorse with the right way of going and mind set for the hunters…
