On a different topic - Maybe you ladies can give me some ideas… are there particular brands of jumping saddles that made you feel more secure with your womanly figure? Clearly a larger seat size is in order, but is there something you liked or disliked about a brand? I noticed some describe a “wider seat” with a narrow twist, did they prove better for you?

Thornhill saddles. Nice wide tree for my giant horse (even though I swear Oliver doesn’t look at big as Willem, even though he takes a blanket two sizes bigger and is taller than him), nice big seat for my big ass.
That said, they are also nice when you have really long thighs and need the larger seat/flap to accomodate that.
Equiteric has a dressage coat with a piped collar. Anyone ever seen one? Are they nice?
And I totally agree with the cream breeches. But - putting on my Aunt Esther hat for a minute - must say that when wearing cream breeches, wear a cream stock tie! :yes: And do not clash with your pad.
Saddle Recommendation

I would have to recommend the saddle I have, an older Nelson Pessoa. There is nothing about it that is specifically wider or anything, but I feel very secure in it. I have a very pear shaped body, and my butt would make J-Lo run and cry in shame, but I have found that if the saddle fits your leg, as long as you bum doesn’t hang off the back, you should feel secure. I ride in a 17" saddle, because I have short, stumpy legs, but I am not hanging off any where, and the saddle fits me and my horse. I have found that a narrow twist is what I prefer, and if you get into a wider seat, you may end up with a wide twist, which can be quite uncomfortable. Also, don’t be tempted into buying an 18" saddle just because you have some junk in the trunk, saddles are measured more by the length of you hip to you knee than your bum. When I was first looking at buying a saddle, I thought I wanted an 18" or so seat, but ended up really liking saddles that are 17" or 17 1/2". Trying them is the key. Good luck in the saddle search. I got lucky and found the saddle I wanted online, used, dirt cheap in less than a week of shopping. I love my old used Pessoa, and I take care of it so it will last me many years!

I am long from my bootie to knee so I really want a bigger seat size, plus I feel a bit more comfortable in it. I have a County Stabilizer but it doesn’t fit the horse I am riding… I don’t really have $3500 for a new one, but want “something” to ride this wider horse in. I don’t own the critter so it’s hard for me to justify dropping thousands on a saddle for him… but I also understand it must fit us BOTH.
Any thoughts on the M. Toulouse saddles? They seem reasonably priced and come in various styles. When I did a search on the H/J side the posts seemed favorable. Not sure how wide it is though.
I’m gonna second the recommendation for the Thornhill saddles - the price is right, the seat sizes come larger (and flaps longer) to accomodate pears with long legs (that’s me!), and they come in varied widths for even the widest of horses.

For the wide horse, I love both my Duett Saddles (www.duettsaddles.com) and I’d buy another one in a heart beat - They are beautifully made, uber comfy and truly fit the wide horse. Best of all, they fit wide me too! And don’t cost mega bucks either.
I have a Thornhill JC Berlin and it fits me well, but is actually too wide for my mare. I use a front riser and it does ok. What I’m not thrilled about is the quality of the leather…very hard.

I LOVE my old Nelson A/O. IMPOSSIBLE to find again I’m sure. Mine’s a 18.5" seat with a wide tree for my mare. Found it on eBay from a male jumper rider who was 6’4" and riding a draft cross. 
Fits my morgan mare and I to a T. I loff it. I have been known to cruise eBay occassionally for a “back up” but have yet to see my saddle again in the same size and tree.
Those old Nelson A/Os are just the best. I would not trade it for a thing. I have a friend who has a newer Rodrigo Pessoa always tries to by mine off of me, and I am not selling. I have heard good things about the M. Toulouse saddles as well…I would go to a nearby tack shop and see if they can help you find a saddle that will fit you, and a variety of other horses. Perhaps a saddle with an adjustable gullet system so you can just change the gullet if you ride a more narrow horse. The Bates saddles seem nice, and I have heard good things about the Wintecs as well, and the Wintecs are easy to maintain. Just a thought.

For a CC, I love my Crosby Centennial. It’s another one of those “hard to find used” but mine I have had since it was new. Seat’s wide, tree fits wide horses… mine has a short regular position flap, but they had all different flap configurations, like long forward, short forward, regular forward, short regular, x-long forward… (my husband had one… XL F in an 18.5!)
If you can get past the orange color never darkening, it’s a great saddle! From what I know, they do change color, but very slowly.
New 16R Ariat Legacy Hunt Coat
Hey everyone! First, I just wanted to give everyone a heads up that there is an 16R Ariat Legacy Hunt Coat being advertised as brand new, for 75.00 on ebay.
Secondly, I recently am getting back into riding, and am in the process of finding a barn and getting all my equipment together. I have to say that this thread has been worth it’s weight in gold. I haven’t actually needed to order anything online yet, but I’m sure I will soon. I’m a college student and I’m funding riding out of my own pocket, so money is always an issue. Luckily, my old Ariats (paddock boots) still fit, as well as my gheto velcro black suede chaps, so all I really needed to get was breeches and a helmet.
I’m still working on the helmet. I got distracted from my helmet shopping when I went into a local tack shop that has a good used section, and what did I find?
Size 9.5 lightly worn, semi-custom Effingham boots in the softest leather imaginable. And what is my shoe size? 9.5. They fit my gigantic calves perfectly, although there is a little bit more room at the very top (by the Spanish cut) then there probably should be, but I think they’ll be ok. They have a little bit of room in places on the calf; I could actually slide them on without boot pulls, but still stay on well and are tight on the majority of the calf. The person before me didn’t even wear them hard enough for them to seriously drop! (They did wrinkle a little bit, so I’m hoping for a 1/2 inch drop). I’ve heard how hard it is to walk in new tall boots (that you have to do a bit of a straight leg march) and I didn’t encounter any of that with these. They do hit me a little too high on the back of the knee, so I’ll have to get those heel raisers so I don’t crease the backs of the leather, but when they drop I think they will be dream boots. All for under $200.
Sorry for going on and on about these, but I’m ecstatic, and naturally a verbose person. I’m just so incredibly happy! I’m so happy we have a great thread like this where we can compare plus-size clothes and suppliers.

Vests for $6
I’m not a huge fan of walmart, but they’re having some amazing clearance/sales right now. They have a fleece zip up vest for $6.00, and a pretty quilted vest for $8.99.They’re out of stock online, but if you check the stores hopefully you can find one.
I’m seriously coveting both of them, especially the quilted one. Believe it or not, I have no vests, and now I’m getting back into riding I’m definitely going to need some! If only I hadn’t bought field boots yesterday. Hopefully someone here can take advantage of the sale.
Heads up! There is a 19" Passier a/p on Ebay right now (and no, I am not the seller). I would snap that baby up myself if it weren’t (a) over $1K and (b) nearly identical to the 18" one I ride in every day and am quite comfy in.

I searched the thread but did not see any posts on plus size attire for fox hunting. Does anyone know of a site that sells plus size womens hunting attire, especially tweeds for cub hunting? Or do I resign myself to buying mens hunt coats?

I don’t know if they have tweeds, but I know Middleburg Tack Exchange has plus size meltons in decent quality for $199 new. :yes:
