Womanly-sized riders, unite!

Whew. It’s nice to see this thread. I thought I was the only one with fit issues! I’m 5’9"-5’10", and I normally wear a size 18. I learned very, very quickly that the saddleseat clothes one can buy from World Champion Horse Equipment or the National Bridle Shop are made wayyyy too small. The plus sizes only go up to a 24, which wouldn’t be a problem if the clothes were true to size. Like I said, in normal clothes, I’m a size 18. I can’t even button a size 24 jacket! (Wide shoulders, big chest, and not-so-small tummy.) It’s embarrassing, especially when I know that I’m not REALLY a size 26! I can’t wear the jods, either, though, so I guess it’s ok. Rolls eyes

All my clothes have to be made for me. I hate it. I can manage to fit into a size 24 shirt and a size 24 vest (which was way too short, but it really didn’t matter that much since I put a coat on top of it). I think if you’re going to sell a size 24 that’s really a size 16, you should just call it a damn size 16 and not get everyone’s hopes up!

Edited to add–Western clothes tend to be more true to size, but you hardly ever find anything other than ugly, plain button-up shirts in plus sizes. I have a lovely black leather vest in a size 3x, though. It’s plenty big enough, but it doesn’t even reach the bottom of my ribcage! You’d think that someone who designs these things would realize that if they’re going to make something in a 3x, it should probably be longer than the same article of clothing in size XS. But what do I know, right? It’s my own fault for having big boobies!

/End Randi’s rant for the day about riding clothes

I got my boots. Sent them back and asked for a refund. Just sent an email asking where my $$ was, since he called on the 9th and said it would be sent on the 11th.

I’m sorry the boots didn’t work :frowning: I’m assuming it was a quality thing…

The quality of the leather and the workmanship was excellent. The foot part was perfect. But unless I had been 6’7’, the boots would never have fit.

I have to say that every other pair of his boots that I have seen were wonderful, but sadly my pair did not work out. And his feedback for the boots on eBay is also excellent.

Am ordering custom topped Petries on Monday.

Sorry to hear that Coreene, but good luck with the Petries! That what I’m thinking of ordering, too.

Breeches: Rider’s Mark! I got some for $12.50 from Equiteric on ebay (aka horseloverz.com). Got them last night and the fit and are very comfortable! They don’t seem cheesy, the seams seem solid, so I think they’l last a while!

Wondering about the boots

Correen… did he just not make them to size or is there an issue if you have short legs? I really, really need a pair and these seem reasonable priced.

I’ve been wearing schooling tights (Devonaire), which stretch almost as well as panty-hose do, but I’ve been thinking about buying one or two pair of breeches, wanting something warmer than my tights now that cold weather’s here. I have one pair of Devonaire Polartec tights which are great but not as stretchy as my regular light-weight ones.
My problem is, I haven’t bought breeches or jodhpurs in ages, since the days before lycra and spandex, back when breeches and some jodhs had flared tops for roominess.
What I need to know is, does any company make breeches that are as stretchy as tights? I don’t mind ordering Irideon 2 sizes larger than my normal size IF they fit, but my tights are XL and, because of their stretchiness, they fit fairly well.
I’m just afraid of spending $90 or so to order a pair of breeches that won’t fit!
Any suggestions?

If you tell us what size you wear in “regular” clothes, we might be able to help. Or, buy the Irideons from someplace where you can return them and exchange for the right size.

The Rider’s Marks stretch. The Tuffriders I had were pretty forgiving, too. I can’t wear Devonair’s XL breeches, but I can their tights.

Thanks.

Size 20 in jeans (or 22 if the brand runs “small”); I think those equal 1X and
2X respectively (?)

If you are going to try the Irideons, I’d order the 3x. I wear a 1x, and need the 3x in the Irideons. You could also try the size 40 On Course breeches in the Dover catalog, and the size 3x Boinks. Boink makes a nice winter breech (more like a tight, but very warm – warmer than my Irideons).

They bore no relation to what I had been measured for. That said, every other pair of his that I have seen were excellent. I just ordered some Hispar field boots on eBay - $199 plus $20 shipping - so that I’ll have some while waiting for the Petries, which I am ordering in January.

Thanks for the feedback about sizes. My second pair of Devonaires just got a seam split (luckily on the leg!) and I’m a bit leery of ordering another pair of that brand since the last pair I bought got seam splits right away and I had to restitch them on the sewing machine. They’re not so tight that they’re splitting from too much strain on the seams, as far as I know.
The Irideons and Boinks cost almost twice as much, and I know that a higher price doesn’t always mean better quality.
Have any of you had experience with fairly new tights splitting seams?

I got mine and am very happy. Nice leather, breaking in with no problems. The lower leg fits perfect, the calf just a bit too large but I think that’s a measuring problem on my part. My calves swell over an inch during the day and I purposely made the measurements larger. I really like the solid zipper, especially since a friend of mine keeps having to bring her boots (unknown brand) in to have the flimsy zipper repaired. Wonder if your boots got mixed up with another?

When I buy devonaire tights, I just take into account that I’ll have to resew the seams…they just fall apart! You look at them funny and they split.

a tip on tights

I’ve just bought a lovely pair of Miller’s Polartec tights, size XL, with knee patches, for just at $50. They are a little longer than my Devonaire Polartec tights, and even tho’ I’m short these give me more length, which gives me more “give” around the knees.
I also tried on a pair of Kerrits XL winter tights, not Polartec or other fleece but a sort of “padded” feeling version of their lighter weight tights. These fit better than the other Kerrits I’ve tried, and were a bit roomier in the leg than the Miller’s, but the waistband was too tight, even tho’ it’s elastic.
I recommend the Miller’s ones. I’m very pleased with them.

Thanks for posting the comment about the Devonaires, twnkltoz. You’ve made me feel better; I’ll just start stitching mine up on the machine before wearing them! Either that, or stop making faces at them.

Coreene - let me know how you like the hispar’s… I have a pair. Still on the fence about them

“Fluffy” rider here!
It’s not just you. I had the exact same problem - buying 3X was a verrry very hard thing to do…but they’re SO nice in every other way, that I got over it quickly.

this makes me feel better… I am in this club. It’s nice that some companies are starting to see us… and yes, I found RUST breeches on Ebay in my size! Can I say, OVERJOYED!!! they are lakeshire, and look nice. I paid $40 and they are not slick… but my saddle’s seat is buffalo- maybe that’s why.

Anyone got boots for sale? I keep watching the COTH classifieds, but I might miss them. PT me let me know that they are listed, and I’ll look for them. I could use another pair.

Hey ladies, Adams Horse Supply has the Irideon breeches (a great selection) up to size 3X, and their prices are good. I just placed an order, and shipping was free, and I got a discount of $50 off an order of $250 or more (OK, I bought a little too much). But what a great deal.

'Scuse me while I beat my head against the wall. The Hispar boots arrived. Good quality for price; I bought them on eBay from the Hispar people and with shipping they were $219. Too bad they sent the medium calf size. Le sigh, now they have to go back bla bla bla, and I was so hoping to ride in them this weekend.
