Womanly-sized riders, unite!

Anybody have the Dublin Etsuary talls? I’m wanting something waterproof to wear to work on rainy days. I have a very small, wide foot. Calf isn’t skinny but not XW,either.
I can’t seem to fit into anything but Birkenstocks anymore.[/QUOTE]

Do your feet fit in Muck Boots? The calves on Muck Boots are pretty forgiving–at least 4 people in my barn wear them, and our calves range from 14.5" to 17"–and they’re fabulous for rainy and snowy days.

If you’ve been dreaming of full chaps but always thought you couldn’t cram yourself into them without going custom…there’s a British tack shop that’s clearing out their ProChaps Athletic Full Chaps at roughly $181 US shipped. That’s a steal compared to the retail price of $275. I just got mine today, and I’m delighted! They have stock left in the bigger sizes (C, D, and E). ProChaps stretch out a LOT–I learned this from my half chaps, which are marked for a 15" calf and fit my 16.5"-17" calf beautifully–so I ordered Size C in these chaps, and they zipped up very nicely!

A bit off topic, I just wanted to show y’all the mounting block that hubby and I built. I’m 40lbs overweight after cancer and also have a bad back. Couple that with a 17.1hh mare that decided that 16hh was too short so she kept growing.

My 5’2" legs cannot reach the stirrup without crippling my back, so hubby and I measured and built a 33" mounting block w/platform. It cost us $78 total. So nice compared to the 4 step mounting block that cost $209 PLUS $156 freight shipping.

Used it for the first time today and it is perfect.

Very nice, shadytrake. I would love to have one like that.

Yessss! New plus-size field boots option!

I am very happy with my Fuller Fillies field boots, but I am delighted to see another boot option available. Thank you, Tredstep!

I tried a pair of the new plus size Tredsteps and sadly, they were cut all wrong for me. Too tight in some places, too big in others. :frowning:

But I don’t show enough that I can’t get by with paddock boots and half chaps, so I don’t really need tall boots.

That’s a bummer! Do you remember where they were too big and where they were too small? Ankle, calf, etc?

The new Ariat V sport boots (similar to the Volants - but at a $300 price point) will come (I say will, because its still back ordered) in an XL calf that is 16 3/4" for a 8.5 foot.

Reviews I have hunted down say that the calves run big, and if in between sizes to order a size down.

My calves are 16 1/4 so I think I am going to get the wide calf which is 15 3/4.

I’m short with short legs. I have duck feet and big calves, but I don’t think my legs are oddly shaped otherwise. I’ve almost got nice ankles. The boots didn’t work because:

They were too narrow in the foot, which was an issue for me because I have wide feet.

The widest part of the boot calf didn’t match the widest part of my calf. I might have attributed that to my short legs, but I ordered the short height and if anything, they were a smidge too short, so they are obviously intended for short legged riders.

They were huge around the top. I could zip them up over jeans and still stick my fist down the top.

The fit in the ankle and lower leg was good and the boots were beee-you-tee-ful. I was so disappointed when I put them on and realized that not only didn’t that pair fit, but that no other size was going to fit well, either.

That’s very helpful- thank you!

I gave the Tredstep Donatello plus wide dress boots a try, and they were a bit big for my 17-3/4" calf; however, I feel the may fit a larger calf lovely. I ended up going with the Ariat Challenge Contour Square Toe Field Zip in Cognac color, xwide, and they fit like custom. They literally mold to your leg. Worth giving them a go when zipped up.
Also, I wear SmartPak Piper Plus full seat breeches because they have a variety of colors, fit high enough in the waist and are comfortable. They are for budget-minded riders.

I am going to give these boots a try TUFFRIDER LADIES’ PLUS RIDER FIELD BOOT
Link: https://www.horseloverz.com/product/tall-boots/1142099-tuffrider-ladies-plus-rider-field-boot.html

They don’t just have a wide calf but a short of tall height. They are listed as a new product. If you can find a lower price online Horseloverz will match it.

They may not be top of the line but I would be so happy to have boots that fit. I am breaking in some that are digging into the back of my knee. I had to even condition the inside of the boot to soften them.

I found a size chart for the Ariats and it says its a 17" calf but you are saying that it fits your 17.75" calf like custom?

How contoured are the ankles on the Ariats? My issue now is that I damaged my ankle in Jan and have scar tissue and my left ankle is now big and I had to return the Mountain Horse High Rider field boots b/c I could not get it over my left ankle. :frowning:

Also how would you describe the quality of the Tredstep boots? I really like that they have a tall and wide sizing option as usually I run into an issue of the boots being too short.

I bought a pair of “Fits” breeches for winter. Heavenly soft lining, full seat and wind proof. I recommend them wholeheartedly. And I was able to buy a size smaller than normal…I know, I know…I’m just as fat but for once I had to put the bigger size back and buy the smaller size. $149. Worth it for my ego, if nothing else. Asking Santa for a second pair.

In case this is useful to someone else: SmartPak is selling most Fuller Fillies stuff for 50% off right now, with the exception of the Ali Gaiter half-chaps which are 75% off.

I am horribly afraid this means they’re discontinuing it all, which makes me sad, but at the very moment I don’t mind the good deal. (Had been meaning to try the Ali Gaiters sometime anyway!)

PSA: SmartPak has the FF dressage boots on post-Xmas sale for $58, the show coat for around the same, their Bradley denim breeches on sale, and some of their own show shirts.

I keep hearing that the Ariat wide, and xtra wides run large. Most reviews I am reading (because I am boot shopping!) keep saying to size down - especially if you are between sizes.

I have 16" calves and I am headed to the Dover store in Denver to try on boots next week - I will report back!

Annnnd - the Ariat 8.5 Wide calf fits my 16"+ calves PERFECTLY. Like custom. A little tight the first time on, within two rides they zip right up easily and fit like a glove.

Advice needed for a new, older, plus-sized rider considering showing.

OK, so I’m new here, I’m 50 and I’m definitely plus sized. I ride weekly and am about to (possibly) do my first show. Just on the flat and poles. Should I? I look kind of ridiculous at this weight (240 - my highest ever.) And I’m 50. And it costs a fortune. Am I wasting my money? Should I wait until I can do cross rails? I’m seriously concerned that no matter how well I ride, there is such bias against overweight riders.

Just go and make it a fun experience and screw everything else. I think I was around that weight range my first show. Who cares? Just have fun.
