In my school dodgeball was incorporated into the ritualized torture of the fat/unpopular kids. This was in the 70s and early 80s when only a few kids were fat rather than most of the class, so they were real targets. Dodgeball was what we had to play when the gym teachers didn’t feel like organizing anything else, and the idea was for the athletic kids to nail the fat kids as hard as possible with the balls. Oh, the innocence of the children.

As to competition vs cooperation, it’s a gross oversimplification to say that without cutthroat competition as a child you will grow up to be a failure. Mr Hobson is the product of the postwar German school system, in which there was a strong reaction against the ills of the past, and cooperative activities were favored over competition. Competitive sports were not part of the school setting–at least in his town, they figured kids could find plenty of competitive opportunities in local sports associations, and that this did not have a place in education. I would say that he was not in the least harmed by not having the experience of whacking other children with balls and being defined as a winner or loser. He came out with a thorough knowlege of Latin, English, French, art history and world history, advanced math…now he’s very successful in his field. He swam competitively without needing the school system to provide the opportunity. He did an exchange year in an Ohio school in a very well-to-do, conservative neighborhood. He was bored to death because the students his same age were far behind his level in every subject. They could only talk about drinking and football. Please explain how that non-competitive system failed him?
