Who here has removed soy from their horse's diet?

If you are adding EquiPride and the hay is reasonable (not excellent) quality you REALLY don’t need anything else!!!

I do not own stock in the company either-wish I did:D

CHEERS to you Sarah Ralston-you are my new best friend!

So LMH, is that what you are feeding now - equipride and grass hay? Or do you feed some alfalfa too?

I looked at the website for the equipride. Interesting stuff. I don’t think I’ve ever seen pea meal used in equine feed before. A prebiotic I guess?

Believe it or not, pea or pea meal is more commonly used in Canada, from what I understand.

I believe it is another protein source.

The digestive element (I think)comes from the yeast from the distillers grains-but I am not totally up on all of that…maybe others can pipe in and explain.

On the site it also talks about the procedure and temps and such…I just know it works very well.

I feed that, hay, 1/2-1 cup of about 1/3 a-pellets 2/3 oats (just to mix it). I do add Magnesium (though I recently ran the numbers and don’t need it with the amount of Lix mine use) and most recently TriAmino from uckele (thank you EqTrainer).

I do have about 20 bales of Timothy/ low alfalfa hay that I mix around with straight timothy and straight orchard grass hay-so they get one flake of 20% alfalfa hay about 3 times a week.

Pastures are fescue, some bermuda, clover and weeds.

But yes, that can pretty much cover it.

Each of mine gets 3-5 oz of EP-but they have access to the Equilix…if I did not use the Lix, I would double the EP I was feeding.

Would you say the equilix is pretty palatable? I’m not asking if you’ve tried it personally, just wondering if your picky ones even use it. I’ve tried 3 different licks and pretty much gave up on them as they went unused, even by my horse who will eat anything.

The equipride looks like an interesting product. I just had my husband mill me a special soy-free mix (boy, that wasn’t easy…even the minerals I wanted to use had soy in there. Sheesh…that stuff is in everything!). So I’m going to have to use that first since he went to all the trouble to make it for me, but the equipride may be next on my list. Thanks!

I agree that some variability in the diet is necessary. Everybody I talk to is hung up on the traditional, no-change diet, and I don’t buy into that at all. My picky eater has told me in no uncertain terms that the menu must change at least every 3 months, if not more often. I don’t do drastic changes as hay/forage is always the biggest part of their diet, but I do switch it up every so often.

I think it gets a mixed review-some (like mine ) LOVED it. I know one person that put a lix out and her mare would not let any other horses near it for days!

She was like “Lix is MY MAN”!

I think Chocomare’s horses had an adjustment time…and JB also uses it-I don’t recall if Rio needed a few days? Yes, JB?

I don’t personally know of any horse that did NOT adjust very quickly (not saying it does not happen, I have only heard of horses needing less for a couple of days then getting very excited about it).

My TB, Julian is VERY picky and can nose tiny amounts of MagOx from his feed-he likes EP.

So, it may well depend.

I have tasted it. I prefer chips and cheese.

Well, tonight was the first night of my soy-free blend and wouldn’t you know it, Mr. Picky is saying no thanks. The mini and my fat boy both ate it fine. I guess I’ll be buying some more anise seed to see if I can change his mind.

I asked Mr. MO to leave the molasses out, and he told me OK but they wouldn’t eat it. Maybe I should have let him put a little bit in. Oh well. I can add some when I make the mash.

Is Equipride a substiute for a RB? Would other supplements be need such as Se if you are in a low Se area?

How long after elimination of soy before noticeable change in a horses behavior?

Yes, I know this is an 11 year old thread  But it’s a good one, so…

It’s apples and oranges, more like comparing a v/m supplement with a balancer.

Would other supplements be need such as Se if you are in a low Se area?

Selenium of 5ppm. That means 2.27mg in 1lb of the EP. If you’re force-feeding that much and that meets the Se needs, then it meets the needs. If it doesn’t, then you need to supplement, but ONLY based on blood testing.

It’s been a long time since I used this and I don’t remember the feeding rate, and can’t find it in their site, so…

Go back to single ingredients–you will have total control of what you’re feeding, and can tweak ingredients at will.

Did you eliminate only soy, or a product with many ingredients, one or two of which are soy?

Actually switched feed to one that doesn’t have any soy products in it.
