Can we please stop referring to undocumented immigrants as “illegals?” It’s crass and trashy.
I don’t understand the border argument. Wouldn’t it be American border guards watching the people and things passing from Canada to the US?
Perhaps your country needs to take a really hard look at why so many Americans are looking to use drugs to dull the pain of their lives. Besides, isn’t capitalism based on supple and demand. It’s the American drug dealer who is buying the Chinese source or making it themselves and Americans who are buying it. As pointed out, your border agents are responsible for checking cargo that comes into your country. Your own border agents say Canada is not the problem with the fentanyl importation. Seems Trump has decided that fentanyl is now not the reason for his tariffs against us. I’ll let you research that new proclamation he made this evening. It’s even more disgusting and disrespectful to a sovereign nation. We will never be the 51 state.
It’s very unfortunate that horses will be hit by the tariff. Will “fake/adjusted” Bills of Sale become the norm to work around it? I don’t actually know how many horses are exported to the US from Canada though. I wonder if retaliatory tariffs will be put on American livestock/horses coming here.
(as an aside, border fences between Canada and the US go against the treaty ending the war of 1812, with a recently erected fence between Canada and Point Roberts, USA being taken down for that reason).
Are you aware that individuals with the same name on the terrorist watch list are detained and arrested until they are able to prove they are not the individual listed on the terrorist watch list? Happened to one of my DH’s coworkers who is Iranian Canadian. He was not charged but arrested. Can you provide the number of arrested individuals who actually were charged with being a terrorist?
This is a really good point. This number is just suspects arrested entering at the US border, and they are judged suspects on whatever criteria the US is working on at that time. According to the article that includes people “suspected of aiding terrorists” which could mean a banned NGO or humanitarian organization. And it could be someone with a soundalike name.
But obviously the job of keeping people out of the USA belongs to American border guards.
The US imports either the entire drug or the major components of Cialis, Viagra, Lipitor, Lantus and Botox from Ireland. I’m guessing it’s low on the list for tariffs.
Getting back to the OPs question about tariffs on horses coming from Canada to the US or vis versa, will horses now be subject to a tariff? Speaking as a dual US/Canadian citizen I am concerned about this.
Will this result in extremely lengthy boarder crossings while documentation is checked including papers to establish value?
How will it be documented that a horse is coming over temporarily for training or showing vs. permanent import/export? Getting horses down to thermal or up to T-bird or Spruce Meadows suddenly seems much harder.
Do we think this is going to apply to frozen semen for our breeders?
I am calling shipping companies and brokers and so far they too do not know or understand what the situation is regarding horses but I suspect COTH will have an answer before anywhere else regarding horses.
There is a great podcast addressing these questions (pre-tariffs so I think the focus is more on ICE) about the Pres powers in an emergency, and the legality of some of his decisions.
On The Media podcast “Is That Legal” for other podcast app listeners.
Since the other tariff topic was closed, I did make a private Reddit board if anyone is interested. For current event conversations, given the rapidly evolving nature of this … situation.
PM me if interested. COTHers only of course.
Tariffs would definitely affect all markets, including the horse market.
And you know this how? Do you have insider knowledge of the real reasons behind these actions?
I am wondering too if it will apply to the shipment of fresh semen.
Of course, cross border traffic goes both ways.
The main source of illegal firearms coming in to Canada is the US.
Trump ‘says’ he is enacting these tariffs because of fentanyl and suspected terrorists, but really? Does anyone here know his actual motivations, other than a display of power, bullying, to play to his audience?
Why would anyone as a world leader take such a foolish economic action towards the country’s most important trading partners.
And I use the word ‘partners’ on purpose. There is a longstanding trade agreement, mutually beneficial, in place between the three countries, signed by Trump during his previous reign.
One of the most important industries impacted by Trump’s actions is going to be the auto industry.
Who knows how this is going to play out.
Fair point on guns.
Bottomline… he wants a deal. A better deal. And he wants distance between Canada and China when it comes to trading. That’s not a secret at all.
It will be interesting to see what happens this week.
Venezuela reached a deal with the US rather quickly over the weekend… they returned several hostages and agreed to accept repatriation flights of their citizens.
But the bigger news was Panama yesterday. Panama’s president announced they will not be renewing their 2017 agreement with China regarding participation in the Belt & Road initiative. In fact… they raised the possibility of exiting current agreements early. Of course… this issue is still developing… but thaa a ra a significant shift.
Hopefully there are productive discussions between the US and Canada this week, and new agreements reached.
In the meantime… currency markets are already moving. The US dollar is strengthening relative to CAD. If the tariffs and retaliatory measures go on for any length of time… that’s going to be the biggest issue.
To keep it horse related, if it means more people will be inspired to reach for Contango semen it’s all good. I love Contangos. From looking at Iron Spring’s website there’s a few straws left.
More tangentially if the Messenger-in-Chief didn’t have oddly dilated pupils so often and his Junior was not manically high on camera his anti-drug crusade would not cause me to recoil from the hypocrisy. Next they will be running Captagon factories like Assad to keep the redhats crazy and fighting fit.
Also we have Chaqui Z to kick around. A motherline to die for.
I think your bigger concern there is lack of workforce to do inspections etc at the border. They will be laying people off and there will be a hiring freeze. I think you’ll have to be prepared for long, long waits at the border.
How about we avoid the usual political drama with the usual people and keep this focused on horse and horse supply tarrifs?
Can someone educate me? I was (mistakenly) under the impression that horses were already taxed upon import from Canada. I remember a story told by a Canadian friend, about selling a horse that originated from Canada in Florida, and being told by border agents (?) in Canada that she owed export tax after they inspected documents. Are those “in the know” knowledgable enough to know not to tell border agents the horses are for sale/sold? Or was there a misunderstanding in the story?
It’s like people predicted this, allllll of this.
