The data shows that you’re ridiculous
When I say useable I meant from where this thread started about the high price of “show” horses specifically hunters. Like you I’ve ridden since childhood. Never spent more than $1500 on a horse in my first 40 years. Took in lots of broken horses and enjoyed my own less expensive ones until they aged out or had lameness issues. I spent the better part of my 30’s with the most lovely barn at home and 4 retired/ broken horses. As I approached 40 I kept loving and caring for my herd of misfit toys and ventured out to a trainer. Took lessons then half leased a horse then full care leased a stepping down made hunter. Through those years I said goodbye to a horse or two of my own when it was time. When I was down to 2 oldie goldies and my school master hunter was ready to retire I decided to buy the horse I wanted to take into my chosen sport (hunters) ride, show and compete. So I spent the money to buy my unicorn. I got a steal of a deal for what that horse has become. Purpose bred and made even well started only horses cost $. That certainly never detracted from my care or adoration of my home herd. 2 years ago I put down my 29 year old horse who I’ve known since his birth and a 35 year old nearly toothless pony I took in as a rescue 7 years previous. Now I’m down to my one show horse.
I’d take in a old or retired horse at my home farm in a second. Just haven’t come across any. Lots of crazy sellers on Craigslist trying to pawn off broken horses for upwards of $5000. This thread has taken some interesting turns! We started talking about $100,000 horses and have come full circle to slaughter.
Interesting she brings up racehorses, there’s so many young ones bought at enormously high prices, they get $$$$$ put into them for training and so on - only to find out that they don’t like to race, or have soundness issues, or whatever. So they are then sold (or even given away) for a fraction of what’s been put into them. I guess it’s okay to lose a gigantic amount of money in horses, you just can’t make any.
I am on several local FB groups (the HORROR) where horses are advertised for sale, and here in Texas I think people are just now finding out that their safe solid trail mount is worth more now than it has ever been. They’re learning that people will pay a lot for what they’ve let hang out in the backyard for a while, and horses are coming out of the woodwork, it would seem! But I figure at some point all the buyers will have what they want, and the demand will go lower, and prices will then follow.
nobody called you a liar.
That’s just not how economics work.
Money into a horse does not equate money out.
You have to put gas in your car - doesn’t add value to your car.
So I bought this little red 09’ model Commodore ute in 2015. 15k on the odo, and $15k to buy (a dollar a click). In 2020 (and 69k) I thought about selling it, redbook value was $9k… maybe.
I sold it in Jan this year, for $16.5k and with 90k on the odo. First person to look at it came with cash and didn’t quibble. I never improved it, souped it, did nothing but maintenance on it.
What we are seeing in car prices, you are seeing in horse prices. My fancy OTTB (barrier only, never raced) with FLC, short steps, sound, handsome, reasonably uncomplicated, all laterals well established… he wouldn’t fetch $5k here. No one wants OTTBs and our horse prices haven’t really shifted. But cars…, phwar!!
Isn’t there a bingo card for these types of threads? All we need are some crayons and a blue saddle.
I did actually!
Well, actually I just said I thought the story was bs. So kinda like calling op a liar
Oh, wow! She’s beautiful
Supply and demand is also at play with horses. As you’ve been told before on this thread.
The fact that you didn’t understand it before starting this train wreck of a thread speaks volumes about your lack of experience in horses.
OP you started this thread talking about basically being priced out of top horses. I think that market mirrors houses and cars and land. Then we moved to rescues and unwanted horses and slaughter. In my opinion most people who spend money and care for a horse whether it’s free or $$$$$$$ don’t dump it at an auction to be slaughtered. Most and see I’m saying MOST people make the hard choice of either taking care of their horses or letting them go via euthanasia. What problem specifically are you trying to address because you’ve put forth a myriad of things from your first post.
Yes, she is very pretty. Not ideal in the conformation department, and a very complicated brain. But also a generally safe advanced beginner ride if you can sit a scooty/spinny spook. At 24 she doesn’t really spook anymore, though.
Except horses aren’t produced in factories that were closed because of covid, don’t take computer chips, and aren’t impacted by sanctions on hostile countries.
So…not following your logic?
And thanks again for the personal dig! I hope it makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside.
So what do you think is the solution, OP? (Or answer, to the question you posed?)
Breeding farms do share some similarities with factories, they produce marketable goods in order to make (hopefully) profits.
Horse prices are absolutely impacted by global economic forces in the same way any other product is. To think they aren’t is absurd.
Don’t want to be called a spade? Don’t act like one. Real simple
my coach has a 100k horse. She’s lovely. i have absolutely no horse-envy about that either.
So, fwiw, I think it’s entirely possible to think prices are nuts and not be jealous as someone(s) else upthread have suggested might be at issue.
huh. maybe i will sell that old jag. It sits too low to go up and down our gnarly gravel driveway…it’s useless and i have no emotional attachment to it (like i do my useless horses)
calling the story BS is different. - I think.
She’s the color of honey. What a beautiful color. and her face!!!
Pros steal cars and before you can say pass the sockets the cars are in pieces sold as parts.
(this comment in reponse to ‘entirely traceable supply chain’
Not to mention the parts sold out of the backyard, just saying, not traceable…
Sorry. Not sure what you’re talking about. Was just detailing my journey. Didn’t at any point say that involved jealousy. Just explaining MY life. Best wishes.
