Will it ever stop?

He didn’t appear sulky or sullen to me. He stopped at a fairly basic question with an upper level rider and that is a problem but then he continued. For all we know, there was some distraction beyond the jump and he simply lost focus.
Remember, this is only the 2nd time ML has competed him and it takes some time to develop that partnership. I am not surprised at a random stop given how little time they’ve had together.

Makes perfect sense to me. And I would not be surprised if this is the plan. I do NOT think that ML would be looking at Mandiba as a possible team horse. There are too many other more promising prospects for that.

She is a phenomenal rider…
I disagree, FW  I have been heartily unimpressed with her riding.

ETA: and I now take that back. She rode DF Demeter beautifully this weekend at the WEG Prep Trials.

So it looks like his stop happened at the mound fence. Hard to see exactly what happened but, here you go: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bqrTmJDvENA.
It is hard to see in the video, but he had his ears up and seemed in a good rhythm through the rest of the course.

To me, it looked like he jumped the first part of the combination, saw the second and lost confidence. It looked to me like he was backing off, edging behind the rider’s leg.

The one crack and gowl at the fence worked, but I think it also helped that the second try did not include the A element.

I am not sure this horse is suited for an ammy at training level - there is a bank with a jump on a mound that is used at Fair Hill. The bank and the mound are permanent fixtures. The course designer will occasionally put a small jump at the apex of the mound. In May, it was an ABC combination - bank, jump on mound, slight right to a narrow roundtop jump. I am not sure Mandiba would like this jump and may give a less than optimum ride to someone that needs a horse to take care of them more.

Mandiba did the coffin beautifully, it seems the “uphill” to a jump - especially as part of a combination - is what sets him off. Of course, this is just going from that one video and my own experience.

It didn’t appear that ML “overrode” him. I don’t know what the plan is for him but in the H/J world, many times trainers prep horses for clients by showing them a level above where the student is going to show. Was she prepping him for a client/YR?

As to the question related to “He’s not getting around with a top level rider, lets give him to an ammy” I don’t see it as odd. After all, the top level riders are asking “top level questions” and the ammy isn’t.
I think the better H/J world analogy would be that Mandiba is a Pro Ride. Regardless of whatever else can be said, ML and KOC are fabulous riders, but neither of them can get the horse around clean. That’s not the type of ride the average ammy would then want to take on, even at a lower level.

Been waiting I think 3 years for someone on COTH to finally bring them “out” in the open - knew you all wouldn’t let me down

I doubt that will ever change. Too much of an empire to split up.

his owner has a farm in PA to which he could retire. she has owned other horses for KOC and they have eventually retired to her farm.

Given the “relationship” between ML and KOC, what ML wants, or think she wants, ML gets.

I don’t know how many others on here are taken aback by these comments but I am and at least one other person is. This is such a personal and probably sensitive aspect of their lives and if what is insinuated is actually true, I feel badly for those who are affected by the nature of these comments.

This is another example of how a forum in which people are “anonymous” to those in the out group can become extreme and perhaps cruel.

Sorry, had to vent…

^^WD I hope you are never sorry for being the voice of reason, compassion, and class.

Jeezus, show a little class, people…

Thank you!!!

Thanks for saying that, I was going to post something similar but you said it better than I would have.

It is shameful the way some people post snide and hurtful comments.

Several years ago I was asked what I thought about this horse by a very good pro rider. I said I thought he wasn’t generous. He wouldn’t be generous enough for my sorry butt at training level and he’s not generous for a pro rider trying to push the boundaries. I really don’t understand why people would buy him and try to push in a place he doesn’t want to go. I’ve tried that with my toddler and get the same results!

I can’t speak for anyone else, but my first comment (which was a joke from a popular tv show) was in jest, and I stand by my second comment that if David and Karen broke up for WHATEVER reason, they O’Connor name and brand would stay in tact.

Also, I hope that no one is commenting in a homophobic way… I can’t say because I don’t know any of the posters personal beliefs, but I think that people would be interested the same way if it was a horse being passed on from a man to his girlfriend or visa versa. Anytime you combine a relationship with a profession things can get complicated.

I’ve had a little experience with Master Imps and I’d say they ought to xray this horse’s limbs a bit and they will find why he is stopping. Just my experience. And I don’t care how sound he is. I bet he’s got something that is the cause of the trouble. Period.

I do apologize to all for going off topic.

Deindividuation. :o. Good people succumb often.

That could be said for just being an eventer.

Wow. Winding down thanks for bringing to my attention in your post something that is none of my business. By pulling together all those comments. Really? This is of service to eventing? How?
