Okay, I only am posting because every time I read the title of this darn thread I see…
Womanly-sized riders, untie!
And…you know, being rather womanly sized myself…I see no reason that I need to UNTIE anything. In fact, I rather like to keep it all tied up.
In all seriousness, thanks for the help and advice. We need to consolidate this info somehow into a spreadsheet or list or something!
lol I don’t know if you were quoting on purpose, but someone said the exact same thing about 15 pages ago, and now I do the same thing every time I read it!
First, I love this thread !! After many years (30) I’m taking the plunge to show again (hunter) I’ve started getting my show clothes together. Unfortunately I’m an apple womanly-sized rider. Breeches(Tuffrider), boots(Mtn Horse) are covered, but the hunt coat search is horrible. I wear a street size 20. I have tried on the devon-aire nouvelle size 24 and was about 2"-3" short in the bust. Normally its my shoulders that are the problem. My local tack store is ordering in a 28 ovation wool hunt coat, but I’m worried about if it will even fit after a previous poster had problems. Has any one tried the coats on ebay by curvycowgirl? or RJ classics? Has anyone else had problems with 1824 hunt coats? Also I ride a chestnut, is Navy the color of choice? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Okay… I am a 22 in normal street clothes - and tall so finding riding clothes that fit, and work… is a challenge. Since I strap the 40DD’s down pretty tight when I ride (to avoid facial fractures and unsightly bruising there ), it does affect the bustline in my coat quite a bit. It’s the hips where I generally have a problem - I’m a pear. Great for riding, not so hot for clothes-buying.
I finally found a jacket that is actually roomy enough for me to have tailored to fit in the arms and bust, and still fit in the waist, hips.
Since I ride dressage, I went with the Ovation Ladies Wool Dressage Frock Coat - and went for the 30Regular (dang those hips). My only gripe is that the coat is a bit short, but that’s because I’m an amazon and unless I go custom, it’s unlikely that any stock coat is really going to be long enough. They do have a Wool Competition Coat that would do well for the Hunters - they go up to 28, so that’s helpful, I’m sure.
You could very likely go with something smaller, but remember buy BIG and let the tailor be your friend. This particular website/company was SO super friendly and helpful in getting the right size for me - I’m ever grateful!
immigenie – the RJ Classics are REALLY nice coats… they come in a wide range of sizes if all you need is Navy. For the trendier plaids and stuff, the sizes are limited. Check out their website and it tells it all: www.rjclassics.com
Now I wish they made bigger sizes in BREECHES!! They look like a fabulous product.
Head’s up, the tack of the day item today is Kerrits Eventing Polo shirts. The main page doesn’t show they offer the 1x & 2x, but if you click to buy, the page where you order offers the plus sizes! Yay! This shirt and the Kerrits ventilater are the only warm-weather schooling shirts I can find in plus sizes!
Hey Lindsay…you’re my hero!! I totally would have missed this one, and am SO grateful to have caught it - you’re right, finding summer shirts that breathe AND fit, is a challenge!!
Someone mentioned this ages ago, but I have to chime in with my own recommendation…
The Ariat Hanover paddock boots are like MAGIC. Stretchy, adjustable lacing up the front gives me room through my chubby arches while the rear zipper makes them easy on/off. I tried on nearly a dozen boots the other day before hitting upon these, and I barely flinched before spending twice what I’d intended so I could bring them home.
If you’re having a hard time fitting a chubby foot, try these!
I have some of those Ariat knock-offs from TOTD, which I love…but, the toe box cuts into my little toe when I step and it hurts! I wonder if they’ll ever break in enough to stop doing that?
Well sad to say the Ovation coat size 28 came and went. Sorta fit the bust but not the shoulders. Ugh!!! I wanted to scream. The Devon-Aire size 24 actually fit better even though it was too small. Ordered the 1824 hunt coat in the largest size, hoping its big and will take it in. Cross your fingers. Has anyone had experience with the Wellington show shirts that are in the 1824 section of Equestrian Collections? Only 3 weeks till the show…
Ok, somewhere in the 26 pages of this thread, someone talked about getting Petries from Europe for like $300. I tried the search function to no avail…can someone help me out? Links? Are they fully custom at that price?

Thanks for all the suggestions and support[/QUOTE]
The 1824 dressage coat, if that’s the one you ordered, runs waaaaay bigger than the Ovation. I got the Ovation in whatever was the biggest size Equestrian Collections had, and if fit at the waist but that was it. The 1824 coat in the largest size looked like a trash bag on me–swimming everywhere! The next size down is still too big, but I may keep it and have it altered.

I haven’t had this particular problem, but my boots are about a half-size large on me. I went that way to accommodate any extra footchub. So my toes don’t quite sit all the way into the toe box, and aren’t really pinched by any leather folds.
Rode in them for the second time tonight and am pretty pleased with how quickly they’re breaking in. Yesterday was a chore, and the first half hour tonight was a little rough, but it was pretty comfy by the end.
I too am a Womanly-sized rider and have a few deals I have come across in the past couple months.
My first deal was on a pair of dress boots. I found a pair of “Elite” dress boots on clearance at Sandridge Saddlery in Quebec (www.sandridge.ca). They were on sale for $ 100.00 (in an XW calf as well). Than I got the name of a local leather repair person and took them to him for modification because the XW calf was still too small. It took $ 60.00 to have him add a gusset and zippers and now I have a lovely pair of “custom” dress boots for less the 1/4 of what was quoted to me for boots.
The 2nd deal was on a hunt coat as I have been contemplating going to a few fun shows and although we did not make it to one last week I had hoped to, have it for the future. I had called Ravenwood Tack (http://www.ravenwoodtack.com/) to see if she had any larger sized hunt coats and got lucky. She had a Devonairre (sp?) in size 24 that was on for 1/2 price. So I jumped at the opportunity. Tried it on last Thursday and discovered it is a bit too big (a bonus??) but with the help of a tailor, it will do just fine.
So you never know what you might find out there if you call on tack stores.
