Thanks!
Was he as mousy/gray looking in real life, as he is in his 3 day old pics? If so, then black.
the first foal shed, especially when it’s later in the Summer, is almost useless for real color, as it practically bleaches as soon as it comes in.
His baby pics say black to me. My black colt was that greyish black color when he was born. Some of the blacks sunburn so much that they look almost like buckskins by end of summer. When they shed out they’ll look black again, till the sun bleaches their coats again.
I agree with JB. If he really is that gray, black. My black girl was a sliver gray like that.
My wolkentanz 1 boy that I have had since a yearling started out that mousey grey color and turned out black though his dam was grey so for a while even the breeder was not sure.
I had an Irish draught/Connemara x come out that mousey grey colour… Thought he was going to be black. He ended up dark brown.
I think if muzzle is brown- not going to be black.
Pictures are accurate for baby colors, the mousy grey color…It doesn’t matter either way, just curious. Would love it if he could just shed out all the way for his inspection next month whatever the color! Haha
He’ll probably be all but fully shed in a month (assuming by “next month” you mean 3-4 weeks out, not next week ) but still won’t likely look black. With the Summer sun, he’s bleaching almost as fast as his coat is coming in.
Look at this progression of this black foal. Scroll down right off the bat. Look how un-black his head looked at 2 months, and you can see how bleached his remaining foal coat was.

Based on the early pictures of that mousey color, I vote black.

We have 2 weeks, so hopefully at least most of the fuzz will be gone.
Are dark bays born looking like regular dark bays or different?
Dark bays are really browns Well, there are some that are darkER bays, but usually what someone calls a “dark bay” is actually brown.
and yes, when they are destined to be dark like that, they are different.
Here’s my “dark bay” aka seal brown, at a day old

The at 2 months

Here’s where it gets interesting - noticeable change with his shed at 3 months

and

and then 4 months.

So you can see how his new coat was starting to bleach almost as fast as it was coming in
Then most of his new Winter coat already in, though not long yet, and this is the color he’s settled on when he’s not a bit bleached

Would love it if he could just shed out all the way for his inspection next month whatever the color! Haha[/QUOTE] If you have that kind of time you could clip him… it’s been done, some then sponge then with henna. I had an orange fuzzy filly who then finally shed out a beautiful black bay, after inspection and naming, darn we stood there and she was that dark haired beauty " Ava" and we had had no clue what to name her, and so totally missed that moment.
INspectors don’t care about the stage of shedding A good bath, a good grooming, and the heat will lay it down and look just fine
I’m thinking he’s black.
And… I’d clip him. I have done this a number of times with foals that don’t quite finish shedding time for inspections/shows. They look sleek and very polished. And very little grooming/fussing is needed on the day.
Foal coats can sometimes be misleading as I too have had a “silver” foal born that was a very dark brown. The most accurate way to determine black vs brown is in the muzzle. A true black will always have a black muzzle…
I’ve had several black foals. I’d say black.
I’m wondering the same about my foal
I am wondering the same exact thing about my foal. Hoping he’s black but he’s so sunburned it’s impossible to tell. For the first couple of weeks he just looked black as night. Now he looks like a brown or bay.

Any grey around the muzzle? May be grey… Not a foal color expert… but the few “black” foals I’ve seen ended up grey. Usually you can see some greying within the first few weeks around the muzzle.

Nope, no grey. Neither parent is grey/carries grey. He’s got all appaloosa characteristics except spots though.
