DMK stop it! The president said he wasn’t trading arms for hostages. Are you saying he lied? Are you? You are rocking my world.
Fat appy, in every other colorful political debate on this BB, our right-of-center members have passionately categorized “liberal welfare-state handouts” as evil tools of satan. Yet here you are accepting them, and Sannois didn’t get on your case for it. I was looking for an explanation. It seems like it’s OK as long as one makes the assumption that everyone else who accepts government assistance is lazy and stupid.
And my position is, so what if there are some people who make a living off welfare? Most people who use is are like you–they need some temporary help getting back on their economic feet. I really don’t care that some people are working the system with no plans to get off. The cost of supporting them is ridiculously low compared to what we pump into tax subsidies for fatcat corporations and donations to the defense industry–it’s negligible in the national budget picture. If that’s the cost of at least pretending to have a humane safety net system, then I don’t mind paying it.
How can anyone argue about giving three hundred bucks to some poor person when we give millions and billions to the likes of Ken Lay? What is Missile Defense (formerly Star Wars) but a giant handout to the defense industry pals of both democrats and republicans alike? Why is it OK to support billionaire CEOs with finance regulations that permit wholesale cheating and stealing from worker pensions, but it’s somehow a “liberal” travesty to help someone feed her kids? If we are going to reform human welfare, then I think we also need to reform corporate welfare. No more handouts to Ken Lay (the best pal of Dubya, BTW) and his ilk!
