I think they mean that really light beige. Ick. Boring.
around here Rust would be considered sand colored. It’s red clay country here!! if anyone is interested int he rust ones, I found them. She has a few left, and they come in 36, 38, & 40 here’s a link for the 38’s.
My dream would be to have Shapely/Figurefit cut, in a nice quality fabric (like if they could do 'em in Tailored Sportsman 4-way I’d swoon), in kneepatch and full seat, real leather and not that hinkey stuff, in an assortment of darker colors.
Sand is a greyish-beige. I actually like it for showing, as I have a pinto, and white breeks get too many shades of white going.
Coreene, I’m so with you. Remember the old Harry Halls? I had a pair for like 20 years. THAT material. With hips. And room in the thigh so it’s not a sausage.
I just ordered 2 pairs of boinks on clearance. I have been LIVING in my winter ones I got on clearance at State Line back in the fall. They are 2 layers, inside is fleecey, outside is cotton/lycra. YUMMY warm, and surprizingly supportive. I don’t know how the regular ones are going to be. I hope they are somewhat supportive and not see-through? They have a generous return policy… so… <hopinghoping>
I am pretty down though. I have been working out regularly and sensibly. Feeling somewhat more fit, but my calves have gotten BIGGER. HOW IS THAT FAIR??? :sigh:
I can’t fit my show boots or mtn horse boots on over winter breeks. I’ve got an email in to Arete re: the tall-boot-chaps. :sigh:
I am going to be broke by the time clinic rolls around. The only redeeming feature is I’ve gotten everything on sale, some of it ridiculously cheap, and it’s stuff I needed anyway. Still… very frustrated about the calves thing. Now, if my belly was getting smaller, I could understand… :dead:
I lost 20 lbs since January 1, so I am dancing! But I never, ever, ever lose it in the calves. And there is much poundage to go, so until then I’ll keep dancing in the black / brown / olive-brown barfers.
Gawd I loved Harry Halls! I think I still have a loffly pair of gray ones in the cupboard, from the days I could wodge myself into a 32.
About breeches, and I don’t remember if I or anybody else said it before on this thread, but at the risk of repeating I’ll say: Equissentials are SO worth the extra money. Because:
A) They fit
B) They are deerskin for Full-seats
and
C) They fit.
Also, there’s a selection of colors, and they will reuse the deerskin on another pair of breeches if/when you wear them out, AND they will resize them for you if you lose/gain weight. So, you pay more than the bottom of the line off-the-shelf breeches, but they last 10 times longer, they are wonderfully comfy. And did I mention that THEY FIT. Custom, in this instance, is Not more expensive than off the shelf.
There, I said it!
It’s been said, but it’s always worth repeating. Equissentials rock! (as do Tropical Rider, but they aren’t custom.)
But Equissentials–100% custom at no extra charge, they resize, “recycle” and have phenomenal customer service. I love 'em!
Where do I sign up?
 Riiiiight. Womanly and HLaS?? :uhoh:
x – I have the Devon Aire stretch dressage jacket, and it is very generously sized (and goes up to size 22). It really does have some give to it. It’s nice for a lower-priced coat:
(If that doesn’t work, go to statelinetack.com and look for the Devon Aire Nouvelle Stretch Dressage Coat in the show apparel section.
MEP – The Outback vest that Pintopiaffe got is a great one. I know that because I have the same vest, in three or four colors. I also bought the Oilskin one. It doesn’t fit quite the same (doesn’t have the nice shape to it) but I like it any way. The Outback Trading Co stuff is great. I also have their down jacket and it too has the nice elastic at the back waist to make it fit better.
I’ve been following this thread but been silent, till now!
I am a womanly size rider… well I’m fat, haha. But I think I ride pretty darn well and I want to event, my horse and I do well together despite her being awesome and me being a chunky butt.
I have ordered custom boots from: http://www.elresero.com/sitio/main.asp?secc=36&id=144
I haven’t gotten them yet, but will give the full report. I figure if they are close I can bring them somewhere here and have them altered. My problem along with freakishly large calves, is that my instep is really high and I can’t even get past the heel part of most boots, this had a measurement that solved that so I hope they fit.
The breeches I’ve been riding in are from Horse, Rider, Etc, I’m not sure which ones they are but think they’re the ones with just a drawing of them, they are super soft and comfy, fit great, and even are a little baggy where it counts. I wore them (along with my Arete Half chaps!) on a hunter pace this year and it was great.
My one complaint about the Aretes… is my horse was sort of a spaz-like creature, along with a furry creature, on an indian summer day of the hunter pace, she sweated through the saddle pad (custom, white with her name embroidered on it) and onto the half chaps, which then BLED black/bluish dye all over the pad and ruined it. I almost took my navy blue pad that day too… but how many horses sweat through half chaps? I guess spazzy, furry ones carrying a chunky butt rider. Not spazzy in a bad way, just couldn’t throw her head because of a running martingale, so she sort of kept hopping in front, not a rear or anything, just like a “boing” weird horse.
I also found this hunt coat and plan on ordering one, the size chart doesn’t go up very high? But the sizes come big, I can’t find a size chart in anything bigger, but I’ll guestimate on size and the tack shops have a return policy for the most part. My first recognized show isn’t until September, so I’ll probably be ordering this early summer (incase it doesn’t fit and I need a plan B!!) and will let you know about the fit. http://www.horseandsport.com/OvationSportCoat.htm
As far as paddock boots for high insteps/wide feet, I’ve fallen in love with the Ariat Terrains, and while they’re not super fancy, they’re comfy, warm, water proof, have held up, and look good for both western and english (I have a pony representing each direction).
Kudos

Way to go Coreene!!! I am down 17 since Dec.! Jenny Craig is helping lighten my weight, and my wallet, but it’s been (& going to be) worth it. My new horse will appreciate it! He’s been here since Dec also, and He’s only known the fluffy me. If he likes me now, he will love me by this time next year. (I have a long row to hoe as the farmers say around here.)
About the Harry Hall’s… they were so cute, I had a gray pair with that V seam on the rump to accentuate the positive… looked great… but boy were they slick!! and yes, they lasted forever!! Until I outgrew them.
OH–THANK YOU for the jacket links ladies. It looks like the Ovation jacket is what the old-old 1824 jacket might’ve been. (judging by the colours) I had one, ADORED it, got great reviews when wearing it… and (gladly) shrunk way out of it. I did pass it on to another womanly rider … I’ve been hankering for another hunter jacket. At that price I won’t feel guilty that I wear it to work/interviews/court/funerals more than on the horse. I have been eyeballing the Equissentials forEVER. What I really like about them–and am worried about–is the waistband. I have a pair of cotton leggings, I think yoga pants, that are my FAVES to ride in. This lovely wide waistband which feels flattering and supportive. BUT IS IT?? (flattering, that is?) For lessons, I have to tuck in my shirt :uhoh: And I’m afraid of that waistband… Is the equissentials material THICK enough too?
Then again, I suppose I’m probably going to end up with enough vests that I can take a year of lessons and never wear the same one twice…
The OBTco Oilskin vest from Cabelas is actually cut a little MORE close and fitted than the Grand Prix vest I got. It does have the elastic gather and snaps in the back too, the design is changed from years past. It’s a hair snug in the hips for me. BUT, is a lovely colour and Oilskin lasts forever. Lining is good wool flannel, so I suspect it might loosen/give a bit and be a better fit. I’m going to wear it to work and sit around in it for 10 hours to test that theory.
I do LOFF the quilted vest with collar from Cabelas, even if it’s a bit big. I wish it had back gathers, then it would be perfect. I have a waist… it’s the hips that are such an issue. :dead:
Chipn’grace, I FEEL for you. I’ve had the opposite problem. Hot sweaty day, half-chaps bled onto pinto HORSE. He had orangey rubs forever that no amount of quicksilver would work on.
Devon Aire Breeches
Hi guys! I’ve been a lurker on this thread for a while. Today, in the mail, I got a pair of 38L Devon Aire breeches in tan. LOVE THEM. The fit well (as well as breeches can fit for me… regulars ride my belly button, and low rise’s show people the crack) They are belly button dwellers… but, fit true to size. I am tummy chubby, with average butt and larger end of average thighs. The material is comfy, and tick- not bulky thick, but no dimples or orange peel thick and feels durable. I’m excited to ride in them, got them from a great girl on ebay… I have a pair of tuffriders and state line tack brand breeches coming next week, so I’ll let ya’ll know what I think.
We Womanly riders
Same problem! Have you checked out the “1824” collection availabe through Equestrian Collections? They have a decent assortment of plus size riding breeches and jackets…not sure about boots, although I think they have them in larger calf sizes. I have ordered breeches from them and was pleased with the fit.
Was just browsing through the big Dover 2006-2007 catalog (the one with the cute little boy in show clothes on the front) and found Dublin sidezip breeches (the nicer fabric) on sale from $120 to $19.90 and they are available up to size 38L, in nice show-appropriate beige or khaki. Wanted to get the word out, as well as ask if anyone has tried these and if so is the quality comparable to TS/Ariat?
OHH!! Tack of the day, www.tackoftheday.com has larger size full seat breeches on sale this weekend… they are apparently the same maker that Sigma used to be. 45$ plus 6$ shipping for the full seats (fake leather of course). Make sure you click on the ‘tack of the day’ logo to get to the ‘bonus item’ page…
They have 34, 36, 38 and 40’s left.
Okay…question: The size chart confuses me a little (not hard to do! LOL) - so did you order by that, or did you do the custom measurements?
I’m very anxious to hear how that works out for you - I have freakishly large calves too… along with l-o-n-g knee-to-ankle… nothing even remotely semi-custom works for me without significant alteration - not an easy thing to get right!!
I would be thrilled to pieces to know if I could get reasonably decent custom boots without having to refinance my house. (LOL)
I just ordered a dressage coat from Equestrian Collections - but not sure WHEN it will arrive. I have a feeling it will be later, rather than sooner.
Unfortunately, that’s frequently been my experience with them, and I try to avoid ordering from them. They were so much better when they were just 1824. Now I see fewer and fewer plus-sized items on their web site.
Some one needs to start Plus-Sized rider.com and sell apparel and boots and have a discussion group so people can review products and provide tips.

Yes, they are nice. I bought the 38L they were way too long for me. If someone really needs long, they will be right. The inseams on the 38l was 29 inches!! Color and fabric was very nice. I definitely was pleased with the quality. They are more shapely than TS, and very flattering. I liked the thick fabric, and they were not slick. The fabric is mostly nylon based, but it’s not shiny, and they stretch somewhat. Go get them, they are worth it!
