I did and I still think he needs to be more assertive if he does not want people to leave the property without paying. Again considering the fact that he is having on going issues with payments it might be worth it to him to be less polite and spell out what needs to be done. As in a sign and a social media post staying you are required to pay before you leave the property and what the consequences will be if you don’t. Doing that might come off better than going off on his Facebook about it after the fact.
This is 100% true. It’s a version of the doctrine of legitimate expectation which, though I didn’t want to wade into legal constructs, is why noting that CC paid this way for over a year without incident and that others paid and pay this way is not, in fact, BS at all.
He doesn’t even need to do anything particularly formal to change that expected usage. Just say, look, folks have been paying electronically after they ride and it just doesn’t work. I don’t know when it will come in so I don’t know if a rider forgot or is trying to pull a fast one and I don’t want to chase things up of an evening. Going forward, regardless of how you used to pay in the past, you now have these options:
- pay via venmo before you arrive
- pay via the QR code at arrival, before unloading
- pay via cheque in the honour box at arrival, before unloading
No deviation from this policy is allowed going forward. Failure to follow this policy will result in an initial warning and one-month ban. A second infraction will result in a permanent ban.
Thank you.
Yeah, that makes it worse, actually.
Like these?

I mean, the guy doesn’t have a whole lot going on, so I don’t see why he can’t just be there to make sure people aren’t leaving without paying. (Yes, sarcasm)
Right. But no one knows if Boyd has previously addressed this directly with her, then she just kept paying as before. And this was just his final line in the sand.
As I said above, it was wrong to call her out by name, but I also don’t think she’s innocent in the drama no matter what gets posted on social media.
OMG, there are signs!
You are saying he needs to have it posted on his website, he does. That he needs to have it on social media, he does. That he needs a sign, he does. He has spelled out in several areas that payment is due before leaving/entering, and the consequence of non payment.
I am just baffled here.
Yes, for his own benefit. Require the waiver and payment before anyone enters an area where the fee should be paid.
It occupies way too much space in someone’s brain to count the horses they see and remember it later at night, look up their contact information, and start fighting with them to get paid. He could add a line to the waiver, selecting which payment method was used. He should not be putting himself through this.
If someone is using the course as frequently as she is, and regularly teaching clients there, maybe a monthly or seasonal fee would be more appropriate. Or maybe he’s just sick of her.
OMG, have you not read all the previous posts saying there’s a huge, unmissable sign at the gate saying exactly that??? Can someone please post a photo of the sign?
ETA: A big, clear photo of the sign because I’m sure that video isn’t enough for some people.
ETA: Here’s the sign:
BuT tHaT dOeSn’T aPpLy To meeeeeeeeeeeeeer!
Not the frownie face!!
The fact of the matter is that sign is not working. If he still has enough people leaving without paying he either needs to change what the policy/ sign says or he needs to accept the fact that people are going to leave and pay later. Sometimes you have to be blunt and SPELL IT OUT FOR people. Tell people they are REQUIRED to pay before they leave the property and if you don’t you will be banned for at least a month. Remind people that they can pay online before they even get there. But to keep doing the same thing over and over and getting upset that you get the same out come is pointless and coming unglued on social media can do a lot of damage. Does it suck that people cannot be adults and follow the current instructions? Yes it does. In an ideal world everyone would respect the time, money and energy that goes into keeping a course like that open. But we don’t live in an ideal world and sometimes it is easier to change what we are doing then it is expect other to change.
I can see why people don’t take his signs seriously. That sign looks like a teenager designed it .
I dunno.
Large enough type to read easily, no spelling errors, and conveys the message pretty clearly, IMHO.
Flabbergasted.
And it would be fine if it didn’t have the big frowning face on it.
The fact that bad behavior is so normalized for professionals in our sport is a huge part of the problem and how we wind up with these types of incidents in the first place. Why are we willing to accept “not as nasty as some of the others” as our standard?
A teenager would have used the poop emoji.
Can you tell your grocery store that you’ll venmo them later?
How about the nail or hair salon?
How about a banquet hall?
Where else in the whole world would it be ok to say “I know you said, in several different ways, that you want to be paid like X, but I’m just gunna pay you like Y.” That is so arrogant.
“the sign looked unprofessional so I didn’t think I had to pay”
is this really a defense strategy? Signs like that cost a fair bit of $. It’s not like it was scrawled on piece of cardboard with a sharpie and duct taped to a lawn chair.
Yeah to your knowledge. Your knowledge must also not know the real reason Erik Duvander had to be fired. Ask boyd.
