Winter Wonderland

I love the snow man!

A couple of barn friends and I all had off today, so I just got home from an actual trail ride in the snow. With a saddle this time and I can now say I have cantered through the snow

And I love this photo one of my friends took. Of course M has his tongue sticking out

I always drove my ponies in the winter. My Hackney was all for it. My Welsh cross was obviously thinking “Lady, are you nuts? Take the Hackney if he wants to go so much.”

I wish I had pictures, but never talked my family into getting any winter ones. They were inside drinking hot chocolate next to the wood stove.

He’s catching snowflakes!!

An acquaintance of mine does it without a rider. Her horse is trained to harness and has a type of thing she wears around her waist that attaches to the horse so she just has to handle the reins.

She is brave!

Her horses are so well trained an attuned to her and she only goes around her yard. I’m sure she has a quick release in case things do go south. But yes, she is brave.

If I was actually good on the skis, I’d give it a try. But alas I am not,so dragging around others it is!

I feel so cold shamed. I have had no desire to ride in the snowy cold weather this past week. Bring on spring!

:joy: do not feel cold shamed. I drove past the barn tonight in my way home from work. It’s dark, cold and wet snow. Dry and warm sounded much better.

For real - I was actually at the barn last Thursday because I help my instructor with one group of students. And since I’m already at the barn, I almost always go for a ride, or at least go snuggle with my guy. That day, though, I went straight home and waved at him as I drove out (he was at the fence waiting to be fed, so he didn’t even care, lol).

Some days I can handle the cold (the sun being out helps a lot), some days I can’t.

Normally I hate the thought of cold, and loathe the thought of spending winter with horses in the snow (even though its gorgeous!). I’m usually freezing enough in our CA valley winters where the low rarely drops below high 20s and the daytime highs are low 50s. And complaining about the mud!

This winter we’re getting a lot of rain, but it’s relatively warm…so in mid-January, I’m battling mosquitoes!!! I’m covered in bites, the horses are covered in bites, it’s muddy as all get out, and everything is just the worst. I’m actually wishing we would get some good hard freezes because I’ll take being cold AF over being itchy.

I am living vicariously through y’all and seriously pondering if I need to adopt the snow lifestyle, because I’m sure as heck not cut out for the bog witch one
