Will Trump place tariffs on imported horses?

I can’t speak for Mexico, but Canada did not “cave”.
In fact, most Canadians are probably laughing at Trump right now.
Trump seems to have had no idea just how much tariffs against Canada, and the reciprocal tariffs by Canada against US products will actually cost Americans.
I just saw Gov Beshear interviewed and he repeated how incredibly stupid Trump’s actions were and just how much the CND tariffs and BOYCOTS of US products will cost.
He emphasized how important the production of bourbon is to KY, and that Canada is KY bourbon’s biggest customer. And that trump’s tariffs will decimate the KY bourbon industry, including the farmers who grow the corn.
Well, Canadians are speaking out, and boycotting US products, and buying only CDN products or at least anything BUT US.
Immediately after trump announced the tariffs, US products were pulled from many CDN liquor stores. And Canadians are applauding. .
Don’t mistake nice, or kind, with weak…

Here is a speech from Prime Minister Trudeau in response to Trump’s actions.
I suggest people actually listen to it, to see leadership and diplomacy (and actual sentences) at work.
The next day, the phone call between them.
So, once again, tell us who “caved”?

@anon6923113, anyone who has lived in the South for even a modest amount of time knows that the phase “bless your heart” is left to the interpretation of the person it is expressed to.

Everyone here knows what @WildLittleWren is like! She is kind, upstanding and generally an all around great poster.

If you interpret that phrase as a negative, Virginia Horse Mom, you might want to ask yourself why you interpret it that way. That is on you, not WildLittleWren!

Canada is going what they plans, and the target that too power and oil was masterful.

Also the lumber tarrifs were a great right, put atarrif on Canadian lumber, so it goes from $10 to $16. So builders now but from Finland at $13. Better deal that.

But the Finns just ordered the lumber from Canada at $10, and made $3 without even having to touch the lumber, because it was shipped direct to the US from Canada.
Brilliant!

Actually the increased border security plans were announced in December 2024. Government of Canada announces its plan to strengthen border security and our immigration system - Canada.ca

The problem is, much damage is done. The threat of tariffs has really brought out Canadian patriotism. I am not sure if the: “anti-made in USA” trend will go as far as horses, but it very much may.

And by the way… only 0.2% of fentanyl seizures at the border comes from Canada. Not sure that our “fentanyl czar” will have a lot to do…

Thank you President Biden.

I was just reading this looong Reuters report from October on how fentanyl is actually shipped into the US.

This really stuck with me. People who know something (for example, ‘crank and spank’) is bad but, if it gets ‘a good result for now’, still use it or are happy to benefit from others (their trainer, their leader) using it, illustrates precisely why we are where we are with horse sports - and society in general.

Honour and sacrifice and honesty and empathy and valuing things outside your own narrow interests is ‘out’. What’s ‘in’? The ends justify the means! If it gets my horse in the right frame for the test - crank and spank. If it gets a good short-term result for now, I’m in!! If it gets the result I want for myself, my family, my kid, my stock portfolio, my tax rate, my rights, my party, my, my, my…the methods are a-okay and whomsoever may be hurt, be damned.

Crank and spank; threaten using monetary or military power and then withdraw the threat when you get what you want (and how hilarious that, in this case, he only got what was already on offer ); do something outrageous to distract from the other stuff you’re doing that you don’t want people to notice - none of that is honourable. None of it is honest or intelligent. None of it is good or right. And none of it maps onto any values I’ve ever been taught, including, in fact especially, Christian values.

Well that is the irony isn’t it?.. Jesus did not go around bullying people to get his way, or seek disciples from the wealthy class to enrich themselves and dismantle the temple.

It was the Romans who imposed heavy taxes on Judea, and collected tolls on travel: monies to go back into the coffers of Rome…can we say tariff?

Politicians can call this a Christian nation…but the reality is, we aren’t very Christian at all.

We are losing our way, our ethics, values, morality, and humanity…and not only do we collectively suffer, so do the animals, plants, birds, trees, air and waters.

Politicians can call this a Christian nation…but the reality is, we aren’t very Christian at all.

Your first post on this thread was 100% politics and had nothing to do with Eventing or the original question. You’re not creeping politics into a thread, you’re smashing it in there.

"There is substantial fentanyl coming from Canada. It’s just that people keep on pointing to statistics related to fentanyl seized at the border. That’s a fraction of a total amount that is flowing over the border.

If you look at the volume of trucking coming from Canada, and look at some other aspects of the logistics involved… it’s clear there is significant vulnerability for the US when it comes to cross border traffic and drugs.

And yes… Mexico is a serious issue as well. Probably way more drugs coming into ver that border.

But whatever. Apparently there are multiple calls scheduled this week between all three North American leaders. Hopefully the tariffs won’t last long. And hopefully there will be announcements regarding cooperation to interrupt the flow of fentanyl. The stuff is awful and it’s a massive human tragedy."

Whose Customs agents are responsible for fentanyl entering the US? Here’s a hint: not Canada’s.

Does nobody else recognize that “Fentanyl Czar” is a joke of a title and Canada is laughing at the US?

Provinces have already pulled US liquor from the shelves (for those unaware, alcohol distribution and sales is controlled in most provinces by the provincial government, so they can do that). There is a wave of “buy Canadian products” going on. Ontario’s premier cancelled a big contract with Starlink.

And yes, the tariffs are a distraction from what’s actually happening, which is a coup of your government. It is scary watching from the outside where we have access to news sources that aren’t US propaganda.

Both Canada and Mexico have agreed to provide forces to stop illegal immigration and fentanyl. This could have been done years ago.

Yup, exactly. AND, dangerously misinformed propaganda, completely unsupported by facts — straight RW propaganda designed to gin up anti-Canadian sentiment. It’s total BS (um, trucks get inspected too, you know) designed to promote the idea that yeah, why don’t we just get rid of that pesky border and make it all USA. I mean, it’s there for the taking, right?

Canadians are PISSED, and rightfully so. The optics of Canadian firefighters helping in LA right before an administration starts musing about annexing us and trying to hurt us economically is worse than a slap in the face. The administration threatened the sovereignty of an ally. It’s not a joke. I could write far more that would be “too political”, but those who know something about natural resources in Canada are taking these “jokes” seriously.

I was just saying this yesterday. Get it done before Trump gets mad at some Australian woman who he assumes is English or Irish and puts a 90% tariff on imports.

There is a discredited training technique called flooding which creates learned helplessness. It overwhelms the victims mental defenses and will to resist.
Sound familiar?
