This really stuck with me. People who know something (for example, âcrank and spankâ) is bad but, if it gets âa good result for nowâ, still use it or are happy to benefit from others (their trainer, their leader) using it, illustrates precisely why we are where we are with horse sports - and society in general.
Honour and sacrifice and honesty and empathy and valuing things outside your own narrow interests is âoutâ. Whatâs âinâ? The ends justify the means! If it gets my horse in the right frame for the test - crank and spank. If it gets a good short-term result for now, Iâm in!! If it gets the result I want for myself, my family, my kid, my stock portfolio, my tax rate, my rights, my party, my, my, myâŠthe methods are a-okay and whomsoever may be hurt, be damned.
Crank and spank; threaten using monetary or military power and then withdraw the threat when you get what you want (and how hilarious that, in this case, he only got what was already on offer
); do something outrageous to distract from the other stuff youâre doing that you donât want people to notice - none of that is honourable. None of it is honest or intelligent. None of it is good or right. And none of it maps onto any values Iâve ever been taught, including, in fact especially, Christian values.
