I have almost convinced myself to get a pair of the FF dress boots…is the panel at the back of the calf stretchy?
I’ve never owned talls before, so I honestly don’t know what to expect!
Any comments?

long breeches for 35
Hi all - I am new and reading through 2000+ posts was a bit daunting, so my apologies if this is a repeat question…
Can anyone recommend breeches that are long enough for a 36" inseam?
I have had luck with the few Irideon style that offers longs (they actually go to my ankle, yay!), but it seems like other brands’ “long” hits me mid calf.
Would love to get some winter weights so I can stop wearing long underwear underneath!
Any help is appreciated!

Equissentials (will do custom sizes for no extra charge) and Tropical Rider. TR’s longs are pretty darn long, but they’re also god about doing custom tweaks if you need them.
Sure glad I found this thread. It does need to “keep going”… also thanks to ChocoMare for the tips…
DeeThbd: Yes, the panels at the back along the sides of the zipper on the FF dress boots are stretchy. I found them to be quite accomodating without looking like just one big piece of elastic. I’ve only ridden in them a couple of times, but so far they’ve been quite comfortable. Footbed is generous too.
o.k… based on everyone’s raving recommendations… I went to the Curvy Cowgirls site & ended up buying a pair of the Fuller Fillies field boots,… oh, and I couldn’t pass up the half chaps/gloves with bling pkg! LOL I hope and pray the boots will fit… I haven’t been able to find tall boots that fit in years! So, we shall see…

Mountain Horse Rimfrost rider!! Fit my wide calves, wide, big feet with winter breeches and THICK insulated socks on.
Calves are supposed to fit up to 17.3 but I don’t think I even stretched the elastic putting mine on, so it wouldn’t surprise me if they would fit wider. My calves usually measure 17.5 with breeches on, so… YAY!
Wished FF would make a winter line of breeches with fleece inside and also that they would make a deerskin seat breech. I’m sure I have other wishes but that will do at the moment.

Actually, Sue, FF is asking on their FB page for new product suggestions! I’d love to see those products too-I suggested a curvy-sized line of something like Cuddl Duds!
Merry Christmas!

Hey girls! I haven’t posted in a while and I’m not so sure if someone has told you guys of this, so sorry if it’s a repeat. But there is a blog for the womanly sized rider, as well as a forum where there are lots of knowledgeable, nice, friendly plus sized ladies who ride! So check it out if you haven’t before

How cool! Good for her…thanks for sharing.
I have a terrible time fitting my large calves. What adds to this difficulty is the fact that I am also short (5’2"). I’ve posted before about buying the Fuller Fillies field tall boot and how grateful I am that they make this boot! It’s the first tall boot that I’ve been able to fit into, nothing else comes in XL + short.
Anyway, I am writing today about the Ariat Terrain half-chap. I was very disappointed to find that the Arete website no longer appears to be active. I have been wearing their half-chaps for a couple of years now (they fit nicely!) and was extremely upset when I went to try and buy a replacement pair and found that I could not do so. I panicked not knowing what I was going to do. I ordered one type of chap from Smartpak (don’t remember the brand offhand) and they didn’t even come close to fitting. I then took a chance and ordered the Ariat Terrain half-chap (size XL). They arrived today and I am happy to say that they actually fit my hard-to-fit legs! I am so beyond thrilled, I never thought an Ariat product would ever fit my calves (even their socks won’t go all the way up. Seriously).
They were a little snug getting them on, but I wore them around the house for the afternoon and that seemed to loosen them up a bit. They are a bit too long (I had the same problem with the Aretes), but they seem to scrunch down enough and because they’re suede, they’re a little more forgiving and flexible, so I don’t think that is really going to be a serious problem. I haven’t ridden in them yet, but I really think that they’re going to work. I am very happy about this.
I just thought I’d mention it, in case there are any other short people out there searching for half-chaps to fit muscular calves.
Scored a nice dressage jacket at Dover over the holiday at half price ($60): Devonnaire Nouvelle Dressage Jacket. It’s exactly what I had been looking for: very lightweight, with some stretch and no seam at the waist (the waist seam is a horrible look for short-waisted me). The sizing is generous. The 20 fit me fine with no bunching (ideally I think I would want a 22), although when I look at the size chart, I should take a 24. The Fuller Fillies and RJ Classics just don’t work well with my particular body shape.
Just goes to show that you have to try things on!

I hear ya on the short and wide calf issue! I’ve got a bit more height than you (I’m 5’3) and I fit the XL Ariat half chaps too. If you are looking for field boots again at any point, I found the Mountain Horse Richmond High Rider through this thread, and I bought them in the Wide width (size 9 foot, I have weird proportions) and regular height and they have been amazing! Got compliments on them at my last show. They were very easy to break in. Two rides and they felt like I’d had them for years. My calves measure at 18" wide for reference. They were a bit high to begin with but have relaxed just enough.
Anyways, just thought I’d throw that out as another option if you’re interested! They’re reasonably priced too! $400 up here in Canada. I think cheaper in the States.

I tried a Mountain Horse boot (can’t remember which model though) but they didn’t fit. I think my biggest problem wasn’t so much that the width was technically wrong, but that the width allowance for the calf just started too high on the leg. So, in other words, because my legs are short, my legs start to get wide lower than the boots do. They were designed with a taller person in mind, so although the height may have relaxed some and I wouldn’t have had a problem with where they hit at the top, my calves start where, on a taller person, the boot is designed to still encounter ankle. If that makes sense. I’ll keep this model in mind though, if I ever decide to try another pair again, I really liked the Mountain Horse otherwise and was very disappointed that they weren’t going to work. I’m happy to at least have the FF now anyway. And am thrilled with the Ariat half-chaps.

Yah maybe it was the particular model. I know that when I was looking at their site, the ‘wide’ varied in actual diameter between models. The Richmond ‘wide’ was wider by several inches than the ‘wide’ in most of their winter boots for example. So I had to be careful and check the measurement chart for each model individually. And I also know what you mean about the wide part starting in the wrong place. Don’t you just love being on the short end of the height spectrum?
Anyways, feels good to finally find something that works eh! Whether it be fuller fillies, mountain horse, hispar or whichever, I love that there is at least more than one option for those of us womanly sized riders. And that’s why I love this thread Because now I know more about all of them!
Two thumbs up for Fuller Fillies Boots!
Two thumbs up for “Fuller Fillies” tall standard wide riding boots! I Finally got to try them on this week, and rode THREE times in them already! WHOA! I can FEEL the girth when I am riding! But, they are also slick like I just showsheened my horse’s sides, so now my lower leg feels looser. Overall, I am really impressed with this tall boot - it is the first tall boot I’ve been able to wear in about 10 years!!! I definitely plan on riding ALOT in these boots!
Thanks to everyone who posts great info on this thread & board - I’ve been able to learn SO much & find better tools & products for my horses & I!

How do I decide if it’s worth taking boots to have gussets put in?
I scored a pair of leather boots on ebay for cheap enough to take a risk, and they’re pull-ons and I have no boot pulls. Without boot pulls, I can ALMOST get them on - it feels like they SHOULD fit, if only I could get that extra inch in the top.
Unfortunately, since I can’t get my leg all the way in, I can’t tell for sure how they fit in the calf and foot. Holding them up to my leg and foot from the outside seems promising, though (the width is actually in the right place for my calf, astoundingly enough, and they’re not several miles too tall) and the leather is in pretty nice condition - little bit of scuffing and wear marks on the soles, but it’s almost like someone spent more time walking around in them than riding.
Should I just take them to a cobbler and see if I can have v-shaped gussets added in the top so I can get them on? Is there some trick to getting them on without doing anything else to them just to make sure it’s worth having the work done? (I’m willing to do a bit of work and wiggling to get into them as long as I can get them OFF again. )
I’ve never had tall boots before (thanks to the Calves of Doom - back when I was riding regularly there was no such thing as a wide calf off the shelf boot) so I’m not sure how much struggle is normal.
(So far, the only thing I’ve tried is putting on knee high pantyhose for more ‘slip’ and also I attempted to use yarn as boot pull loops - that part didn’t work so well, there’s just not enough to hold on to and really pull comfortably.)
I can’t answer your question about the gussets, but can you buy a pair of boot pulls? Seems like the place to start anyway.
