why don't jockeys wear gloves?

Stupid question, but I’ve always wondered.

Personally I didnt wear gloves when I rode, except on the freezing days in N.E… it’s easier to switch sticks without gloves, at least for me, and I’m assuming for everyone else!

Any other time I always wear gloves, even when it’s 100 degrees out!

Um, some do
My main one does for sure. Personal preference I guess.

I think more do than don’t…I’ll have to pay more attention and see next time !

I see lots wearing gloves, though most of the ones I see on a regular basis are steeplechase jocks. But, I’d say atleast 90% of them wear them 100% of the time!

I guess it’s like baseball. Some wear batting gloves and some don’t.

Maybe I’m just not watching the right jockeys… I don’t remember ever seeing (m)any in gloves when I used to actually follow racing, and was just looking at the Belmont week slideshow on the Blood-Horse site and saw all those naked fingers and started wondering again. No harm, no foul, if there’s no real reason for it. Just curious.

Some do some don’t. It’s a personal preference. Some feel the riens don’t slip and they can manage a tougher horse with gloves and others think gloves get in the way.
I know I am often suprised when I see even exercise riders in a colder climate galloping without gloves… brr! AND OUCH!

(laughing) you must have met my husband, Chiniko. Up here, he’ll jog in gloves, but even the coldest Canadian mornings he’s pulling them off to gallop, and certainly the gloves come off if he’s breezing. Then again, he’s the one galloping out there in a tank top while everyone else has on a jacket  He will come back and stick his hands in hot water until he feels them again though.

HA! Sounds like someone I know! NEVER ever wore long sleeves or a coat, never wore gloves. Always had carrots in his back pockets! Good guy, bless his heart he dies earlier this year, but what a tough old guy!
Once he broke off behind a set of workers and the top layer of the track was still frozen though only enough to be bullet like when they hit horse or human. And there he was taking dirt with a tank top and a vest. Had that been me I’d be going 3 wide! I had to laugh at the sight, and still do. I’d be so numb I couldn’t feel my fingers and toes hating being out there knowing that this was gonna be uncomfortable and this guy would go by me with his bare arms. I would buck up as soon as I saw him every morning and suffer thru it!

You know, thinking about it, I rode in the mid eighties…gloves were not what they are now…I think that was before neoprene was invented!

SKI gloves???

Yes, I actually got tired of frozen fingers at one point, and put on ski gloves…heck, I couldnt feel the reins anyway…

What I do remember were baseball gloves (this was before Newmans)…and those ladies driving gloves (cant remember the name), but they didnt keep your fingers warm.

Most of the excersise boys wore two pairs of those horrid cheap brown cotton gloves…tried that once, my hands were wayyy to small…it was a disaster!

LOL! Nice.

Seems like it would be harder to flip down goggles with them?

Not that I have any experience to base that opinion on. I can only imagine the tangle that I would get into trying to flip down goggles at a gallop, with or without gloves.:lol:

Good heavens, take a cross, hold a stick and pull down goggles… oh no… I just put the goggles on at the barn… not that handy;)!!!
The SSG gloves were a welcome find when I was learning how to ride race horses. At first I didn’t have gloves and the rubbers caused a whole lot of callouses to develop, which I hated. So I found gloves. and tada… holdable hands. Just in case someone wanted to hold my hand. It is silly I know but that was how I felt back then! Ever after gloves are a must, no matter the temperature!

I galloped for years with “nails”…and I hardly ever broke one!!!

WOW!!!

The first time I had “nails,” back in high school, first day out to gallop and school over hurdles, I broke 2!! Ok, cracked, but still!! My friend that I used to ride with rode with “nails” and raced over timber and hurdles with them. She always amazed me!

I’m partial to Neumann’s or Roeckl’s, for gloves that is.

Honestly, I break more nails working around the house (laundry) than working with my horses!

I like the Neumans, but they do tend to get slippery when wet, and using shaving cream on them never really seemed to do the trick… I preferred SSG’s for galloping.

I bought a pair of Roeckl’s for showing, and I love my string gloves for schooling.

I’ve always ridden with “nails” and always ride in SSG gloves. I’ve cracked one nail in the past 3 years. I’m not sure how that’s happened because it’s definitely not skill… just dumb luck.
